I have servers in remote locations where I have no control over the network routers or firewalls. I need to have a VPN connection to my servers.Is there a way to create a PPTP VPN connection automatically? I'm trying to connect to a Microsoft ISA PPTP server from my Linux box. The box I'm connecting from is itself a router. I have no problem connecting a Windows XP machine to the VPN via this machine. This is fine, but I would rather connect via the Linux machine, giving me far more advanced routing options (i.e. no to send every packet from the XP box completely unnecessarily via the PPTP tunnel). The Linux router is running Debian Lenny.
I've checked iptables. There were initially some issues. I've fixed those.
Invoking pppd from the console, I can see that authentication succeeds, but then some negotiation goes wrong and the server terminates the connection. Here's the output from pppd, with the more sensitive stuff removed:

I have a Novatel 760 broadband USB device and I use kppp to connect though it is extremely slow (ping takes 100ms). What I need is a way to make kppp connect on reboot without any interaction from the user. I have looked on the Internet, but I did not find anything useful. I am using kppp because I could not get gnome-ppp to connect and it does not seem to have the features of kppp.

Now I want to have it started automatically then my network interface is assigned a particular IP from my home DHCP server. I don't need it in other places. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been working for the last week trying to connect my serial hardware external modem (courier 56K v.everything) within an Ubuntu 10.4 environment. I live in the boonies where I am presently forced to use dial up, so this has got to work, else I cannot update Ubuntu or download software. After trying various suggestions, which my very limited Linux skills fail me, I opted for the suggestion that I download gnome-ppp, install and then use it. Seeing how I cannot download it through Synaptic Package Manager (which I was advised to but can't as it is my Linux computer that I am trying to connect).
I downloaded the zipped file (gnome-ppp_0.3.23_Oubuntu2.tar.gz ) to a USB stick, copied it to the home directory and then extracted it, wherein a new directory was created with many files in it. From here I have been unable to install it through the command line (not sure how), nor have I been able, as was suggested, to install it via the Synaptic Package Manager (can't get it to see the file, not sure how to). I need explicit (Newbie) instructions on how either to connect the modem without gnome-ppp, or instructions on how to get gnome-ppp installed.
This questions is a little complex but here goes.at a central HQ I have a windows server 2008 R2 machine running routing and remote access. At my home office i have a class C lan with a Fedora 13 machine. I can get fedora 13 to connect using pptp no problem. I have my router running tomato set to redirect all traffic to teh 10.0.0.0 network to my linux server. My questions is how to I make the fedora 13 machine pass all the traffic from my network with destination 10.0.0.0 over the vpn tunnel? so for instance if i ping anything 10.x.x.x from any machine on my network it will find it and reply?

I have ticked MPPE, configured gateway, username, MSCHAP and MSCHAPv2 are ticked, using 128-bit encryption. I am having trouble connecting back to my vpn at work while I'm at home. Mainly need to get our local svn repos for at home development. I successfully connected to the vpn following this [URL]..I am running Lucid Lynx 64bit and I followed the 9.10 section of the tutorial on setting up PPTP connection.
It worked fine. Then I walked away from my computer and it was disconnected when I came back 2 hours later. I was unable to connect back to it. I used my laptop which is running windows 7 and it connected just fine. So, now I am unable to connect to it and have no idea why. I viewed my system log and don't know what to do with the information. Could someone help me out on this.

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.
Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

I assume the failed read line is the culprit. I am currently running on a test machine. There is no firewall. I read on this error points to a firewall misconfiguration, but there isn't one.
I just installed Lucid Lynx Ubuntu on my computer. I love it, but I do not see how to configure my dial-up modem and connect. I'm hoping it's still possible. Here's my hardware.

I just installed F11 and can't make VPN connection to PPTP server using NetworkManager.

I'm trying to establish a connection to my ISP which uses PPTP protocol and a VPN server. The deivce I got from my ISP is a modem, not a router. The problem is my computer is unable to communicate with the ISP VPN server.

I have started a newly started a VPN-service with some friends and are offering both OpenVPN and PPTP-vpn.The OpenVPN works perfectly, but we have some problem with the PPTP.It is possible to connect to the VPN, but once connected you can't get any type of access to the outside world ( the interner ).I've googled (Ok, not I, but the tech-guy has) and havn't found any solution so therefor we try here.We are running Debian 5.0 on a XEN VPS.On the machines we've tested OpenVPN works like a charm.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI followed (or at least tried to follow) tutorials on doing this. I installed network-manager-pptp and tried to configure network manager to connect to a VPN. In the settings when I select MPPE with 128-bit encryption, after I've selected it and applied it, I check the settings and it's invariably unchecked. I tried using KVpnc after getting frustrated with network manager, and I can't seem to get that working either. I've been trying to search for info on this, and I can't seem to find anything on why I can't select MPPE with 128-bit encryption. That seems like it might be why I'm unable to connect to the VPN?

I was using windows xp service pack ii. It was nice and easy installing my modem on xp either via usb or ethernet. Both ways it was easy as i have both the drivers with me.Only and main problem was fighting viruses. I tried many free downloadable anti-virus software to protect my maching. Initially they were fine. But after few months they stopped taking regular updates and became non-functional. I also tried symantec corporate v.10. But it has its drawbacks also. It made my machine perform like a snail.I had previously heard about linux based operating systems. But never tried one. As i am an ameteur in using computers windows xp was suiting my needs. Recently i saw an article in the newspaper about ubuntu which is a free open source operating system. And most important to me it is virus free.But here is a problem also. I cannot connect to internet. My ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala is not identifying my modem and a network between my modem and my machine cannot be established. Also i cannot create a dial-up option where i can give username and password.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using network-manager-pptp to create a PPTP VPN connection in my Ubuntu virtual machine for a while now, but I have constant problems with random disconnects. I don't know what the cause of the problem is, but I suspect that network-manager-pptp is not the most well-written piece of software around...
Is there another way of instantiating PPTP connections in a more robust manner? The same PPTP server works reasonably OK with Windows 7 (some disconnects, fewer than in Ubuntu, and Windows has an auto-reconnect feature).
I read some guides on using the pptp command, but they all seemed pretty low-level, messing around with ppp. I never found the time to figure out how it all was supposed to fit together. Has anyone accomplished what I'm trying and is willing to share the knowledge?
EDIT: Tried kvpnc, and it seems the stability is more or less the same as network-manager-pptp. The error message is "Modem hangup".
To clarify, I understand that the connection can go down, but I want to be able to reconnect automatically when disconnected.
I am checking something out in my connection and i just wanted to ask, is there a way to auto-disconnect and connect from the internet, for example say I want to disconnect now and reconnect to the internet in 0.05 seconds, is there any program that does that?
