$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-190-modaliases nvidia-glx-190 nvidia-settings-190
Reading package lists... Done

Ubuntu :: Change File Permission Settings To Force All Documents To Inherit Parent Document Settings?

Aug 21, 2011

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:

1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

OpenSUSE :: Sharing Of Chromium Settings / Share The Browsers And Email Settings?

Sep 28, 2010

I have a triboot windows suse 11.3 stable and suse 11.3 factory pc, I would like to share the browsers and email settings between the suse stable and factory, I succeed with thunderbird and firefox moving the /home/.thunderbird and /home/.mozilla in an ext3 shared partition and linking these in the respecive /homes, I found that there isn't a /home/.chromium folder, I found probably /usr/lib64/chromium could be the same as /home/.mozilla for firefox, but I don't know if is secure or can damage my system to move this in a ext3 partition and then link this to the respective /usr/lib64/chromium, /usr/lib64/chromium has root owner, root group, visible and modifiable for root and only visible for group and other.

OpenSUSE Install :: Saving System Settings (yast Settings)

Apr 1, 2011

Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.

Ubuntu :: Advanced User Settings / 'Connect To Ethernet And Wireless' Option Of The Advanced Settings?

Aug 12, 2010

I'm trying to create a user account for my children in Ubuntu 10.04

When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.

However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?

Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)

Ubuntu :: Global Hotkeys On Audacious Don't Respond Unless Open Preferences, Open Settings For Global Hotkeys, Then Close Down The Settings?

Feb 19, 2010

I have two major issues, and one minor one, after I started using Ubuntu, I tried searching the forum for them, but couldn't find anything relevant to my problems.First issue: Screenshots and the cursor. This is probably a very easily fixed issue, but none-the-less, I can not figure it out.How do I NOT include the cursor in my screenshots on Ubuntu 9.10?What I do is, I press the Prt Scrn button, and my cursor is always there in the image, and I don't want that.Second is pidgin.I love it, but every time I boot it up, my friendly name is reverted back to firefoxfag.I think it has something to do with me using gmail for msn, but I'm not sure...Also, as a last very small issue, the global hotkeys on audacious don't respond unless i open preferences, open settings for global hotkeys, then close down the settings..

Ubuntu :: Copy User Settings In 11.04 / Copy A User's Settings To A New User's Settings?

Sep 1, 2011

I'm looking for the easiest or cleanest way to copy a user's settings to a new user's settings. I don't need to copy any files from the original user, but setting up a home directory would be great.

If it's done at the command line, that would be just fine. I'm very familiar with working at the command line.

Ubuntu :: Xorg DPI Settings Not Being Used?

Jan 25, 2010

First off my monitor is a 720p plasma, native resolution is 1024x768 and yes it's 16:9. Video is onboard ATI 4200 (AMD780G). and I've tried the fglrx, ati, and radeon drivers. So I would like my dpi settings to reflect that the pixels are longer horizontally (that there are less of them)

So i've been changing DisplaySize, and tweaking X with other options like [Option "NoDDC" "true"] etc. Nothing seems to change the display.

So then I check xdpyinfo and it reports what I have in X and it's what i've configured.. So I try wiping out X and seeing what it picks up and what do you know, it's auto-detecting everything fine.

Code:
screen #0:
dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (160x90 millimeters)
resolution: 53x95 dots per inch

So the problem, it's not using these settings. I can change the DisplaySize to 1000 10 or 10 1000 and the display does not change, but xdpyinfo does correctly report what I've entered.

Ubuntu :: Same Theme With Different Settings

Mar 22, 2011

Whenever I keep the computer on overnight, the next morning I am using a different theme OR the same theme with different settings. My normally dark colored lower panel is now bright colored, icons are different, some of them don't exist (hence the other theme I presume) plus the extra keys on my keyboard (for audio control) work with a huge delay. When I press Volume-up for example, the volume will be changed after several minutes. Really several minutes.

I have had this with all kinds of Ubuntu versions. At the moment I use LinuxMint 9 Isadora and I am having the same problems. I hear so many people say they always use their computer 24/7 without any problem. Why can't I do that? Why do I always have these problems? What is going on here? Who can tell me what is wrong here? I sure could use some help because I hate this situation. This should not happen. So please, somebody, help me.

Ubuntu :: What All Settings Mean' And 'using' Compiz

Apr 9, 2011

I've been looking around on the Internet for a comprehensive tutorial on 'how Compiz works', 'what all the settings mean' and 'using' Compiz; but, so far, have only seen things describing how to do a certain thing or other. I've gone into Compiz Configuration Settings Manager and poked around but what I've seen in there seems extremely technical (in other words - I don't know what the heck these settings mean or what would happen if I changed one of them). So far I've manged to get the magnifying glass thing and I have wobbly windows (don't know if I can take credit for that though). So I see all these amazing demonstrations of it on you tube and whatnot and I wish I could do some of that stuff but I'd really like to approach this by learning all about Compiz from A to Z rather than learn this thing and then that thing, etc.

Is there anything out there that you know of? Ann ebook or something? I saw a book called: "Compiz Fusion" URL... that really, interests me but it is not available as an eBook (believe me I looked and looked and looked) and it's pretty expensive.

Ubuntu :: Where To Put IO Scheduler Settings

Apr 24, 2011

I recently got an SSD and want to switch to using the noop IO scheduler permanently. I understand how to change the scheduler at runtime, but where can I put the command to make it apply on bootup?

I know you can pass "elevator=noop" to the kernel, but that sets all the drives to that scheduler, which I don't want as I still have ye olde spinning drives too - I just want a single drive set to noop..

I'm guessing there's an init script somewhere which is ideal for this, but I've no clue which!

Ubuntu :: Some Settings Not Lasting A Reboot ?

Jan 22, 2010

I noticed that every time I reboot some system settings sort of roll-back automatically to some time in the past.

So far I noticed these:
-All the aMule setting. Includes connection ports and Incoming folder, very annoying.

-Firefox search box engines. every reboot the list of engines rolls back to include a lot of engines i don't want and have to remove every time. this is the only thing in Firefox that is affected, bookmarks and add-ons stick.

-Keyboard layouts. Tried clicking "apply system-wide". still rolls-back after reboot.

What could cause this? How can I set these things permanently?

I'm using ubuntu 9.10 32-bit

Ubuntu :: PDF Printing Settings Configuration?

I looked around to see if anyone has ever asked this before, but without success. Obviously I've been using Ubuntu's integrated Print-to-File/PDF solution, (which compared to other OS's is pretty well implemented), but is there any place where I could control the output more deeply, for configuring level and type of compression, font embedding, securiy/encryption, etc, or am I asking for too much and should install 3rd party software?

Ubuntu :: Screen Sleeps Despite Settings - 9.10

Feb 7, 2010

So I've recently switched over to Ubuntu as my media center OS, and I'm running Hulu Desktop (which works very nicely).

The problem is, the screen keeps sleeping on me after inactivity and it won't come back unless I use the keyboard or mouse (the remote won't wake it). The computer is still running, audio and all - and just a black screen.

I have the screensaver set to never, the power saving settings set as high as they go - and it still does it.

I've searched the forums for a solution but I can't seem to come up with anything; any ideas?

Looks like I found a solution; Caffeine (launchpad.net/caffeine) is a little applet that will disable sleep/screensaver while in certain apps (or for a certain amount of time). I don't know why changing the system preferences wouldn't accomplish this, but Caffeine did the trick anyway (and actually works out better anyway)

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Backup Certain Settings

Mar 14, 2010

I reinstall my system very frecuently, and I was wondering if there is a file where some gnome settings are stored, so I can just backup it, and have all my settings like they were before reinstalling.

-Icons on the top panel.
-Keyboard Shortcuts
-Power Management
-Sound
-Keyboard Layout settings.

I know I could have /home on another partition, but I'd rather backup only the settings I mentioned above, and have the rest of my /home cleaned.

Also, Is there a way to setup SCIM as the default IME using a command?
