Ubuntu :: HP_RECOVERY Partition Is Hidden Despite Lack Of Flag?

Jan 9, 2010

Little explanation: OEM HP pcs come with an HP_RECOVERY partition which contains an installer which will wipe the HD and install vista (shivvers) Now despite how much I looooove vista, I was wondering why the OS_TOOLS partition shows up in places and recovery doesn't... especially cause niether have a hidden flag...

(As a side note, what the hell does OS_TOOLS do? google yields no answers)

Ubuntu :: Resize Partition Scheme Lack Of Knowledge The Cause?

Jan 26, 2011

I setup a dual boot system, with approximately 200gig planned for ubuntu 10.10. Based on the article here:[URL]..And this quote:

Quote:

# sda1 Recovery Partition, unchanged
# sda2 Windows partition, shrunk preferably from inside Windows, hopefully about 30Gb
# sda3 Primary Partition, 10Gb, file-system = ext3, in the Partitioning Section of the installer change the "Mount Point" = /

[Code]...

I assumed at that point that the "sda3" "/" would be for booting purposes. I would have to guess that I was wrong, because it is filling up very quickly. As you may be able to tell by the screen shot, "sda5", "/home" was what was assumed to be the file structure to store all of the programs and such.

I have only been running this setup for a week, and would expect to not be seeing my "boot" partition growing so quickly. Do I need to resize it? here do the standard programs that I get from the ubuntu software center install at (partition wise)? I suppose I dont mind wiping that section dry and starting over, but I would give a resize a try if possible.

Ubuntu Installation :: Delete The Partition With Flag Bootable?

Sep 6, 2010

Well I currently have a windows partition currently formatted as ext3 which has the partition flag bootable (It previously had Windows Vista on it). I also have a windows partition with NTFS filesystem with Windows 7 on it which is not bootable because the previously mentioned partition became formatted by me. And I also have more partitions for Ubuntu, which is currently the only OS working.

To show it visually: [URL]

So my question is can I delete the partition called "Inter" and recreate a new partition and format it again with ext3? It has the partition flag bootable, won't I loose all of the partitions this way? It's also the primary partition? Is there a big risk?

Ubuntu :: Win7 - Changed Partition Flag To Boot

Jun 2, 2011

I just installed windows 7 and ubuntu stopped booting even though it was still there, so I thought I would just change the partition flag to boot. I found out later that I had to create a new mbr but after I changed the boot flag, windows 7 stopped booting and I tried changing it back, but it didnt work. So I was wondering if i didn't use the correct flags or is there another way to get windows 7 to boot again? I was using GParted to change the partition flags and that i am using windows 7 ultimate 64bit

Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Hidden Partition And GRUB

Feb 18, 2010

I was installing Ubuntu on my new laptop (with plans to dual boot with Win 7) and, I'll admit, I did something stupid. You see, there was a 1 meg free space before the Windows 7 'hidden partition' and it was driving me nuts. So, what I did, was use gparted to move the hidden partition to the start of the drive (yes, a 1 meg move). Install of Ubuntu went off without a hitch, but after reboot things went a bit differently. The Recovery partition shows up as a possible boot partition in GRUB, in Windows 7 I can now see the recovery partition as a normal NTFS drive, and I can no longer use the features that the partition gives. I know this might be more of a 'ask on a Windows forum' question, but I was hoping someone else had done something like this and knew how to restore the hidden partition to being, well, hidden.

Hardware :: What Does Hidden Data Between MBR And A First Partition Mean

Sep 1, 2010

I have SATA Western Digital 120GB 5 yeras old hard drive. There are four primary partitions. In order FAT-32, JFS, EXT4 and the last SWAP. Yesterday I copied the third ext4 partition with Clonezilla. Everything was OK. But Clonezilla issued therey strange for me message (and upsetting): "Hidden data between MBR and first partition" It was about 32KB. Clonezilla copied this hidden part as well as MBR. Clonezilla sugested that these hidden data may be used for some technical reasons. Now my questions:

1. What does it mean hidden? I partitioned disk with GNU fdisk.
2. Where they may come from these hidden data?
3. Should I be aware of them? Is it possible this is a some kind of hardware virus?
4. How to clean disk?

Ubuntu Installation :: Separate Boot Partition - Doesn't Care About The Boot Flag On The Disk

Feb 14, 2010

GNU GRUB 0.97
Ubuntu 8.04.4
2.6.24-26

Added an SSD (dev/sdc) and decided to move some less often changed directories there. Started with /usr and /boot, leaving / on a primary in the first drive, for now. All started ok, and my changed fstab mounted the right ones, and the system works.

However, grub is actually using the original /boot on / on sda1. I cannot see any way to change this. (Which makes it sorta hard to update the kernel

From grub:

Okay, since it has two choices, I tried to tell it which one to use. But, grub> root (hd2,5) does nothing.

Disk /dev/sda:

what I seem to recall, grub doesn't care about the boot flag on the disk. Nor does it care about primary vs. logical (except GNU doc says "makeactive" only works on a primary?).

The GNU doc also indicates that it looks for a directory /boot on the partition, so if you're mounting a partition as /boot, it also needs to contain a /boot directory under it. Tried that, but no change.

Is my problem the logical partition? Does that prevent "grub> root" from changing it? I'm afraid to wipe out the old /boot and find that I can't start up.

Right now I only have Windows 7 64bit installed. I'd like to keep it installed and have a hidden Truecrypt system partition that holds Ubuntu. I've installed Ubuntu once before, but it was a while ago so I don't remember the details. Also, I'm not entirely sure how to work Truecrypt as I've never used it before. Do I install Ubuntu first and then run Truecrypt, if so, how do I deal with the fact that installing Ubuntu involves many partitions. Does Truecrypt recognize this automatically or do I have to somehow encrypt them all?

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot - Acer Laptop Hidden Recovery Partition

Aug 17, 2010

I just got a new acer laptop that came loaded with Win 7, and I want to dual boot with Ubuntu. Naturally the laptop didn't come with a Win 7 disc, but instead has the stupid recovery partition. I've made the recovery DVDs from the eRecovery program but....

From what I read the acer recovery setup is extremely picky and will refuse to work after the partitions have been messed with. Apparently the ALT+F10 to start the recovery process on boot won't even work if acer's MBR is overwritten. What's worse, even the recovery DVDs won't work without the MBR! (At least from what I've been reading... I guess if you install a different HD you are SOL) So how does one get around this? I couldn't care less about acer's stupid recovery partition, but if I ever need to send the computer in for service I think they actually charge extra to restore their crap.

OpenSUSE Install :: Mounting Hidden Recovery Partition

I surely installed linux (now on opensuse 11.4) as quickly as possible. mounting this hidden recovery partition under linux? All I can see is this from "fdisk -l"printout:

Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders, total 234441648 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x34fe34fd
[Code]....

I assume that the partition in question is between blocks 0 and 2047?

Ubuntu Security :: Black Hats - 105GB FAT16 Hidden Partition On Hard Drive

Mar 31, 2010

Since August of 2009 I have been under attack by corporate Black Hats. I found a 105GB FAT16 Hidden partition on my hard drive. Seventy four percent full (78GB). What led me to this was the fact that I couldn't help but notice that my Internet connection was a revolving door that never stopped spinning. So I went looking for why.

I removed the hidden flag, and patched the partition, but couldn't open that thing no matter what I did. I tried for a month. The attacks started as soon as I stopped these guys from accessing that data. At this point we are 9 months into 24/7 attacks. I have interviewed with the FBI, and local law enforcement, but they are intent on making me out to be a conspiracy nut. I am not at all. All they wanted to do is quiz me on my computer skills. If I managed to draw the attention of a corporate security group they killed it.

I am a US Navy trained Electronics Technician. 58 years old with ECM experience. I have been doing both bench, and field service on all manner of electronics for 40 years. My last job was supporting field engineers, and technicians for Samsung Electronics of America. The attacks have spread to my mother, and best friend. My phones are bugged internally at the phone company, and my modem has had its firmware altered to call them. They run around inside my ISP like they own the place.

Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Shrunk - "hidden" Partition Might Be Recovered?

Mar 10, 2011

I decided to swap my existing small hard drive for a bigger one which went well. Then I formatted the old drive using a windows vista machine before putting it on my spares shelf. To my amazement after formatting my 20GB hard drive had become an 8GB hard drive. I fear the worst but remember that Ubuntu put a large swap file on the drive and wonder if Vista has just ignored the system partition. I tried attaching it to my Ubuntu laptop which reports a healthy 8GB hard drive even after formatting again. I don't know enough about Ubuntu to try repartitioning it in that so I tried DSKCHK in windows which reported a healthy 8 GB hard drive. Is all hope lost or is it a "hidden" partition which might be recovered under Ubuntu? If so, how?

I came up on RedHat. While I thoroughly embrace Ubuntu now, I miss the concept of runlevels. I installed all my CentOS servers with Gnome as a convenience on tap when needed. Ubuntu One :: SubAir Does Not Work Due To Lack Of SSL Support

Jun 24, 2011

It's a long long story how I got to this point but I'll save that for later. Ubuntu says subAir does not work due to lack of SSL support. That's only one reason why it doesn't work. I've gotten past that and a few more issues. Here is what I've done: Used stunnel to get around the SSL issue.stunnel -c -f -d 127.0.0.1:8080 -r streaming.one.ubuntu.com:443

subAir still will not work and return a 403 because it wants to do a GET /I got around that two ways. One was a reverse squid proxy and another was an Apache proxy. Ok, now we're cooking. Except now subAir is sending POST data to the subsonic server and ubuntu's version does not seem to like that. Try it yourself

curl -d "c=myapp" https://streaming.one.ubuntu.com/rest/getIndexes.view -v
curl https://streaming.one.ubuntu.com/res...s.view?c=myapp -v

sigh.... so here I am thinking about writing a POST to GET 'thing' or maybe we can get some more info on how ubuntu's subsonic api works.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Digital Media Connection ( Well, Lack Of )?

Jan 18, 2010

I've trolled the forums for about 30 mins or so already looking this up, but can't seem to find any solutions. Most threads seem to end with either a "report to launchpad" or they just end without resolution. So in case I've missed a solved thread:

Plugging my Kodak C503 in gives inability to mount due to lock issues, the infamous -60 lockout. However, I get TWO icons in metacity, neither are mounted/will mount. Turning the cam off removes both, and I can't get down to only one. Not sure if this is because it's reading the camera's internal memory + my SD card.

So, I pulled the SD card out, and jacked it into my card reader in my lappy. no dice. In fact, none of my SD cards work; leading me to believe I need to find drivers for it.

Notes: (1)It's a Pavillion ZD7000 (2)nothing pops up in fdisk (3)I really don't want to load up windows

Ubuntu :: Mysterious Lack Of Connectivity After Server Reboot?

Jun 23, 2010

Every time I reboot my server, it no longer connects to the internet. It is dual-homed with an internal and an external interface. Both come up. The internal connection works fine. Nothing happens on the external interface. Ifconfig shows that both interfaces are setup correctly. My iptables settings are properly restored. Forwarding is automatically enabled. For some reason packets do not go anywhere on the external interface. This has been true ever since the upgrade to jaunty I think (now running lucid).

Once I restart the external interface it works perfectly (eg ifdown eth1; ifup eth1 or /etc/init.d/networking restart). The problem only occurs after a reboot and only occurs on the external interface.

Here's my /etc/network/interfaces file:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static

Ubuntu Installation :: Partitioner Lack Slide Control?

Jul 17, 2010

i remember back a few years ago you could partition the drive by simply sliding a slider, and now trying to install ubuntu next to xp my dad was unable to set it up. This is a big step back for the design of the partitioner. He was able to set up ubuntu 7.04 on his old computer many years ago when i was not there. He tried to set up 10.04 today and got so frustrated with ubuntu wanting to take most of his drive, that he gave up. why was the "simple slide to set space you where going to give ubuntu" taken away. he just wants to set up the space he didn't want to deal with root, swap space, and so on. he just wanted to set up a block of space that ubuntu can use however it wants. but the partitioner will not let him. this needs to be fixed. the install process must be simple to use by everyone. i do not want my friends and family getting frustrated with installing it. he was excited to try the new ubuntu till he got to dealing with the partitioner and after that he wanted nothing to do with ubuntu. the installer is the first thing they see make that the primary focus of "easy of use".

Fedora :: Yum Complaining About Lack Of Space On /boot?

Jan 20, 2010

I've been trying to run a simple `yum update` for the last couple weeks, but it barfs before it finishes every time. For every single package it will say something similar to "('installing package libdrm-2.4.17-1.fc12.i686 needs 208KB on the /boot filesystem', (9, '/boot', 212992L))"

Here's an example of the output:

Code:
Running rpm_check_debug
Running Transaction Test
Finished Transaction Test
Transaction Test Succeeded

[Code]...

This is a machine that I recently put through several upgrades: Fedora 9-> Fedora 10 -> Fedora 12. The computer has been working well for the most part, with some minor bugs here and there. Yum updates were working just fine until this popped up.
