I'm just wondering because I'm going to to test out just how many partitions I can make and mount on GPT. Is there a theoretical limit on the amount of partitions or mounts allowed? I was thinking there would be depending on if you were running i386 or x86_64 because both can only handle up to a certain interger.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Laptop has Ubuntu 9.04 and I am using it for the past one year. I have four partitions. Gparted Screen Shot attached.
/dev/sda5 was mounted as "Laptop 2"
/dev/sda6 was mounted as "Laptop 3"
But from today morning I was not able to access any of the files from my hard disk. When I press the "Computer" Menu Item from the "Places" menu I could access all the files on my hard disk. It shows an error message attached with this thread. The system boots perfectly and work perfectly. "Laptop 2" and "Laptop 3" disappeared.
I searched the net and found ways to mount the Partitions with these following commands.
sudo nano /etc/fstab

Is there any way I could use "Laptop 2" and "Laptop 3" as my mount points as it was earlier.
Does anybody know how to have partitions (not removable media) auto-mounted at boot?It would be great so I do not have to click them for first use.By the way, may it be pre-configured in ubuntu to do that for everyone?
View 1 Replies View RelatedCreated partitions, some of them LVM, in a server, say A. Did the same for another server, B, but created one more LVM partition.
Installed RHEL in A, and some other applications. Made dump files for each partition of A and restored all of them them in B. No error in that process, except B wouldn't boot. Did chroot /mnt/sysimage and grub-install /dev/sda--still no good. B came to a halt with GRUB> dispalyed. <tried many things many times.. searching Googles..but w/o luck) Gave up, and restored the bootloader part using OS CD -- I say restored because now B boots ok and I can see application that I had installed in A. So far so good.
Problem: that extra LVM partition is missing! I did not knowingly overwrite it, so where did it go? Somebody is keeping it from being displayed!
Is it the grub.conf that tells the OS what to mount and what not to? If yes, problem is , grub.conf is missing in B. In A, it is in /boot/grub/. df -kh shows other partions (some of them LVM) just fine.. what is going on?
I tracked a file called menu.lst in a strange place, in /usr/share/doc/grub-0.97.. but I didn't see any entry that loads partitions.

* Prevent the sdb1 + sdb2 ext4 partitions from being shown in Nautilus/Thunar Places sidebar.
* Prevent the Western Digital SmartWare VirtualCD, sdr1, from being shown in Nautilus/Thunar Places sidebar. It is just a VCD that is part of the firmware of the external (sdb) hard drive. *GAG!*
I don't care if they are mounted or not, though I prefer if they aren't. As long as they don't show up on the Places sidebar AT ALL, I'll be happy. I never use them, but keep mounting them by accident.
Here's my fstab, can you tell me why it's not doing the above?

i reinstalled opensuse yesterday.when i turn on my system every time i need to enter my root password to mount my partitons.please see the following image.i want to automount all partitions on startup without giving root password(before reinstalling opensuse it didn't ask root password to mount my partitions)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using direct mounts because I like being able to cd to the directory and use tab completion..versus indirect mounts where you can not do that since the directories are virtual.But, why does the /proc/mounts show these directories mounted(I have not cd to them)? Are they technically mounted? The reason why I use automount is because if I ever have power failures at least not all filesystems that are not being used will be unmounted and not corrupted.

The process to mount partitions seems to be happening before the service /etc/init.d/lvm2 is started. I can get it mounted using "mount -a" command, but not during the boot time. What should I do get it automatically mounted on every boot?

Is there a way to do both at the same time? Ideally what I'd like to see is the output of fdisk -l but with an additional column that shows if a partition is mounted or not.

My configuration is with a 3 hard disk system.
disk1 (Debian)
disk2 (XP and Fedora)
Disk3 (W7 and a Data partition)
When I boot and log in, all partitions for disk2 and disk3 are mounted read-write. Only by going to command line am I able to unmount the drives with the following sequence
cd /media
umount *
umount *
I should be able to mount and umount a drive by providing or responding to a root password. But I am not given the option to present a password. My request is blocked.
I also do not want to see the drives remounted after a boot. I tried to find out how this was managed, but I was unable to discover the module and it's parameter list that controls or does this task.
I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago.After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? And it comes and goes with the cpu usage. cpu1 will run at like 9 or 10 percent idle while cpu2 will run at 100 percent all the time. I am not sure whats going on. But id hate to have to start from scratch again begins I just got it set up the way i want it. And the network activity keeps having spikes when I am not online. I've scanned with multiple port scanners and nothing seems out of the norm.
When I installed Ubuntu(with W.U.B.I) it gave a set amount of space, unfortunately I have come near the end of the set 15GB's I was just wondering if there was a way to increase the amount of space ubuntu can use

View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried to install Portable VirtualBox using wine and even though I installed it on my /host/ folder (with 19 gb free) it downloaded some massive file on my Wubi installation (with 60 mb free) and now I am down to 3 mb left on Wubi and I can't find the massive file that it downloaded. Tried using the disk usage analyzer but nothing came up. Windows is unbootable so I can't use it.
Before this, Ubuntu would constantly decrease the amount of disk space I had free for no reason as well. It would jump from 120 mb one day to 50 mb.I moved my documents to my Windows folders but the disk space only stayed at 100 for another day or so before it went down again. apt-get auto/clean, localepurge, and deborphan are completely useless and there's something else going on behind the scenes here that I don't know about.Using Ubuntu Jaunty.
Most nights I fall asleep watching tv or movies. I want the computer to go to sleep after I do. Under Power Management Properties I have "put computer to sleep when inactive for 1:00" yes - to " spin down hard disks" and "put display to sleep when inactive for 1:00"
I'd say 65% of the time I wake up and the computer is running, not suspended, and 45% of the time the monitor is still on. Over the past 8 months or so I have been trying different media players. I tend to have the same problem of the computer not sleeping with all of them. (Banshee, Miro, xbmc, boxee, vlc, totem, )
1. Is there a process I can look for that may be running some of the time that would hinder the suspend function?
2. Is there a simple script I can write for "suspend in 90 minutes"
3. I think I remember seeing way to do this from the CLI with pm-suspend, yeah?

i have about 2 TB of 700mb avi files as data on disc want to spread it across two 2TB ext usb drives (sata 3.5 inside the housing) obviously i have to rip them to the laptop and then move to the ext hdd (omg laborious little task) am i better doing the ripping in meerkat or in a windows machine? files need to be accessible by W7, XP, and meerkat to vlc player. what should i format the discs to?
