Ubuntu Networking :: Can Access The Servers When Connecting From Local Net: 192.168.1.0/24)

Dec 11, 2010

I have recently upgraded to 10.04 and I am trying to access my apache and sshd servers from the net but I have not succeed so far when those two are using their regular ports. If I change their ports to something greater than 1024 they work fine.80->8010 22->4567(I can access the servers when I am connecting from local net: 192.168.1.0/24) Is this restriction build into the new kernel? Is there something I can do to fix this without recompiling the kernel?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Access "Your Desktop Is Only Reachable Over The Local Network. Others Can Access Your Computer Using The Address 127.0.0.1 Or Tabatha.local"

Feb 19, 2010

Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.

When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

Networking :: Connecting To Local Network Data Server?

Jul 1, 2010

I'm trying to connect to a data server (basically a big hard drive) in my lab with my computer. On the Mac that's at the workbench next to me, you enter Go -> Connect to Server. From there, enter the IP address that I have (I can't find a server name--just the IP.). It asks you which subsystem you want, queries you for a user name & password, and then opens a window with all the files. Meanwhile, on my Ubuntu machine, I have a "Connect to Server" option under "Places" on my main menu. But when I choose that, I need to select what kind of server it is, from several options that don't seem right. (It's not FTP, it's not SSH, it's not a form of HTTP, and that leaves "Windows share?") I've tried several things, but usually get back 'Cannot display location "smb://<IP-ADDRESS>/" The specified location is not mounted'. I've tried many ways of mounting this drive, but it usually gives me permission denied errors (even though I *know* I have the right login and password--I've logged in using the aforementioned Mac).

Ubuntu Servers :: FTP Access Inside Local Network Only?

Jun 8, 2011

I've been researching this all day with no luck thus far. Basically I need to cutoff port 21/ftp access from IP addresses outside of my local network. My local IP range is something like 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.150 -- so anything outside of this range would automatically be blocked.

Any IP address outside of this range would be denied as I use SFTP for remote access, etc. from home, etc.

I've researched IP tables, tcp wrappers, etc. but am still unsure which would be best for what is probably a simple fix.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Setup For Hostname Access On Local Network

Apr 13, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu on four machines at work and have been blown away. On my machine I have Apache setup for web development and other machines can "see" it using my IP address. I would like to have it so they can access by the name of my computer though. I have no local DNS server so I guess I need to hard code the relationship in each machine? Ideally I'd actually like to be able to use subdomains (which I use locally to avoid annoying .htaccess path problems). i.e. from another machine on the network to go to [URL].

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Wireless Network - But No Access

Aug 7, 2011

I have a fairly new install of 10.04 on a Dell laptop (about a week). Everything was running well, connecting wirelessly to the interneet through my home router (WPA/WPA2). Today, for some reason, I lost my connection to the internet. The network manager tells me I'm connected to my router, but all the lines on the wifi indicator are gray and there is no internet access. I reinstalled the 2 sets of packets for my BCN4312 (bcmwl-kernel-source and b43-fwcutter ), but no change.

Networking :: Connecting To Various Servers Via SSH

Feb 2, 2011

connecting to various servers on my network via SSH. All IP's on my network are static IP's that I've set.

DHCP is at: 192.168.1.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Source IP that I'm trying to SSH from is 192.168.1.2 (My MacMini) I have 2 servers that I SSH into both running CentOS. One I have no problem with: 192.168.1.102 But the other I can't seem to get to: 192.168.1.103 The strange thing is I can only get to it once I ssh into my .102 server. Then ssh from there to my .103 server.

It started breaking down about a few days ago when I installed my VPN server. Could this be causing the problem?? I can access the VPN interface both internally (with a local ip) and externally (outside from the Internet). But why can't I ssh to it from my local network? I've set the subnet for the VPN to be the same as my network.

Networking :: Access Public IP From Local Subnet

Jan 22, 2011

does somebody know how dnsmasq / iptables need to be configured such that requests to my public IP from lan are correctly NAT'ed to the host that handles them? Currently my routing device treats them like "oh, these are anyway for me, gnam gnam" which actually doesn't work.Unfortunatly setting up NAT rules that redirect requests from my lan correctly as they are redirected from wan is an option I would like to use only if there is no other possibility.I would like some kind of solution that treats packets that are sent to my public IP as normal packets that are not looped back before they even get out. So they would need to be at least sent to the wan gateway where they are directed back where my firewall can successfully treat them like all other public requests.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Access Web-config Pages Of Local NAS Devices?

Jan 25, 2010

Up until yesterday I was able to access these devices through the web interfaces that they use. I'm running Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 I have 3 PCs running on my network, and 2 NAS devices: Ubuntu (main computer, also has an XP partition)) - static IP 192.168.1.30 Ubuntu netbook - DHCP IP Windows XP (HTPC) - static 192.168.1.50 Linksys NSLU2 (was running Debian, problem arose when trying different configuration, now back to stock firmware) - static IP 192.168.1.100 Dlink DSM-G600 - static IP 192.168.1.120

I used to be able to able access these just fine using my main Ubuntu setup. Now, it will no longer display the pages. Internet access is fine, i can even access my DSL/Router device's internal config page. The netbook and the Windows HTPC can both log into these devices, as well as the XP partition of the Ubuntu system. I have tried using a VM of XP within Ubuntu, bridging the network device, i have the same symptoms - internet is fine, cannot access local network web-logins.

Access to fileshares among all machines remains unchanged. another odd behavior is that i can SSH into the NSLU2 device from all the machines, but i get odd things from this computer - it will let me log in, asks for a username and pass, but if i run anything like mc or htop, it just blanks the terminal in an odd way. from other computers the login and display are fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Internet Access And Local Files/server

Jan 16, 2011

i would like to setup one of my old pcs as a file server and internet gateway; we are living in a large building shared with 40 others. the ubuntu box would be the one connected to the internet via ethernet and sharing connexion via wifi. i haven't started yet - presently, i am doing the ground work and reading before to start i understand sharing the internet is relatively simple and can be done from the GUI

What we would like is slightly like BT Fon or BT Open Zone in the UK: you can hook on a free network but in order to access outside (internet: email, web, ftp, etc) you need to login login would help us monitor fair usage. I imagine something with username and password for each user would do: as we are a few in the same building not everyone is actually paying for the connection and we don't want to end up with rather large excess bills. So the ones who are paying access both files and internet; those who dont just have access to the files on the local server.

Do i need Ubuntu server to set this up? What hardware would be ideal - given we are all far from rich but willing to have a nice setup

It would be great if you could share some knowledge around the topic and eventually provide some tutorial; also any heads-up on the hardware side would be great! (signal booster, etc - there's 3 floors and 3 buildings)

Ubuntu Networking :: Use Local IP Only On Local Network?

May 25, 2010

I've got an Ubuntu server hosting our websites and other various things here in our own home. We recently switched to a router that doesn't support loopback (abomination), so I've set up hosts files on our computers so we can access our own sites when on our home LAN.

However, we often take our laptops as we travel about, and I'm guessing due to the hosts files when we try to access our sites, it'll look on whatever local network we're connected to for our server, which won't work, obviously.

Is there a way to set up something like a hosts file that'll only try to look up the local IP of the server when we're on a specific network (our home one), or have one that tries to look for the local IP first, then proceeds to try and resolve the domain name and use the external IP if the local IP doesn't work?

Ubuntu Servers :: Networking - Machine Refuses To Give Access To The Internet Via Firefox

Sep 21, 2010

I have a machine (lets called it machine 1) with two networks card, eth0 and eth1. Both have static IPs. Once in a while the machine refuses to give access to the Internet via Firefox (eth0 is the route to router). Other machines on the network have no problems accessing the Internet. Eventually the machine would just magically start working again, but this time it just seems to have stayed broken. I've done some simple diagnostics and found:

a) I have another machine running Apache with a Wiki on our network - [URL]. Machine 1 is unable to connect to this Wiki. I get 'the connection has timed out'. I can ping 192.168.1.73 and it responds in the usual fashion.

b) If I try to ping www.google.com it times out with: ping: unknown host www.google.com. I can ping google using its IP address.

c) On machine 1 I have tried traceroute on both www.google.com and its IP and I just get:

1 * * *
2 * * *

And so on until hop 30. Doing this on any other machine on the network works. So while it seems I can ping internally in our network and outside, but when it attempts anything traceroute or URL related it does not work.
