I have finally ditched Ubuntu/Mint after 2 years and have now installed Fedora 12. I am excited to give it a spin. This was the first version of Fedora that finally recognized my intel graphics card.
I have 2 questions:
1. How do I edit the fedora/Gnome main menu? When I left click on Applications, etc. I am not given that option.
2. How do I change the login screen?
Does anybody know how to manually edit the main menu (gnome) launcher files? I would like to start a program as root but the only wasan get it to work is to set it up as a "Terminal Application" and put sudo in front of the command. Is there a way (similar to "system-config-firewall" ) can prompt for the root password an run the software as an "Application"

Some themes will include an icon for the Gnome Main Menu that you may or may not like including the default Fedora "infinity" Main Menu icon.Most launchers, whether on the desktop or on a Gnome panel, will permit you to change the individual icon. The Gnome Main Menu offers no such facility. Whereas there have been several challenging methods suggested to change that icon on a system-wide basis, there is an easy and straightforward way to do it on a user account basis.
Note: the method described herein applies only to the single Main Menu icon usually added to a Gnome panel in place of the custom Menu Bar that Fedora creates by default. This method does not work with the default custom Menu Bar. To add the Main Menu to a Gnome panel, right-click a blank area of a panel and select Add to Panel, then select "Main Menu" from the box that appears. Move the Main Menu icon to your desired location by right-clicking it and selecting Move. I finally figured out that a .desktop file needed to be made in /usr/share/applications, but I can't get the icon to show up. For the "Icon" field in the .desktop file,tried giving an absolute path to an icon in my home folder, and I also tried putting the icon in all the folders under /usr/share/icons and just putting "eclipse" (the icon file name) as the valueI had copied this last from some of the existing .desktop files that worked, but still had no luck. Does anyone know how to do this?

I've searched the forums and Google, but can't find a method for doing this. See the screenshots - both menu heights are exactly the same, but if I reduce the font size, I'd like the menu to shrink too.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI've tried to change the log-in screen on Fedora 15 (gnome3) to have a custom background, however none of the guides I've found have worked - I'm now left with a blue background with no image. They all follow the same instructions as this guide. (I did change the address and PID to my own ones, although the PID was always increasing everytime I typed it) If I type this into the terminal logged in as my user I just get my desktop background changing, although I'm assuming this is correct.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI my trying to install Ubuntu onto a new 1 TByte Sata HDD on my Dell 8400. The computer has no other OS installed as the old HDD containing Windows XP has being removed. The new hdd has being fully formatted and is set up as a NTFS with a single partition of 1 TByte. I downloaded the latest version of UBuntu and burned it to a cd as a ISO file. When I boot my computer up from this cd I am asked to enter my language of choice and then I get the main menu screen. On this screen I choose option (2) - Install Ubuntu. After a few minutes during which time you can hear the cd being accessed the screen just displays this main menu and never changes. I have tried twice using this install option but after 45-50 minutes the screen still never changes. No progress information is given. If it is normal how long does the installation generally take?

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter trying to personalize GDM's login screen, I have been able to change the background (If anyone know how to personalize GDM's login screen, Sometimes when I go on the login screen, I see a gray box without anything on it (I try ALT+CTRL+F# and ALT+CTRL+BACKSPACE) but nothing is shown. With the new changes to RHEL 6, and it being more inline with Fedora, how do you change the login screen background? I'm talking about the main login screen, not after you have logged in and need to change the desktop background. We use a custom background for machines in our lab, and need to implement this on 6.
