Ubuntu :: Hangs At DMI Pool Data?
Nov 26, 2010
I recently removed windows 7 from my computer and am now only using ubuntu. I used a live cd to grow the partition to use the new available space, but now the system just hangs at the Verifying DMI pool data section of bios. This is usually the first thing before grub loads.

I had Fedora11 (default layout) running on a separate hard drive (winXP on the other drive). After the FC drive failure I replaced the drive and did a fresh install again. This time I tried a custom layout to keep the /home on a separate partition. The installation went without a hitch, but on first boot the system hangs with "Verifying DMI Pool Data......"
XP boots fine though. Looks like grub doesn't get loaded. I can boot with the installation cd and get into recovery mode, everything seems fine on the fedora disk. Fdisk result:

I've recently tried to do a full install to a USB stick using a 10.04 cd.
2 things happen as I boot:
1. if Hdds are attached, boot hangs on "checking dmi pool data..."
2. if hdds not attached, "hdd error" scrolls across screen
boots normally w/o the usb stick. I've set up my partitions on usb stick as
1: fat32 2gb <<windows/storage
2: fat32 1.5gb << future persistent install
3: ext4 4gb << hoped-for full install
1 is the first partition so windows finds it nicely. Before install, i unplugged my hdds so that grub wouldn't get confused. I told the installer to put the full install on sda3 with no swap space. I checked (advanced button on summary page) that bootloader is being installed to the usb on dev/sda (sda since no other drives attached). This should put it in the MBR (i think?)
Seems like I pressed all the right buttons huh? Is there a way to diagnose grub and see what's wrong? is there a reason grub may not initialize properly from a usb drive?

I was dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 till recently. Then I had to reinstall Windows. After re-installation of Windows I did not try to restore Grub and deleted Ubuntu partitions on disk thinking that I'll install newer Natty version. But now when I try to install Ubuntu 11.04 using pen drive it gets stuck in bios showing message "Verifying DMI pool data ....". I also tried to boot GParted, memtest and Windows 7 with the same pen drive. Same thing occurred with GParted and memtest but Windows 7 installation did not stuck and went as usual. So I guess it's not hardware.

Problem : centos 5.3 hangs while remotely copying data onto this server.
I have A centos 5.3 x86 Version installed on Xeon Quad core , running on 8 GB DDR2 RAM, RAID 1 confgured on SATA drives. this was old installation copy and It has many more things running on it.Therfore, I can't just reinstall it.
I have setup SAMBA PDC + ldap on it. I encounter that system hangs when I copy data into this server from LAN computers.
My troubleshooting steps :
1. I have checked for network issue , My network works fine when I transfer data between other LAN compuers.
2. Even I have tried confguring seprate LAN....
3. I thought their might be some problem with my SAMBA configuration, therefore I did data transfer from sftp .

Adding several 2TB HDDs somehow crashed SATA controller on motherboard.Fedora will no longer boot.
I connected HDD (with Fedora OS) to another computer.Fedora gets past GRUB, but hangs before loading the splash screen. Is something wrong with GRUB settings?Previously, I had dual boot at GRUB (Fedora and WindowsXP).
What is the easiest way to get Fedora to boot properly on another system?I need access to those files.

I got this working before, but now I have a freshly installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I wanna play yahoo pool and I followed all those crazy insane commands they posted but they (java) didn't help at all, their support and help is really poor as I get errors like directory does not exist or no such file. I basically installed the jre-6u21-linux-i586.bin file in my home directory like and used all their commands like cd /home and all that. Here is my ls output they say always to check, but it seems like I installed it but I can't get it installed with firefox together.

I have a question regarding OpenVPN. I have configured my own vpn server. It is in a private network 192.168.0.0. The ip addresses I am using for the vpn connection are in the 10.9.1.0 network but I want to connect my ovpn clinets to the 192.168.0.0 network. I read the manuals and I think the "push route" command will work for me, but I cannot understand fully the description of the command "push route".
# Push routes to the client to allow it to reach other private subnets behind the server.
# Remember that these private subnets will also need to know to route the OpenVPN client
# Address pool (10.8.0.0/255.255.255.0) back to the OpenVPN server.
;push "route 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0"
;push "route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0"
So the questions:
1. These private subnets behind the server are routed from my vpn server or from another router
2. How these private subnets "know to route" the open vpn address pool, is this a configuration of the router for this networks (192.168.0.0)or ?

Sometime system wait during boot a long time on
Code: Select allrandom: nonblocking pool is initialized and Code: Select allPM: Starting manual resume from disk etc.
When everything is ok boot took around 20seconds. But when this problem occur it can take around 5 minutes. It occure during normal boot, but there are some information about resume from hibernation in log. But I didn't hibernate it. And hibernation doesn't work reliably so I removed uswsusp because I tried to fix hibernation with installing uswsusp first.
My laptop: MSI EX600X-033Sk (C2D T5250, Nvidia 8400g, It has firewire, usb2.0, ...)

I am managing a PBX which runs redhat enterprise linux. The time on it is always getting out of sync, which causes the time on the phones to display incorrectly. I can't figure out for the life of me why the time keeps changing. How can I set it to update it's time every day or two? I don't want to hit ntp.org every day, as is recommended. What's the recommended interval for connecting to the ntp pool? The kernel is Linux 2.6.9-67.0.4 (from uname -a)

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

I've been using Excel from OpenOffice with moderate success for the last year. Now I've just tried to open a new spreadsheet and I'm suddenly getting a highly condensed view. The cells are about 1mm X 4mm. If I expand them by selecting and dragging, then try to copy data from another spreadsheet onto the new one, the data shrinks to the small scale -- unreadable.

Is that possible without losing the data that is already on the data drive?Just want to make sure before I bought the 2 two drives. Not looking for instructions on how to do it,but if you want to include some that would be great too Just making sure it will work.

We purchased a new database system at work last October, ditching the old system because of a lack of support from the vendor. This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.
Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.
My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.

Where apart from ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail does kmail keep account data, such as login data/names of pop/smtp servers? I wanted to install an entirely clean version of kmail, so I uninstalled/re-installed kmail via YAST. I manually deleted ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail. After installing kmail I found that the account data of my Yahoo account were still listed in the kmail configuration panel. Shall I delete the Yahoo account within kmail prior to uninstalling the kmail package?

I have some data files that should be distributed with my program. Using dist_pkgdata_DATA in Makefile.am, I get these files installed to /usr/local/data/share/package-name. The problem is that data is read-only, and my program needs to modify it. Playing with dist_sharedstate_DATA, dist_localstate_DATA, dist-data_DATA varibles, I got different installation directories, like /usr/local/com, usr/local/var, but data is always read-only.
How can I distribute modifiable data files with my package? I need some common directory for all users, or maybe local data in a user directory.

For a given user on a given networked system, starting KDE (slackware 13.1 stock) hangs during the startup. CNTL+ALT+Fx gets out, and KDE / X can be shutdown with a CNTL+C, however, afterwards doing a df hangs bash.My guess is that there is something IO oriented, as top shows a load of 9+.
There is 5% iowait according to iostat.
