Ubuntu :: How To Disable Powersave Settings
Nov 25, 2010
I've stopped/killed/uninstalled all power related stuff like powernow, powerd, upowerd, acpid, gnome powermanager also turned off APM and ACPI support in bios. And after that I still have a problem: My display's backlight turned off after a long period of inactivity and there is no way turn it on. (Sometimes kill of Xorg helps, sometimes alt-ctrl-f1/atl-control-f7 however I need about half hour to get my backligh back). How to check I indeed removed all power related stuff.

I have recently switched to Ubuntu (10.04) after running my system on Centos for years. This mostly due to much quicker startup times. I have a software that runs as a public presentation software on a public "bigscreen" so my Ubuntu runs like a "kiosk" pc that's always on. When i switched to Ubuntu everything worked lika a charm besides the fact that the screen falls in to "sleep"/"powersave" or something.
I think that i have tried everything to prevent this. I use Gnome and i have set all the powersavings features to off. Ive tried turning acpi off and i also turn dpms off at login. Nothing seems to kill the "screen powersaving" feature. As a desperate act i tried to use a software called Coffeine, this software should prevent powersavings. I added Coffeine to autostart to activate for 48h, I need the screen to atleast stay on for 24h.. Does anyone have an ide what cuses this? Dont really want to go back to Centos now... My system basicly looks like this:

how to disable or customize some of the preview settings on the alt-tab window..MY Question is if its possible to disable the "Grouping" part..such as having multiple nautilus windows.primarily thunderbird is the largest annoyance.. if im writing an email on my laptop and accedentally (touchpad 'palming') off the 'compose message' window; by default and second nature, my brain tells my fingers to alt-tab back into it.
alt tab doesnt allow tabbing into the sub-groups..you CAN although use the arrow keys combined with alt-tab, and eventually find your way down into the hierarchy, and to the right email. this is much too much work compared to a simple alt-tab once, like most other situations.i did notice an option to disable touchpad while youre typing in the settings. is there a gconf entry to adjust the delay? or how many keys need to be typed before its disabled?
problem there, is that if i hit return, or esc, or delete, or pretty much anything that should just be a QUICK one button press, and back to the touch pad, results in waiting 2-3 SECONDS.

Trying to set my cpu to Powersave using the CPU Frequency Scaling applet. When I set it to powersave, it goes back to ondemand on its own. On the earlier versions of Ubuntu, I used to be able to set it from the main menu: system>powermanagement, but with 10.10, I don't get that option. Is there any way that I can set it to powersave permanently? I was also able to set it with Ubuntu Tweak, but it does not have that option either.

I have recently been experiencing some issues with the powersave on my computer. I had my computer set to put the display to sleep after 10 minutes and put the computer to sleep after 30 minutes. The screen saver also activates at 5 minutes. When I woke up my computer (hit the power button) the computer would sometimes tell me that it was going into low graphics mode. I had to reboot to get my x server back. I disabled the power save to fix the problem, but I would really like to have it back. My latest Xorg.log gives an error, but I'm not sure if the power save caused the problem (more below). I am running a computer with an Intel Integrated chipset. My questions:
What caused the x server to crash?Should I post a bug report on Launchpad? If so, how? (im a bit of a noob as far as bug reporting)How can I fix the problem?Xorg.log:
Code:
X.Org X Server 1.7.6
Release Date: 2010-03-17

I have Kaffeine version 1.1 and KDE 4.4.4 release 2 installed on OpenSUSE 11.3. During watching video in Kaffeine the powersave will start and after 30seconds will switch my computer off. When I watch video in Xine I do not have this problem (screen saver timeout is set to 10 seconds). I have not found this option in xine-config.

I am looking at various laptops at the moment and it's appealing to get a quad core (2720QM) when I need the power (yes, I have an application that can utilize many cores in parallel just fine). But, most of the time those extra cores will just there eating battery. Is it possible to switch a few off?

Currently I have two 1920x1080 screens running in Twinview on my Geforce 275 graphics card. Want I want to do is a quick simple way of disabling my secondary monitor when playing video games or using xbmc to watch movies, etc. I've tried a few applets but they require the xandr function which I think Nvidia doesn't support.
Is there a way to disable this quickly other than loading up nvidia-settings and disabling the monitor everytime. I don't really want to use two seperate x sessions and xinerama due to the fact you can't use compositing.

I've turned off power management in the kernel, in the app., have checked the xorg.conf, checked everywhere I can think of, can't find where this is being set. how I can turn this off?

I have a really strange X (?) problem. My physical setup is:
Dell Optiplex 990
VisionTek 210 nV DMS59 PCIe video card (with a DVI splitter)
dual Dell P2411H monitors
I'm running OpenSuSE 11.4 (x86_64 fully patched) with the current nvidia drivers and kernel module. I'm running KDE and kdm in case that matters.
If I power off the two monitors, and then power them on again, the right monitor will come back on. The left monitor (which is the primary one... it's the one where the login screen appears when you are first logging in) reports that it is in power save mode. Wiggling the mouse, typing, etc., do not wake it up. The only thing that wakes it up is the detach the DVI cable from the monitor and reattach it (and sometimes it takes a couple tries).
I have used two (identical) video cards and splitters, and the problem occurred with both, so the problem doesn't appear to be with either of them. I also swapped monitors, but after the swap, the problem still occurred on the left monitor, and the old left monitor (which was now right) came on fine, so it doesn't appear to be a monitor problem.
I'm baffled. For now, I just won't turn off the monitors (or at least not the left monitor).

Did you play too much with compiz and after-a-while you realize that certain functions are not working anymore?
Well, just follow the steps below:
Quote:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
Then,
Quote:
Restart your PC / lappy

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

I have a triboot windows suse 11.3 stable and suse 11.3 factory pc, I would like to share the browsers and email settings between the suse stable and factory, I succeed with thunderbird and firefox moving the /home/.thunderbird and /home/.mozilla in an ext3 shared partition and linking these in the respecive /homes, I found that there isn't a /home/.chromium folder, I found probably /usr/lib64/chromium could be the same as /home/.mozilla for firefox, but I don't know if is secure or can damage my system to move this in a ext3 partition and then link this to the respective /usr/lib64/chromium, /usr/lib64/chromium has root owner, root group, visible and modifiable for root and only visible for group and other.

Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.

I have to go into the program and unclick then reclick the button. i'm using version 1.3.2 (ive tried both deb and source versions). does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? and if there is any configure files that I could configure instead of having to use the gui program.

I'm trying to create a user account for my children in Ubuntu 10.04
When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.
However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?
Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)

I have two major issues, and one minor one, after I started using Ubuntu, I tried searching the forum for them, but couldn't find anything relevant to my problems.First issue: Screenshots and the cursor. This is probably a very easily fixed issue, but none-the-less, I can not figure it out.How do I NOT include the cursor in my screenshots on Ubuntu 9.10?What I do is, I press the Prt Scrn button, and my cursor is always there in the image, and I don't want that.Second is pidgin.I love it, but every time I boot it up, my friendly name is reverted back to firefoxfag.I think it has something to do with me using gmail for msn, but I'm not sure...Also, as a last very small issue, the global hotkeys on audacious don't respond unless i open preferences, open settings for global hotkeys, then close down the settings..

I'm looking for the easiest or cleanest way to copy a user's settings to a new user's settings. I don't need to copy any files from the original user, but setting up a home directory would be great.
If it's done at the command line, that would be just fine. I'm very familiar with working at the command line.
