View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been using OpenSuse 11.4 LXDE version for about 6-8 months. All worked fine. I noticed a few days ago that my file manager would not start from the tool-bar menu. I went to the kick of menu to find "File Manager" under system tools and it would not start from there either. I created a new folder on the desktop and tried opening it - it would not open. I can only assume its some sort of a bug and most likely occurred because of the recent computer update (I get regular notifications to update my system so I do it).

If this is what I want, please help me find the resources for doing this. I dont even know where to begin!I am running Ubuntu 10.10.I am not looking for remote computing. I cannot guarantee that the remote computer I am on will have Ubuntu on it. I want the files to show up like they would over normal SMB/SAMBA networking. I just want to be on any computer in the world, enter in an IP address, enter a password, connect, and be able to access my files.

When I click Places>Network it FINDS the other computers, but when I double click one of the other machines the "wait" pointer comes up and then it says: blah blah blah... I have got 2 machines. One install with ubuntu 9.10 and another with 10.04LTS.I wanted to have file sharing between the 2 system that is on the same network connected through Lan.Have tried installing Samba on the system with 9.10 but I got no ways of trying to access the share file from the 10.04 LTS system.
View 10 Replies View RelatedLubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.
I use before Ubuntu and win xp in different 2 desktops, they have no samba related problem. But this time I cannot access from ubuntu to windows 7 or reverse way both. Installed Samba, configure it, searching web lot and nothing is working. My windows 7 is Home Premium edition. Btw, the error shows "Failed to mount windows share" about ubuntu to w7 and from w7 to ubuntu the error is "find no network path"...both machine is pinging each other.

How can I share files between two laptops, both running Ubuntu 9.04, home wifi network situation?
There seem to be lots of Samba type programs etc, but I just want to know the simplest most straight forward way.
What needs to be in installed on each machine etc..
I just installed 9.10 and I tried to share specific folders by right clicking and selecting share. Not a problem.
However when I goto a Windows machine I see the share but cannot connect, says incorrect login/ password. I used the same login/ pass for the linux box and I created a new user and I still get the same results. What am I doing wrong?
I want to use the GUI for this please. When I edit the smb.conf I don't see the share.
I have two desktop computers on the same home network and I am unable to share files between the two. Both have access to the network. One is able to file and printer share using SAMBA and a windows 7 laptop. The other machine is unable to either do file sharing via Samba or SSL file sharing between the two Ubuntu machines.

sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server nfs-common portmap

How can you turn off unwanted file uploads in Amule? In Limewire you can decide if you want to share files or not. How can you do this in Amule. I've turned down the settings to 0 or1 and reduced the bandwidth time etc. But to actually prevent? Also in windows there's all kinds of file splitters and joiners what is recommended in Ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a small home/office network, which currently consists of a very old mac running osx10.4, a windoze 7 laptop and an ubuntu 10.04/windoze vista laptop, along with a homebrew setup on a wii which understands smb. I'm in the process of setting up an additional ubuntu PC which will, among other things act as a file and web server, mainly for web development and for sharing files, music and videos.
Up until now I've just run everything on SMB, and I will have to set samba up on the new server, but I would prefer to use a different protocol for the ubuntu and mac systems, as SMB doesn't recognise/create file permissions properly and it takes a while sometimes to notice new files in folders it's recently looked in.
I have encountered many problems in Ubuntu, many of which I have been able to figure out how to fix myself (except a few tricky ones). Found a new one recently that I just cannot figure out. I have set up file sharing on my network between two systems running Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), one a desktop and the other a laptop. I Installed the proper packages on both systems, and it seemed to be working properly. However, on the laptop, when I try to mount or access the public-files of the desktop or laptop I receive the following error:
Code:
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)
[code]....
