I am looking at various laptops at the moment and it's appealing to get a quad core (2720QM) when I need the power (yes, I have an application that can utilize many cores in parallel just fine). But, most of the time those extra cores will just there eating battery. Is it possible to switch a few off?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of switching back to Fedora after years of hiatus, but I can't get my wireless card working. The card itself is an Atheros AR2413, and the problem is that it seems to appear OK in various places, BUT it doesn't detect any networks. I'm on Fedora 14.

Video works OK in Windoze XP but just a black screen in Ubuntu 11.04. when somebody will come up with a working driver?
I have an i5 sandy bridge PC with a gigabyte H67M mobo. I have been running maverick amd64 till yesterday. On maverick graphic acceleration didn't work so I decided to upgrade. After upgrade my computer hangs during bootup (with ubuntu logo on screen). I cannot see messages on screen, wasn't ESC key for that? Live CD seems to boot but also hangs computer after loading purple login wallpaper before login dialog is shown. To me it seems a graphic card regression issue since intel mobo graphic card wasn't working fine on maverick too. Also tried to manage with fail-safe graphic mode but this also hangs computer. Is there any log where I can see errors during last bootup from maverick live-cd?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI built a new system with an Intel i5 and ASUS P8H-67-M LX motherboard that uses the Sandy Bridge chip set for video. It is a recent version without the original bugs. I use a 24" monitor, VisionQuest(Plain Tree Systems) and it supports 1920 * 1200. In System Settings > Monitor Preferences I confirm the resolution as 1920 * 1200. The Monitor is detected properly.
Drop down windows, such as my Firefox bookmarks drop below the bottom of the screen, without any scroll bars. I can drag the mouse pointer below the bottom edge of the screen. It disappears. In contrast, on my older system with Ubuntu 10.04 the mouse pointer will never totally disappear. The top tip remains.
It is like Ubuntu, when rendering the display, thinks I have something like a 1920 * 1280 screen, and everything in that bottom 80 vertical just falls off. Seems like a bug, and maybe a simple one to fix.
after installing Natty on my brand new shuttle with Intel's Sandy Bridge Core i5 (2500K), everything works fine except setting up a higher resolution fitting to my screen.All I need is a 2048x1152 resolution, but all the display configuration in the hardware section of the system settings offers is 1024x768, 800x600, 848x480 or 640x480.The monitor is connected via VGA since it doesn't have a DVI or HDMI plug.Is there a way to tell the system there is more capability? Do I need a different driver? What and where can I check this?

I have two Internet connections one connected through LAN (wimax) in to switch having internal DHCP (now we enabled this DHCP to connect our network) and another wireless internet connection connected via USB to a PC, this PC using ubuntu and I am successfully configured ppoe (EVDO), can use this Internet, and this ubuntu possessed PC also connected to Wimax via Network switch. We have 12 PC connected to this switch to share Internet (currently we all using Internet from Wimax through network switch). Still we have a problem of consistency of wimax connection our region. So we decided to connect ppoe (EVDO) in to the same network if Wimax connection is not available. How I connect both in to one network?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a hub with some VoIP phones attached as well as a machine that is used to record the calls. This all works fine as all packets coming to/from the voip phones are also seen by the recorder so it can process them as necessary.
What i want to do is put another machine between the hub and recorder and have it act as a transparent firewall. So far i've managed to successfully set up a bridge on ports eth1 and eth2 and all the packets destined for the recorder go through the bridge fine. The problem is that the bridge is acting as a switch so the packets from the phones are received on eth2 but don't get retransmitted on eth1. Is there any way to configure the bridge so that all packets received on eth2 are transmitted on eth1, i.e. have it act as a hub instead?

However, the problem is the guest os, which starts with -hda k1.img, can not access to the internet. Is there any step I miss? or it is because wireless does not support bridge (I've heard doc says that wireless does not support wireless bridge)?
I recently read in a forum that by default the Linux kernel only activates one of two cores in a dual core processor. Searching online gave one option to find out and that was the mpstat command. I therefore ran the command and got the following output.As the result says, it shows only 1 cpu. I was wondering what I could do to activate both cores in my machine, and whether doing so was going to cause me any problems.

My wireless switching mechanism has just gone the way of the saints but Belkin has supplied a software solution for this occurrence. There is a small app called Fling (surprising) that allows me to switch from the XP machine to the Linux machine but nothing to switch back to the XP. What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work).

And after that I still have a problem: My display's backlight turned off after a long period of inactivity and there is no way turn it on. (Sometimes kill of Xorg helps, sometimes alt-ctrl-f1/atl-control-f7 however I need about half hour to get my backligh back). How to check I indeed removed all power related stuff.

I have a command line OCR program called OCR Shop XTR (Vividata corp) that I am using on a system with a 6-core AMD chip. I changed the bios so that the 6-cores were activated, but htop shows me that while the program is running, I am only getting activity on one core (the program maxes out the one core with consistent usage between 97% and 100%).
I have read that many programs are not written to take advantage of multiple core cpu's. However, I am just hoping that there is some way to get this program to take advantage of the extra cores. Does anyone know of a way to invoke programs from the command line which would spread the workload out among additional cores?

I have a 64bit computer with SUSE 11 installed. When I try to switch an user the computer or monitors go to powersave mode. The only way to power it back on is to restart by pressing the button in the linux box.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have now installed Wheezy on two different hard drives and in each case it seems only one CPU of my dual core CPU computer is recognized. System Monitor, Gkrellm and lscpu show just one when prior to the new install the old Wheezy showed both CPU's. I have put the hard drive into two other computers with dual core CPU's and all show just one CPU.
Interestingly System Profiler and Benchmark (hardinfo?) > Devices > Processors now show a large amount of processor infomation when with the old Wheezy I would only see both CPU's listed and nothing else.
I've a Compaq CQ61 laptop, and i noticed that one of the cores is always at 100%.
I didn't check the duration of the battery but surely it will "eat" my battery in a hurry
Assume someone bind a particular process to a particular CPU core(In multi core machine) by using sched_setaffinity() like functions. Then how we can get that process running core id and CPU core utilisation of that process on that running CPU core(Pragmatically or by a Linux command)?.

During watching video in Kaffeine the powersave will start and after 30seconds will switch my computer off. When I watch video in Xine I do not have this problem (screen saver timeout is set to 10 seconds). I have not found this option in xine-config.

On the earlier versions of Ubuntu, I used to be able to set it from the main menu: system>powermanagement, but with 10.10, I don't get that option. Is there any way that I can set it to powersave permanently? I was also able to set it with Ubuntu Tweak, but it does not have that option either.
