Ubuntu :: Bookmarked Network Folders?
Jan 7, 2010
I have a network folder bookmarked the file browser. there is a user name and password required to access this folder. i set it to save my password forever the first time i accessed it. when my password is forced to change i can no longer access this folder. i would expect this. however it doesn't ask me for a new password when i try to access the folder. just says unable to access. Nor can i figure out how to get to a place where i can manually update this password.even if i try to smb directly to it it says unable to access with no prompt for credentials. if i smb to the folder above it it asks for credentials, and i can get into it. but when i click on the folder i want still says can not access.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux 7.8 with Linux 3.16.0-0 (x86_64) from backports and XFCE. I am using nautilus for the default file manager because thunar is not able to connect to server. My problem is that when i want to upload a file from iceweasel, the bookmarked webdav location on nautilus is not shown. This mean that iceweasel doesn't use nautilus? If so how to change this? Nautilus is checked in the default programs.

I am trying to configure MPD (music player daemon) to work on my headless ubuntu server. Everything works well, but MPD cannot see the music files stored on my windows XP main computer. These files are stored at smb://LASTNAME/share/music Is there a way to directly mount this drive, so it is accessible at something like /mnt/music, in order that they work with MPD?

I am trying to upload a photo to craigslist from a NAS drive on my network but when I go to choose the file, the network resources are not listed in the file tree. Or maybe I am not looking in the right place? Take a look at the attached. This is what I see, but there should be something on the left pane that says "Network" so that you can access your workgroup shares.
I also attached a screenshot from my "files & folders" menu which clearly shows such a "network" option in the file tree. How come it's in one place and not the other?

I'm looking for a simple way keep two identical folders one on my laptop and one on my desktop up to date with each other so it doesn't matter which one I was last working from, they will both be equally up to date with the exact same copy of each file at the click of a button (or the running of a script). I did have two different scripts that I used to use but I seem to be having trouble with them now, perhaps something is different in 10.10 that causing hiccups.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 since 2-3 weeks. First I tried live CD and the OS seems to be very good. So i installed it on my laptop. So far i had no problems until I tried to access the shared network folders of my Server running on MS Windows Vista and another trial PC running WindowsXP. I'm trying to solve this since 2-3 days, I haven't found a solution.1st of all my network works fine. All computers can ping each other and as the laptop had Windows XP installed the server was accessable.1st I installed the SMB4k tool with this program. I could see the computer names, but as soon as I select a Windows computer the tool searches and nothing happens.
I tried a lot of different variations of this command but in the end I receive this kind of error. I also tried to add -o user=username pass=password, nothing changed. After this I searched information about this error, some forum threads I googled are telling the SMB4K tool modifies the /etc/sudoers file and cause this error. So i tried to change it back with some kind of sudo chmod 0640 etc/sudoers but this won't work it seems I can not modify or edit thisw file using sudo. With the pyNeighbourhood tool I could only see my Laptop but not the Windows PCs.At the end I will install Linux systems on all of my PCs, but only if all my tests will pass .

I've got Samba up and running with the correct workgroup information, and I can access files on my network share, but I can't figure out a way to point Thunderbird to a network folder to import my old local folders. Is there any way to do this? Do I need to some how map the location so Thunderbird thinks it is physically on the local machine? If so, how would one do that?

I have a home network and I use Samba to share files. Now when I am on the network, I can see the shares just fine, but if I use a crossover cable, I cannot see or access the folders or files. My goal is to use a crossover cable from one computer with clonezilla to my server in order to use Samba to make an image of my workstation and save the image on my server. But everytime I try to connect with clonezilla I get a persmissions error and the share will not mount. I tried going to the shell and mounting as root, but that did not work either.
I have another server which is only a console and it works though I am unsure why. The share though is a mounted usb drive while on the one that does not work, it is on the internal hard drive.I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or anything I could try to narrow down the problem. Oh, I can access the share using ssh, but not samba. One other thing, the shares are set to allow read/write access to everyone so I don't see why I can not access it.

I am setting up a lubuntu nas with all of my music, movies, etc on it. I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it

The Problem was I wanted to open my /home/Pictures folder and have it display the contents of the My Pictures folder in my windows partition. This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies. This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).

Prelude: OpenSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop), installed Novell client 2.0 SP2 (novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso).
I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.

I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

To get around the limitation of Ubuntu one only allowing synchronization of files in the home folder and not supporting symlinks I am trying to mount my big file store partition in my home folder as well as in the /media/hd folder where it is usually mounted. When I restart Ubuntu however there is a very scary message saying that my hard drive is not working correctly and when I say "cancel" it loads fine but only one mount point is mounted.

I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and it might not be possible to do what I want to do here. First I'll explain the situation. Throught trying to tidy up my mp3 collection usign various pieces of software I now have a folder structure that I want (My MusicArtistalbum rack), However, in the process, I have been left with lots of other folders - these have had the mp3's removed but they contain other files (artwork, playlists, .nfo files - that kind of thing).
What I'm looking for is either a premade solution or help with a script to do the following : Check all folders in my music folder, if the folder doesn't contain any mp3's then check the subfolders, if none of them contain mp3's then delete the main folder (regardless of what otehr files are within it).
It seems like I should be able to do this - but not sure how. Incidentally, I have backed up my music folder to an external disk - so I can't do any lasting damage

Lately (since about Ubuntu 9.10 though I'm on 10.4 now) there seems a trend towards showing folders in the GUI but not through the command line interface. Most prominent examples are the trash folder ("Waste basket", nowadays) and Samba mounts.
As it happens, I *like* the command line and would rather access those folders from CLI rather than having to use the GUI.
The folders don't show up in /etc/mtab either. Yet in "Places" they show up with an eject button next to them, implying they're mounted. Right clicking the folders in "Places" doesn't allow me to show folder properties or path. It doesn't give any further clues.
So, where did my trash folder, samba mounts, usb drives go? I'd like to be in control of my system rather than to have it control me!

Upon opening Thunderbird today, no single folder (inbox, trash, local folders, etc.) is showing. The mail accounts are all still correctly registered, the search function finds the messages. Yet, the folders (in oder to browse the mail accounts, check for new messages, etc.) are not showing up.The folder pane is showing, but empty. I can toggle between 'Unified Folders', 'All Folders', 'Unread Folders', etc., but they are all empty.

When I close out the terminal and try to reopen it denies acces the same way as mentioined above. Do I need to set some type of access permissions or?
