May 8, 2011how do I fix this error with my folders? It started after I had some issues with rebooting a while back. Upgrading to a new distribution didn't help it.

Ubuntu :: Opening And Viewing Folders - Error 255
Feb 17, 2011I switched to ubuntu in 2008 dual booting it with windows vista. I loved ubuntu but I began to run into a few issues and eventually went to windows only for a while. Well I am back into it as of november of 2010 since my windows Os was just ticking me off. I absolutely LOVE linux but I've run into the exact same issues I had before. The most pressing issue at the moment is the fact that for some reason when I click on anything in "places" such as documents, music, etc. nothing happens. This includes clicking on the HD on the desktop. I click and then menu goes away as if its going to open the folder but it doesn't. Going to computer works and I can go from there but I want to know why this has happened seemingly out of the blue and happened both times I installed ubuntu? When I typed sudo nautilus into terminal I get the following:

I am not sure exactly what this means but maybe it is a clue. I am actually planning on reinstalling linux at some point because I am dual booting and running out of room so I am gonna kick windows to the curb (it wont load up anyway) but I want to resolve this since its happened twice and will again i am sure.
Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Options - Sub Folders Permissions Error
Oct 30, 2010I'm on Ubuntu 10.10. I installed Samba and went Administration > Samba. Added a folder [Videos] to share (this folder is on an ext partition). I then went to the folder [Videos] Right+Click > Sharing Options. I selected 'Share this folder', I put in a name and comment, checked Allow others to create and delete files in this folder and checked Guest Access.
When I view this shared folder [Videos] from my Windows PC I can access it with no problems but when I try drill down into sub folders I get a permissions error. [Attached a screenshot of the error]. If I share each folder separately then I can access them but obviously I'd like to share a folder and all it's contents.

Mar 27, 2010I am setting up a lubuntu nas with all of my music, movies, etc on it. I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it

Mar 31, 2010The Problem was I wanted to open my /home/Pictures folder and have it display the contents of the My Pictures folder in my windows partition. This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies.This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).

May 30, 2010I'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...
I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.
I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.

I am attempting to share other folders within the shared folders to another user as read only but have not had any success. Jun 27, 2011If I have a hard-disk with Ubuntu fully installed on it and I want to - all of a sudden - use Windows XP, is it mandatory that I firstly format the hard-disk first? So far, I have used two versions of Windows XP; one of them is from a few years before the other. Both copies of Windows XP when in start-up from booting from CD are causing errors. One of them is a BSOD error (0x0000007B) and the next Windows CD is stopping and giving me an error with setupdd.sys (error code 4). Is it required that the hard-disk is formatted before you even put a Windows boot CD in?

Nov 13, 2010I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and it might not be possible to do what I want to do here. First I'll explain the situation. Throught trying to tidy up my mp3 collection usign various pieces of software I now have a folder structure that I want (My MusicArtistalbum rack), However, in the process, I have been left with lots of other folders - these have had the mp3's removed but they contain other files (artwork, playlists, .nfo files - that kind of thing).
What I'm looking for is either a premade solution or help with a script to do the following : Check all folders in my music folder, if the folder doesn't contain any mp3's then check the subfolders, if none of them contain mp3's then delete the main folder (regardless of what otehr files are within it).
It seems like I should be able to do this - but not sure how. Incidentally, I have backed up my music folder to an external disk - so I can't do any lasting damage

Mar 16, 2011Lately (since about Ubuntu 9.10 though I'm on 10.4 now) there seems a trend towards showing folders in the GUI but not through the command line interface. Most prominent examples are the trash folder ("Waste basket", nowadays) and Samba mounts.
As it happens, I *like* the command line and would rather access those folders from CLI rather than having to use the GUI.
The folders don't show up in /etc/mtab either. Yet in "Places" they show up with an eject button next to them, implying they're mounted. Right clicking the folders in "Places" doesn't allow me to show folder properties or path. It doesn't give any further clues.
So, where did my trash folder, samba mounts, usb drives go? I'd like to be in control of my system rather than to have it control me!

Jun 15, 2011I have samba and file sharing enabled. Everytime I search, I come up with 25 different solutions and none seem to work. I can't share drives between ubuntu computers or vista and ubuntu. I'm just this side of giving up, this seems as if it shouldn't be so difficult.

Jan 7, 2010I have a network folder bookmarked the file browser. there is a user name and password required to access this folder. i set it to save my password forever the first time i accessed it. when my password is forced to change i can no longer access this folder. i would expect this. however it doesn't ask me for a new password when i try to access the folder. just says unable to access. Nor can i figure out how to get to a place where i can manually update this password.even if i try to smb directly to it it says unable to access with no prompt for credentials. if i smb to the folder above it it asks for credentials, and i can get into it. but when i click on the folder i want still says can not access.

Jan 7, 2010how I can gain access to folder in Ubuntus 9.10 terminal. when I use a command like ./ Documents or ~/ Documents The terminal only states that "There is a folder named Documents" but never lets me enter. I can create a folder using the mkdir command and I can navigate that folder as long as that terminal session is active. When I close out the terminal and try to reopen it denies acces the same way as mentioined above. Do I need to set some type of access permissions or?

Jan 18, 2010I want to make a script to create a videos , photos, and documents folder in all of my (or anyone's) user's home folder. Wildcards don't seem to work if I try to put in: sudo mkdir /home/WILDCARD/videos here is my error.
mkdir: cannot create directory `/home/*/videos1': No such file or directory
and just to clarify i want all user's to have there own seperate folders not shared.
P.S. I tried with the -p switch and no luck. I just got a new home folder for * with the videos folder inside.

Jan 19, 2010Is there a reason I dont have privileged access to any of my folders, in /home, or anywhere else?Running Ubuntu Karmic and Win 7, with a separate partition to share files between both OS. It was working fine, until I installed Kubuntu on a separate partition, and now Ubuntu acts funny (i can browse anywhere, but cant create new folders, download files, execute files, etc. The problem exists in any and all folders (/ and /home)I can do so if I access nautilus as root...I now reinstalled ubuntu, and still the same problem.

Jan 19, 2010During two instances now I have had to create a .js file in a folder. In one instance, (POLIPO) I can create the file, I just cannot save it. I have momentarily forgotten the error message stating why. In the second instance, I have to create a user.js file inside my Firefox folder to allow cut/copy/paste functionality in order to fully utilize an internet forum. I have a Windows desktop at home and used URL...to "fix" Firefox. My laptop, however, needs to have the same capabilities and is running Ubuntu 9.04, fully updated, and Firefox 3.0.17, fully updated.
In short, I would like to know how to have complete control over functions such as "create file" EVERY time I want to. Is this a permission issue? I have only one user on the Ubuntu box. Also, how can I modify Firefox to allow for cut/copy/paste in the Mozilla Rich Text Editor?I am new to using Linux, so a minor spoonfeeding may be required.

Feb 14, 2010I am using Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. I set up my main user- admin and loaded the folders of files I would be working on and the relevant additional programs. Now, I would like to set up a second user so that someone else can use the computer with access to many of my files and folders, but not all, which would defeat having a second user. I have set sharing preferences for all of my folders. I have giving most rights to my second user. Yet the second user cannot even see ANY of my folders when they sign-in.

Feb 24, 2010often we need to add attachments to things, like adding a picture to a gmail when composing or to add a picture to a document. When I try to do this, nautilus shows only folders. It shows all the folders I would expect to see but none of these folders actually contain documents. If I navigate using places and open folders of course all my files are there, I just cant see them when trying to insert a file. Why might that be? Does anyone know?
I notice the "select which types of file to show" pulldown is empty - whats happened?
Ubuntu :: Folders Gone Haywire After Tweak?
Mar 15, 2010I used ubuntu tweak to change where my default folders are (im dual booted with windows 7 and most of my data is still in them folders), but now after logging back in and going to my home folder ("dan"), all of the original folders have gone, and appeared strangely on the desktop.
I dont know if i accidently messed with some other settings but is there any way I can restore this all back to how it was then have another go at the "tweaking"?
