General :: Can't Mount (access) Widows Drives From Ubuntu 9

am facing trouble in accessing my windows file system from within ubuntu OS.. i had this problem with a fedora distro before,, and it wasn't solve till i've installed ubuntu and still facing it here,,i have some of my friends who installed ubuntu from inside the windows.. they are not having this problem.. they can navigate through the both file systems under linux and windows.. but i've installed it "from out windows vista OS".when i attempt to double click on windows drives it says something like : "cant mount the drive.".. really confused..
I'm working on creating a bootable Linux CD to distribute a sandbox environment to customers that will work on multiple PCs.One requirement of this environment is that we do not want the user to have any access to the underlying hard drives in the computer to prevent any accidental and/or malicious damage. I can prevent the disks from automounting with a few udev custom rules, but is there any way to prevent/block the user from manually mounting the hard drives after boot up.
Can i mount the partition on which windows is currently installed in (dual boot, win and ubuntu) and navigate through its folders and take files, eg. pics, songs... to place on my ubuntu desktop. Just wondering, im trying to get others used to linux enviroment and want to start transfering things wihtout making it too drastic for them. The process that i described above doesn't have to be exactly like that, but basically anything that gets me similar results.
I have booted up from openSUSE 11.3 on a USB stick. When i go into Dolphin (the file explorer) and try to open a harddrive, I get the error:

I recently had issues with the latest version of the Linux Kernels and I got that fixed but ever since that has happened none of my Drives will mount and they aren't even recognized.
I'm currently setting up a laptop for my grandparents to use. They have never used a computer before, so I'm trying to make this as fool-proof as possible. The system will be setup with Ubuntu 10.10. In order to save them the hassle of having to unmount USB drives before disconnecting them, I would like to have all USB drives auto-mounted as read-only (possible use cases for now only include them getting data from people, not them copying anything to the drive). I have so far found that gnome-volume-manager is responsible for the handy auto-mount, but I didn't find any way to set options, like always mounting drives read-only.
I created some .tar.gz archives, and later discovered that the archives include their mount points and drives as empty folders. How can I avoid that happening in the future? I suppose I did something wrong when creating the archives. I mean, what is the point of the archives having empty folders that represent the mount points and drives of the archived data?
I have Fedora 14 installed on my main internal drive. I have one Fedora 14 and one Fedora 15 installed on two separate USB drives.When I boot into any of these drives, I can't access any of the other hard drives from the other drivesll I can, but just the boot partitions.Is there any way of mounting the other partitions so I can access the information?---------- Post added at 12:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:34 AM ----------I guess even an explanation on why I can't view them would be good too.
I have installed VMWare Player on my windows XP and installed Ubuntu. On Ubuntu virtual machine I see Network Drives folder but I do not see any netwrok drives I have on my windows. Any suggestions for what should I do to be able to access Network drives in Ubuntu as well.
I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.
I am dual booting OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows 7 both 64bit on my PC. I've got VMware workstation installed on both. I've got few virtual machines which were all created in Windows VMware and they're all stored on a separate partition. I can access this partition and all other NTFS partition from Suse but with read-only permissions. That means I can't run any of these virtual machines from Suse VMware. Is there any possible way to make all these drives writeable from Suse? I'm really hoping someone would be able to help me. I've got a lot of googling and have even searched this forum but without any luck.
I recently started using Ubuntu 11.04, and everything had the ambient theme. After a couple hours of use though, the bar at the top of the screen looked like something from windows 95.
i just installed ubuntu 10.04 in my windows 7 s/m.(Dual boot) ubuntu got installed without any problem.But now when i try to boot to windows,s/m get crashed on the way..i could just see the windows logo,but by then,blue screen crash occurs..
now i want to run widows or its applications in my fedora14. i heard about vmwere&wine, but dont know which one would be better choice. or is there any other applications that is better than these...?
Using NFS on the client machine. I am running scientific linux on my machine. Its working fine for my other machines.I have made sure that the firewall is disabled and also the selinux too. here is what i get when i use rpcinfo -p on the client.

I'm running ubuntu 9.10, and created a softraid5 with no problems. Now i need it to automount with user read/write access, and i need to make some network share folders. My fstab has the following line for the raid:

Code: sudo chmod 777 /media/raid/ So now i can create folders and files on it. Then i created some shares, one with guest access and other with no guest access.
Now the questions:
1) If i access the guest shared folder via WinXP, i create files and folders, but they appear locked on ubuntu, so i cant access them until i change the permissions. If i go to proprieties/Permissions, the owner is "nobody".
2) What password do i need to use on WinXP, and i try to access the non-guest shared folded? Do i need to create a user just for that?
I'm using some software that using mount point such as truecrypt. I also mount shared folder on other machine (fileserver) and publish it using ftp. The problem is when the truecrypt volume dismounted or the shared folder mount point loosing connection to the fileserver, user can write to the mount point without knowing that they actually not writing to the truecrypt volume or to the shared folder.
My question is, when sometime the server reboot and truecrypt volume is not mounted yet, how to prevent write to the mount point? I dont run truecrypt mount automatically for security reason.Some question for shared folder, if fileserver restart and the shared folder mount point got disconnected, how to prevent write to the mount point?

I tried setting up my own partition table which apparently didn't go well.I have 1 compactflash-disk for linux and 2 hard drives for data which are set up for RAID1. But the RAID-drives doesn't get mounted.This is my first RAID-setup

I like the 20 second boot from press of power button with my new install, BUT I can't mount drives with xfce's thunar. I can mount them with thunar but this way they still do not show up under places or on my desktop. How do I figure out how to mount them properly?
The other one mounts fine. They are all separate physical drives. Another oddity is in that it lists those two drives which are SATA as PATA, but I imagine that is something to do with my BIOS settings being on compatibility settings.
