OpenSUSE Install :: Garbage Display Before And After Login On Laptop?
Dec 8, 2009
Am running OpenSuSE 11.1 / KDE 3.5 on an Acer Aspire 4730Z laptop. Garbage is displayed on the screen just before and just after the login screen. The garbage sometimes includes vestiges of the taskbar. Suspect some video buffer is not being correctly initialized.

i installed opensuse 11.4 on my laptop (Lenovo T60, Mobility Radeon X1400). It worked fine for some weeks, the first problem that I found was that libreoffice did not work. Calc crashed immediately (screen looked "destroyed", only the panel was really visible, but the system seemed to work so I could log out without alt+ctr+del), writer had the problem after opening some menu options. Now (one week later) after start and login I could not see the panels anymore, I could start programs but those would not be displayed, I only saw the desktop. After restarting, I cannot even log in anymore, the screen looks destroyed as with libreoffice. I created a new user, this works and this is from where I write.

This is the 2nd time this has happened. I installed 11.1 & 11.2 later. After the install I would get the login screen just fine and then when it starts running everything goes white. It is an issue with compiz and my graphics I assume. The interesting part is in opensuse 11.0 I had all compiz items not installed. When I installed 11.1 & 11.2 they reinstalled. For next time is there a way to not have these installed on the install? What I had to do was login in a different session other than Gnome. Then go into yast and remove compiz. Then logout and log back in with gnome and the white screen is gone.

I am not sure if anyone here has any experience with Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Linux but my problem relates to that product.
I am running 11.2 openSUSE and after installing the latest version of the Kaspersky product in question, I went ahead and restarted the machine. At the logon screen, when clicking my user name to log in, the password box would not display.
I tried clicking on the other option and trying it that way and after putting my name in the username box, the machine just started thinking and thinking and nothing happens.
I also tried logging in through terminal service but it would not recognize my password to be correct.
I really need to log into my username since I have important files on that Linux partition. I tried mounting this partition in Windows since I have a dual boot setup but I can only view the folders of the partition and not the contents.

I am having trouble getting my Dell M6400 laptop display to be cloned with the Hyundai LCD display I have connected to my docking station.
I have an Nvidia Quadro FX 2700M graphics card and have installed the proprietary driver according to SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE. I have tried using sax2 (found out today it is depreciated so will stop that) and running nvidia-xconfig from both init 3 and init 5 followed by nvidia-settings to setup cloning mode.
When I run nvidia-settings, it doesn't detect the laptop display it seems. It says the max resolution is 640x480 even though the max is 1920x1200 and this does get used if I boot the laptop without a monitor attached.
Also, when I try and select cloning nvidia-settings crashes with a segmentation fault.
openSUSE 11.2.

I'd like to solve a little problem that I have connecting my notebook with an external VGA monitor.Everything seems to work fine, but when I close the laptop monitor, also the external monitor shuts down.I've tried to find different energy-saving setting for laptop display and external monitor. with no luck...My video card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. On the ATI website there is no catalist control center for linux. (It would be very useful). So, for now, I can only use the display options on the panel.

if I open Yast2 via SSH I see the garbage (code page related issue; similar to this). If I set some other than UTF-8 in PuTTY (KOI8-U, iso-8859 etc) Yast looks good, but then the same problem appears with Midnight Commander. How can I have Yast to use 'right' UTF-8 instead of any legacy code pages? Or how better deal with the situation?

I have downloaded the latest testing image today (debian-testing-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso), install went just fine.
On boot, I get as far as the KDE login screen, where my user and password are seemingly accepted. Seemingly, as after this point, the screen is a complete mess. This 'mess' differs between attempts: it could be full of black and white squares, themselves made up of noise pixels; once it was like a normal screen after it had been through a blender, i.e. bits of the DE but awfully mixed up. (My judgement would be that the video pointers is set to point at the wrong part of memory... or is that my old-school point of view getting in the way? Whichever, it provides you with an idea of what it looks like.)
Running on an Nvidia GTS250 card, with two monitors (2 x DVI).
I have not installed any NV propriety drivers, as this is the first boot(s).
There is no xorg.conf present on the system; and I cannot find anything obvious in xorg.log (but then, I wouldn't know what to look for).
I use grub legacy, from my existing PCLOS partition (though this should not be an issue as I get as far as the KDE login screen, pretty as please).
Regarding the install itself, I took the above mentioned testing image as a way to get Squeeze. I assume this was the right way to do this at current time.

i installed 11.3 with kde on my wife's computer a couple of months ago, and i am slowly trying to fix the holes in the installation. things that she "can't live without". now i am working on flash. videos and other flash videos in the browser are all jerky, with very poor playback quality as a result. the playback skips forward a couple seconds, then pauses. this appears to be exactly like a bandwidth issue - but it is not. bandwidth is fine, and allowing the vid to download completely before playing makes no difference. i uninstalled all flash stuff, then reinstalled from a standard repo selection that included packman. pretty much oldcpu's recommended list of repos. no change. i've spent hours searching and reading threads, trying to find a gold nugget. one said delete ~/.macromedia and ~/.adobe. did that. no change.
update everything. no change. reboot. no change. somebody mentioned he was having a firefox specific issue with similar symptoms. i try chrome. no change. some ppl seem to connect flash misbehavior with vid driver issues. this box has an ati onboard gpu - ati radeon xpress 200. so i spend some time looking through some threads i turned up regarding updating that - but this leads me to more searching and no answers. i don't know how to tell what driver i have installed for ati, i don't know how to find the kernel config file to see if ati has been built in, and more.

My OpenSUSE 11.2 is working fine as samba server, no problems, but I have a problem with KDM.My default init runlevel is set to 5 and every time I try to login at KDM (KDE4), the monitor goes black and returns to the login screen. If I hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to console and start /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon manually, press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to return to KDM login, everything is fine. What do I have to do to fix this issue?

been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile
any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.

i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.

The graphical login screen is loaded just fine. Though very shortly after (a moment after the loading screen could be seen) it crashes back to the graphical login. And that happens no matter what wm I'm trying - gnome, kde3, kde4, e16, e17, even twm.
It happened after the logout after a zypper up yesterday morning. Looking through the list of what packages were upgraded (two machines, both last zypper up'ed last Sunday, checked on the second one after the problem with the first one), the only packages which might be responsible are kwin or qt4.
The graphics card seems to be fine (NVidia 9600), as it happens whether or not I use nv or the propietary driver. Also tried reinstalling it from the repo as well as using the binary blob from NVidia. Has been tested on Windows and games are running fine there, so it shouldn't be the card.
What is strange, is that when calling upon sax2 -r from runlevel three, the initial screen loads nicely, but sax2 crashes back to the cli once one presses 'Change Configuration'. No error messages are being printed.
Any pointers on how I can narrow down the cause (and get it fixed)?
Packages:
OpenSuSE 11.2 + KDE 4 factory & enlightenment & qt 4.6 repos
X.Org 7.4-35.3
Kwin 4.3.98-406.6
libqt4 4.6.1+4.6.20100202-1.1
[Code]....

The company im working at is planning to sell some of the old lappy One of them is this pentium3 laptop (for only 20 bucks DD)
the specs are:
pentium 3 1.1ghz
640MB ram
28GB hdd
wifi
Im wondering that if this machine is sufficient to run linux as a server I dont plan to use it for anything big just among me and a few friends Also, I dont rlly need any Desktop Environment as I can just ssh to this machine from my other laptops if I need to do any work on it.
Hence, my questions are as follows:
1. is this machine sufficient to run linux as a web/file server for me and a few friends?
2. also, is it okay to rlly run this laptop 24/7? (its a rlly old laptop after all)
3. lastly, altho I prefer using opensuse, but if I dont need any DE at all, would Arch be a better solution? (Its known to be very small and light)

I am using an HCL k38 pdc laptop and I am unable to boot KDE live cd of opensuse 11.4. The system boots to a graphical screen where a progress bar is shown. the progress bar proceeds to about 90% and then my system hangs. ALl I can see on my screen is that graphical image with suse logo and progress bar. Though my mouse works and I can move it all around the desktop but if I try pressing any key (CAPS/NUM LOCK/SCROLL LOCK) i dont see any LED notification for that. this concludes that the system is hanged.
Key board has no issue as I can use it in Windows.
I tried to boot the lice cd in text mode and it worked very fine from there I installed the system on to my HDD in dual boot mode with windows XP. But after installation when I boot opensuse from HDD it stucks at the same position.
I think this issue is with Nvidea graphics card as when the system boots I see an error message that says that the RAM has an address conflict with VGA ROM.
How can I use opensuse. I have even tried ubuntu 10.10 but it also hangs while booting or after booting. So far I have been able to manage only Sabayon Linux working on this machine however the ubuntu 9.10 was working on this system and it also started behaving similarly after I upgraded it to ubuntu 10.04.

I have been with opensuse from 10, and I currently run 11.3 on my desktops. My attempt to install 11.4 failed. It produced a display with many tiny rectangles instead of a gui. I guess there is a discrepancy between the times produced by the x and the y display drivers and the times expected by the display hardware. I can't blame it on the display hardware, though, because I switched to another monitor and got the same error. I did the usual tests from the install screen, and there are no errors. If I run the program in fail-safe mode, the display is text only. In this case there is no x-server. I have not observed that in 11.3 fail-safe.

system will not display (screen is black). I did disable the nouveau driver (I think) and I do have Nvidia graphics card.Messages:
1) Starting Avahi daemon - error while loading shared libraries: libavahi-corre.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
2) Starting smartd /user/sbin/smartd: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6
3) Starting Firewall Initialization (phase 2 of 2)... error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6
Can you please help me figure out what I need to do to get the display? I really appreciate it! If not, I can do a clean install of 11.4, I think.

For starters, I have a Dell E1505/6400.I had Win XP but it crashed my hard drive, so I installed Ubuntu. After that install, I decided I wanted to change to OpenSuse, so I downloaded the 4.6 Gig .iso file. Downloaded fine, and I burned in ImgBurn...no problems with it. So I popped the DVD into my laptop, hit F12 so I could boot from DVD drive, but the DVD isn't recognized. It goes straight into Ubuntu, and when Ubuntu starts up, it shows up as a blank DVD+R. (That was the 2nd time I burned it, the 1st DVD I burned had the same results.)

I'm trying to install OpenSuse 11.2 64bit on my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop. This is the Intel i7 processor with 8 Gb of RAM and Nvidia NVS 3100M graphics. I can boot from my 64bit installer LiveCD for KDE, but once I choose Install, after the first selection screen where I can change the default video at the bottom, I just get the openSUSE symbol and it hangs. I have tried all of the options at the first page for video setting or Kernel setting, My system specifications are as follows:
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 Q 720 @ 1.60GHz RAM: 4GB DDR3 Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce GT 230M, 1024 MB Dedicated video memory. I should mention that I have currently a dual-boot OS, i.e. Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. I also checked the burnt CD on another machine and the CD worked. So the problem is not because of the CD. I can't find any info on installing Suse on this notebook.

My default display (DF-770 monitor) comes up something like 1280x960. In the "configure desktop" > display I set the display to 1152x864@75Hz. Next I accept the setting after the preview. When I reboot, the display is back to 1280. Do I have to manually edit some file to make my selection permanent?
Sysconfig editor has a variable that starts off with 1024x768, but that doesn't seem to be my problem, so I didn't mess with it. How do I get my display preferences saved?

Continuing with my 11.3 install on an old Toshiba Tecra M1 laptop:
When i was installing, i had the options of 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768 etc.
I chose the 1024x768, because it fit the laptop screen perfectly.
But after the installation, the highest resolution i get is 800x600, and it's wasting a bunch of real estate on the screen.
I mean, if during installation it could do 1024x768, why not after the install? obviously the graphics card supported it.

Installed 11.3 KDE today on an old Vaio desktop we were given (Duron 900Mhz, 512mb, 40Gb HD, SiS630 onboard video, Trinitron 15" monitor). Everything works fine except it will not save the 800x600 resolution setting. Every time I reboot it is back to 1280x1024 which it thinks is the default resolution. Any tweak to get 11.3 to save that setting?
