I have a simple question, what is the best way to clean up or edit my boot screen menu on Ubuntu...? I'm running 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux. I have run about 5 upgrades and the older Kernels still show up.

the grub splash screen is too dark with very light colored text. i wanted to edit the screen background but there is no menu.lst. what file is shown by grub ?
by the way it works very well and has really scanned the complete computer for bootable partitions. and all work without any modification.
I have finally ditched Ubuntu/Mint after 2 years and have now installed Fedora 12. I am excited to give it a spin. This was the first version of Fedora that finally recognized my intel graphics card.
I have 2 questions:
1. How do I edit the fedora/Gnome main menu? When I left click on Applications, etc. I am not given that option.
2. How do I change the login screen?
I would like to be able to edit which OS is set as default on the first selection menu. I installed Ubuntu via windows xp. and have Grub 2 installed. When I start my computer, first I see is the BIOS, then I have a menu which allows me to select either windows xp or Ubuntu (windows xp is the default which I'd like to change to Ubuntu). Once I select Ubuntu, then I get the menu allowing me to select between the different upgrade versions.
From all the pages I read through on editing grub2 defaults, they only refer to the second menu that I get to pick between the upgrade versions or kernels (I think they are referred to). What I'd like to do is set Ubuntu as the defualt on the first menu screen, as Ubuntu is my preferred OS and it can load automatically, then I don't care what the default upgrade version is loaded (this i have understood how to edit).
This is kind of a odd request but I figured I would ask before just poking around and messing something up!
I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I have 80 gigs of my HD dedicated to ubuntu the rest of my 500 gig HD to Windows . Heres my issue when the initial boot screen comes up asking me what OS I want to use. Theres like 4 versions of Ubuntu and then the Windows selection. I was wondering if theres a easy way to go in and clean it up so only the most recent Kernel update is showing, it's recovery mode option, and then Windows?
I have installed two OS on my PC. Windows 7 and fedora 12,but when I boot it shows 3 entries for fedora and one for windows to select. How can I remove redundant menu entries without affecting boot loader.

Apparently I'm not supposed to edit /boot/grub/grub.cnf, but /etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d. I looked at these and read The Readme as well as a tutorial at [URL]. I'm still not sure of what to do. When I boot up I get 4 choices: 2 for Squeeze and two for another linux distro. I would like to edit the print out I get when I boot up, as well as add the partition for XP which wasn't included.

I've created live squeeze usb-hdd with syslinux as boot manager:LB_BOOTLOADER="syslinux". Now if I boot from this usb-hdd image I get in the boot menu:

I dual boot Ubuntu with Windows, so every time I turn on my computer, I have to choose a system.
I rarely use Windows, but I still need it on here for some applications. Being that I'm going to be using Ubuntu 90% of the time, I was wondering if there was a way to boot directly to Ubuntu without erasing Windows.
Is this possible? I'd want to be able to press a key at start up or something so I can still use Windows if I want to.
If that's not possible, how do I edit the boot screen so instead of 14 seconds (or whatever it is), it boots Ubuntu in one or two seconds?
Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen....nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete....system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

Is there a graphic interface for editing the menu? If not, could someone please explain to me how to edit the menu through the menu file?

I when choose "Ubuntu" on the boot menu, it just says something about no wubldr, then the screen goes blank, & it goes back to the boot menu. The last time I used Ubuntu I installed some updates, and it told me to restart the computer. I restarted the computer, and Ubuntu wouldn't start.

Everything has been working just fine since I installed it (about a month ago, when 11.04 came out). The problem must have something to do with grub not finding the correct partition or something like that. I was messing around with pysdm, trying to make it auto-mount one of my partitions, so that's the likely cause of my problem. However, I did not edit anything on the ubuntu partition, only the partition where my files are located. Is there any way to tell grub which partition to load upon booting up?

I read online that that meant I had to fix my grub menu, which I did. Now a regular grub menu pops and and I have no idea what to do with it. Whats a grub menu? View 6 Replies View Relatedi've just tried to install openSUSE on to a spare hdd, i've also got windows 7 on another. After installing everything and the computer went to reboot the screen just went black and didn't restart. After restarting it myself, i turned the computer on and got to a menu that says:
openSUSE
failsafe
windows
When i tried to go to openSUSE it seemed to work and a long list of text came up but after a few seconds it went to a blank screen. The same thing happens when i go to failsafe. so i'm not really sure what to do, i would have tried a few things i've found from searching but can't get to the command prompt on failesafe.

I still see 11.2,11.2 safe mode start up menus on boot, i would like to remove these menus.
Would removing these menus affect stability
Also how do diagnose any left over trash ,non applicable software left over from 11.2
I need to auto-hide the menu bar but I can't seem to find a place to right click for the menu bar properties. Also, I would like to get rid of some indicators like bluetooth and the mail/chat one but they're locked and can't be unlocked.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble with the grub boot menu. I have a dual boot system, Windows XP 32 bit and Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. Windows was preexisting when I installed Ubuntu. The install went fine but when I restarted, the Grub menu gives the option of the Windows boot loader but when I tab to that and press enter the screen goes black and the curser just blinks in the upper left corner...no XP boot. The XP drive is there as I can mount it from Ubuntu side but when I try to boot into it it does not seem to be there. What have I done and what can be done so that I can boot into the XP side?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm currently trying to get to the root of an problem on startup; unfortunatly when booting after the first couple of messages when booting without quiet and with nosplash in the grub menu I still end up with the nice blue background and the slowly filling bubble... I'd like to go back to the old, boring, messy, but much loved and now much missed (least by me) text boot screen where I can see wtf my system is doing and where its hanging during the boot process.
(I know the cause of the hang now but still want to go back to the old fashioned noisy boot environment - not a fan of the windows style silent boot... I like to know what's going on and that my PC hasn't decided to join the French and go on strike, though wouldn't blame my poor netbook if it has, hammering the bleeper doing random number analysis - not something an atom 270 is designed for)
Is it possible to edit the "Places" menu the way one can edit the "Applications" and "System" menus on gnome?
Right-clicking on the bar gives only Applications and System as editable menus. I would like to remove some items from the places menu and add others of my own liking
I get no action upon selecting "Applications/Edit Menus" or "System/Preferences/Main Menu". I can open alacarte with sudo, but can't save any changes.
