Fairly new to Ubuntu and I have a quick question. I have XP in virtual box and I just installed Office. I now need to access the office files I have in my windows partition on the computer. How can I do this?
I've created a new user for a SSH tunnel only. After login I can access all directories because permissions is set for "Others" to "Access files".Now my question: Is this normal that permissions for Folder access for "Others" is always set to "Access files"?I don't want my SSH tunnel user accessing the directories.
I changed to wubi last night, i decided to go that way cause i was informed it was a safe way to try giving it a try for linux and ubuntu without any special effort needed to be payed and easily deleted if i am not pleased.Thankfully i am pretty satisfied with the results, i pretty much dealt with most of the issues i have faced so far successfully and i am running it ok beside one important thing.See i am using my laptop, which has a hdd of 250GB.On my Vista there are 2 different hdd C+E by default, they separated my hdd.So while i have windows on C and E is pretty much used for my additional data(see movies, music etc) when i installed wubi i installed it on E, thought it would be better and it had more space.
Now though, while i can access threw ubuntu all my files that were located on C(vista) i cant access any of the E ones, and search file dont helps either. The "vista hdd" as ubuntu describes it, its a 250 gb disk on computer, which means it should contain both of the vista disks. But sadly thats not the case.i cant seem to be able to find them anywhere.
the permissions for my home directory were accidentally changed from 'access files' to 'create and delete files', and I changed them back, but ever since then I am not able to change any preferences/settings at all. power management, themes, panels, emerald, anything. my user account is supposed to be the administrator, and all the user privliges are checked. how to get control of my computer back?
My system reports it successfully connected to the VPN at my workplace (pptp / windows server). So I had to enter my username and password in the VPN configuration screen, etc. My machine has Ubuntu 10.04. I tried to find out how to open the files on the server. In windows, after opening the vpn I would go to this location in the file manager: \company-fs1UsersJulian_b This would show me the files I am looking for. In the linux terminal, and the Nautilus file manager, these locations do not exist. I tried using mount.cifs to mount this location and it didn't work. (fails with these messages : mounting the DFS root for a particular server not implemented yet no ip address specified and hostname not found). How do I get to these files on the Windows share?
I was dual booting windows 7 RC and Ubuntu, and then I upgraded to Windows 7 when it came out, but left the RC on my computer because I had some files on there that I needed. Some of the files that I have on the hard drive where the RC is are encrypted and now I can't access that operating system therefore I can't access the files.
picasa & digiKam can connect & grab pix/vids+ i can see my files in dolphine with the path camera:/USB PTP Class Camera@usb:/how do i get to these files from the command line ?i'd like to process new videos with a scriptbut for now i'm having to use the GUI to copy locally... then run my scriptmy setup (though probably irrelevant): kubuntu lucid + a new shiny iphone4 (preloaded with 4.0.2, so not JB'd, yet ... otherwise i'd just SCP the files over)
I have dual boot. Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I don't have a partition. I have formatted the disk to NTFS then installed XP first. After that I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS under Windows.
I have decided to access Windows files from Ubuntu. I have used Gparted to know where my windows is. Then I have found this.
Our computer is loaded with Ubuntu, and my wife and I have separate accounts, which is fine. I have a backup drive with data and music and, if I want to reinstall or back something up, I have to log in as each user to do so. That is OK security wise, but I want to do a complete reload and would prefer to be able to access her home folder from my account, back it up to the other drive, reinstall and then copy everything back so she can use her files.
Also, I have a couple of files in my home partition that she wants access to occassionally. I would like her to be able to access my home directory to get to those files. If I put them on the backup drive, she cannot open them as I have the permissions. We also run KMyMoney, and would like to be able to use the same file whichever user is logged in.
I have both Windows And Ubuntu 11.04 installed. Right now I'm using Ubuntu, but when I wanted to listen to my music I can't seem to find it. It is located on the C-drive in Windows, but I can't find any ways to access that drive. I've also just started using Ubuntu (like 2 hours or so) so I do not know much about it.
Sounds a bit odd but I'll try explain. My files I want to use in my apache folder now tell me I dont have permission to access them. When I change the permissions again, they just go back to blocked again.
I am trying to access my ubuntu (11.04) partition (ext4) from windows 7. I have tried explore2fs but it works only with ext2 ad ext3 partitions. I have downloaded samba for sharing but as I suppose it doesn't work that way.
I am a new users to Linux and I am using Ubuntu 11.04. In my laptop, I have two logical drive C: and D:. I have installed Windows XP in C drive and Ubuntu in D drive. From Ubuntu, I can mount the C drive and can access the files I stored there when logged in Windows. But from ubuntu, I can't access or see any files I stored in D drive when I logged in Windows. Even I can't mount the drive from Linux.
I have Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.04 dual booting on one machine.I'd like to access my Windows 7 files from within Ubuntu (and preferably vice-versa). I've not been able to find any tutorials online to tell me how this is done. There seems to be many tools for Win to Ext2/Ext3 but nothing really providing the solution I need.
On my laptop I have a dual boot of Vista and Ubuntu (Karmic Koala). I have 3 Vista partitions and 1 Ubuntu partition (well, two if you include the swap disk).
Recently I had started to notice that when trying to boot into Ubuntu, it simply wouldn't. It would have a screen with lots of text which would every few seconds refresh yet it never really looked any different, although I'd be unable to tell. I'd leave it there for several minutes and nothing would happen.
I wasn't worried for a while because I only used Ubuntu for some scientific work over the summer and I haven't needed it for a while but now I desperately need those files. I've tried three programs that apparently make Linux partitions accessible in windows but I've been succesful with none of them. I'm now seriously worrying that there has been a harddrive error of sorts...but then I only have one physical harddrive on my laptop and my windows partitions are working okay.
I found my Karmic DVD and I tried to run "run Ubuntu without changing your system" but that wouldn't load after ages.
I haven't tried to reinstall Ubuntu because I've read that doing so would wipe the existing files.
i've just installed 10.04 lts onto an external usb drive and everything seems to be working smoothly - except i cant work out how to access the other files on the usb drive. - i used the wubi installer to install ubuntu onto the drive.
I've setup a webserver with LAMP and wondered if it was possible to edit the files without having to login through FTP, as would be the case if I was editing on an IIS server?
Attempting to use PLACES>Home (or Documents,Bin,Desktop, etc.)brings up the error message "There is no Windows program configured to open this type of file." If I open Open Office I can find all files in home, documents, etc. and open them. The computer is otherwise functioning normally but using the usual methods all the files that should show look empty. How did this happen? I was attempting to use WINE to load Avery Wizard (a Win utility) through AWsetup.exe. To do this I changed permissions for that file but I have subsequently removed the file and its subfiles using the terminal.
i just installed ubuntu, i am having a problem in accessing my windows files. Now as you see the 500 gb hd is mounted, but when i go to places it shows that i have 2 500 gb hds, none of them is actually the one that i have the windows system on it or my files.i looked throughout the whole web, i need your help if you know how can i access my windows files.
I'm new to Linux and have taken over at a company where the linux admin walked out. he has several older linux based servers running version 8.1 i tried running the command sudo apt-get install swat xinetd to setup swat but i get an error that it can't find the package. in addition, this directory xinetd is no where to be found under the etc directory. i've verified that samba is in fact installed on these servers but for some reason the xinetd and inetd directories are not on these servers.
Could it be possible that this older version of linux does not support Swat? i'm considering upgrading very soon to the latest but my main problem right now is i need to copy all web server html files that he had on the web Server i know there are different ways to copy files from linux systems but need the best way to copy all the files so none of the website links get broke off this linux server over to my windows server.
Since i don't have access to anything of the directories nor files on the web server, what is the best way to copy these files and folders off this server?
I am new to Linux. I was running Ubuntu 10.04. While downloading software, one of my downloads changed changed my OS to Xubuntu. From browsing the available software, I surmised(wrongfully it turned out) that files starting were X files. In Synaptic, I deleted all files starting with X. This I found is a form of hari kari. When I boot up now, I have a choice of straight to Ubuntu or "Help" mode. If I boot up straight, I get to Ubuntu logo and it hangs up running the dots between red and green and I give a warm boot to restart. If I choose the "Help" route, I go thru what a windows user would call DOS commands or activity. At the end of whatever it is doing, it asks for user ID and password. I give it those and I am given a command line. I don't know what to do with this. I would like to access my stored files and save them. If nothing can be done to save them, I will just start over by reinstalling 10.04. BTW I am running 7.1 from an old boot disc. Is there some way that I can retrieve my files?
I'm a newbie and wish to copy files from USB drive to some location in Ubuntu Linux and have tried with the command 'sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb' and have received following message 'mount: /dev/sda1 already mounted or /mnt/usb busy. mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is mounted on /boot'I don't understand what it says, since I don't find the usb drive neither in '/boot' path nor I find it in '/mnt/usb'. So please make me understand how do I access the files on flash drive and copy at the desired place
1) Can I use the LiveCD to access my files stored in Windows? (The attached screenshot shows my Computer.)
2) If so, can I backup the files to DVD using CDDVD Creator, which comes with Ubuntu? If not, what must I do to accomplish these 2 things if I install Ubuntu?
thought I'd take the plunge and use it as the OS for a new HTPS running XBMC. I installed a second 1TB HDD to use as a media tank that I formatted to NTFS. All is well except I cannot get XBMC to see the second drive. Its mounted and I can access it no worries, but when I go into Videos,> add source, > i'm given the home folder and my network as options, neither of which have the second drive on them. (my windows network can see the second drive but it doesn't appear as an option in XBMC
I'm completely new to the Linux OS. It is very foreign to me, i'm very used to the way windows does everything, including how windows does installation. I know that Linux doesn't understand .exe files like windows does... which is part of the problem. I have a linux zip file of a program (Jgrasp) that I want to install. I unzipped it into my home file and then wanted to run the program, but I have no idea what to do next. How the heck do I run the program if i can't access the .exe's what files launch a program in linux? Also how do i get it to recognize the JDK files?
My company runs a Windows server. I can connect remotely via a very slow desktop emulator program in VirtualBox or I can just VPN and access whatever files I need. #2 is the preferred option.
So far I have officially setup the VPN and everything. It logs in. It gives me the little lock symbol above the Network Manger icon. I'm connected!
But...
How do I actually access the darn files available via the VPN? We keep most files on a single server for the company. Internally, it looks something like "//Bob/Folder/". At the office I have the shortcut set to the "folder" portion of the above since that's where things are located.
I'm not seeing anything related to the VPN in Nautilus, under Network... squat. I've tried several methods of using the "Places > Connect to Server" function while setting it to "Windows Share" as well. Honestly, I'm unsure if this is appropriate nor what to put in the fields (Server, Share, Folder, User Name, Domain Name) if this is the right place to be.
