Giving Ubuntu 9.04 a try with Ubuntu One. Have just pasted a bunch of folders and files into Ubuntu One folder on the PC and I now see that the folders and files are marked with red circles with white crosses on.
What does this mean? Some problem found?
There seems to be a common solution to get the webcam working with Skype - rather than launching with Skype you launch with LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype - so far so good. When I do this I get the error There was an error launching the application. Details: Failed to execute child process "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l2convert.so" (No such file or directory). But I do have that directory and file on my system.
A ubuntu community doc talks about the terminal command sudo ld.so.preload-manager when I action this I get sudo ld.so.preload-manager /usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so [sudo] password for dad: sudo: ld.so.preload-manager: command not found
i want to install a program called VMPK its a virtual keyboard, but through googling i seem to keep running in circles. The program comes as a tarball, which i have no idea how to install (still semi new to Linux... within my first 2 months)... i have read something about compiling it as an RPM but i cant seem to find anything else other than that... this is probably something super simple

How can I mount the music folder on shared to $Home/Music, and the Videos folder on shared to $Home/Videos? I want to mount the different folders on the partition to different folders in home.

I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe Problem was I wanted to open my /home/Pictures folder and have it display the contents of the My Pictures folder in my windows partition. This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies.This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).

View 1 Replies View RelatedTo get around the limitation of Ubuntu one only allowing synchronization of files in the home folder and not supporting symlinks I am trying to mount my big file store partition in my home folder as well as in the /media/hd folder where it is usually mounted.When I restart Ubuntu however there is a very scary message saying that my hard drive is not working correctly and when I say "cancel" it loads fine but only one mount point is mounted.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty new to Ubuntu and it might not be possible to do what I want to do here. First I'll explain the situation. Throught trying to tidy up my mp3 collection usign various pieces of software I now have a folder structure that I want (My MusicArtistalbum rack), However, in the process, I have been left with lots of other folders - these have had the mp3's removed but they contain other files (artwork, playlists, .nfo files - that kind of thing).
What I'm looking for is either a premade solution or help with a script to do the following : Check all folders in my music folder, if the folder doesn't contain any mp3's then check the subfolders, if none of them contain mp3's then delete the main folder (regardless of what otehr files are within it).
It seems like I should be able to do this - but not sure how. Incidentally, I have backed up my music folder to an external disk - so I can't do any lasting damage
I can't delete folders from ubuntu one's web site there is no delete button that i can find.

View 5 Replies View RelatedLately (since about Ubuntu 9.10 though I'm on 10.4 now) there seems a trend towards showing folders in the GUI but not through the command line interface. Most prominent examples are the trash folder ("Waste basket", nowadays) and Samba mounts.
As it happens, I *like* the command line and would rather access those folders from CLI rather than having to use the GUI.
The folders don't show up in /etc/mtab either. Yet in "Places" they show up with an eject button next to them, implying they're mounted. Right clicking the folders in "Places" doesn't allow me to show folder properties or path. It doesn't give any further clues.
So, where did my trash folder, samba mounts, usb drives go? I'd like to be in control of my system rather than to have it control me!
how do I fix this error with my folders? It started after I had some issues with rebooting a while back. Upgrading to a new distribution didn't help it.

Yet, the folders (in oder to browse the mail accounts, check for new messages, etc.) are not showing up.The folder pane is showing, but empty. I can toggle between 'Unified Folders', 'All Folders', 'Unread Folders', etc., but they are all empty.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a network folder bookmarked the file browser. there is a user name and password required to access this folder. i set it to save my password forever the first time i accessed it. when my password is forced to change i can no longer access this folder. i would expect this. however it doesn't ask me for a new password when i try to access the folder. just says unable to access. Nor can i figure out how to get to a place where i can manually update this password.even if i try to smb directly to it it says unable to access with no prompt for credentials. if i smb to the folder above it it asks for credentials, and i can get into it. but when i click on the folder i want still says can not access.
View 3 Replies View Relatedhow I can gain access to folder in Ubuntus 9.10 terminal. when I use a command like ./ Documents or ~/ Documents The terminal only states that "There is a folder named Documents" but never lets me enter. I can create a folder using the mkdir command and I can navigate that folder as long as that terminal session is active. When I close out the terminal and try to reopen it denies acces the same way as mentioined above. Do I need to set some type of access permissions or?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to make a script to create a videos , photos, and documents folder in all of my (or anyone's) user's home folder. Wildcards don't seem to work if I try to put in: sudo mkdir /home/WILDCARD/videos here is my error.
mkdir: cannot create directory `/home/*/videos1': No such file or directory
and just to clarify i want all user's to have there own seperate folders not shared.
P.S. I tried with the -p switch and no luck. I just got a new home folder for * with the videos folder inside.
Is there a reason I dont have privileged access to any of my folders, in /home, or anywhere else?Running Ubuntu Karmic and Win 7, with a separate partition to share files between both OS. View 4 Replies View RelatedDuring two instances now I have had to create a .js file in a folder. In one instance, (POLIPO) I can create the file, I just cannot save it. I have momentarily forgotten the error message stating why. In the second instance, I have to create a user.js file inside my Firefox folder to allow cut/copy/paste functionality in order to fully utilize an internet forum. I have a Windows desktop at home and used URL...to "fix" Firefox. My laptop, however, needs to have the same capabilities and is running Ubuntu 9.04, fully updated, and Firefox 3.0.17, fully updated.
In short, I would like to know how to have complete control over functions such as "create file" EVERY time I want to. Is this a permission issue? I have only one user on the Ubuntu box. Also, how can I modify Firefox to allow for cut/copy/paste in the Mozilla Rich Text Editor?I am new to using Linux, so a minor spoonfeeding may be required.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. I set up my main user- admin and loaded the folders of files I would be working on and the relevant additional programs. Now, I would like to set up a second user so that someone else can use the computer with access to many of my files and folders, but not all, which would defeat having a second user. I have set sharing preferences for all of my folders. I have giving most rights to my second user. Yet the second user cannot even see ANY of my folders when they sign-in.

When I try to do this, nautilus shows only folders. It shows all the folders I would expect to see but none of these folders actually contain documents. If I navigate using places and open folders of course all my files are there, I just cant see them when trying to insert a file. Why might that be? Does anyone know?

I used ubuntu tweak to change where my default folders are (im dual booted with windows 7 and most of my data is still in them folders), but now after logging back in and going to my home folder ("dan"), all of the original folders have gone, and appeared strangely on the desktop.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, and I can't open any folders. Nor can I put any files onto my desktop. I read on another thread that you should try reinstalling Nautilus, so I did that, and nothing changed. I also tried to open a folder in the Terminal, in this case the downloads folder, and I got this.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently updated to 10.04, accidentally deleted the panels, and somehow screwed up evolution in the processes. I am certain beyond a reasonable doubt that I had run evolution successfully after the upgrade. After attempting to restore the panels, evolution started acting differently. When opening evolution, it acts as though I am opening it for the first time, prompting me for account information, pop/imap, etc etc. There is still data in the .evolution folder. I glanced at one of the files in the calendar folder and recognized information from my personal calendar.

I used PhotoRec to see what it could recover, it saved them to my home directory. 488 folders I cant do anything with as I don't have permission?? I set up root and gave myself admin power but still cant delete them. If I log in as root, where can I find my home folder so I can delete the majority of these folders. Most unfortunately have nothing of value in them.
