Ubuntu :: Setting Up/installing 2 Different Firefox Browsers?
May 28, 2011so I'm trying to run an extension for firefox that is no longer handled with firefox 4.0+. I've googled that you can run two different versions of firefox on the same system, but you have to have them set up as two different profiles. Basically having the two different browsers set up in two different locations running there own things from different files, etc.
How can I go about setting up an older version of firefox in a different location, instead of just running the setup in general which would conflict with my newer version?
I know it can be done, but a simple sudo apt-get install firefox (version x.x) will basically override my newer version I would imagine. I've already found where to get the older versions file and everything, I just don't want to mess up my new version
Can someone please help me as to how to install this in another location not affecting my current version? I also understand that I will have to have another command to run this older version, so maybe if you could shed some light on how to set up the new command also,

Fedora :: Poor Picture Quality In Firefox And Other Browsers?
Jun 18, 2010After taking a first look onto internet under Fedora linux (using Firefox web browser) I've saw that every single image is displayer much much worse than in same Firefox under Windows. Especially when scaling, it became pixelized, but even without scaling it is smoothen very much. I've checked Konqueror but quality is bad too and the same as in Firefox. What could be the reason and how could I fix it?
BTW, everything in linux GUI looks a little worse, including font, etc, looks smooth. Images under IrfanView too, but not as bad as in browsers. Proprietary Nvidia driver from RPMfusion is installed and 3D works. But running Fedora under VirtualBox in Windows produce same bad quality as in native Fedora.
Software :: Firefox-all Mozilla Browsers Still Way Slower In Native Vs Wine And/or Windows?
Aug 28, 2010Just read a post on this page (scroll down about half way) and it seems like all mozilla based browsers are still slower in linux vs wine and/or windows! [URL]...I thought after almost two years this would've been fixed (there's been earlier reports besides the link I gave above). Heck I thought it would be a problem with a specific version release and/or releases? I think this is a bit ridiculous after this long and I'm almost wondering if it's been around longer than 2 years when anyone even cared to take notice! Oh and did I already mention that compiling it doesn't make a difference? You probly knew that already. I'm running bleeding edge Gentoo with window maker (march=prescott sse sse2 sse3 mmx mmxext blah use flags and cflags) and Slackware 13.1 (alot of stuff compiled and/or recompiled from source-optimized with same flags as gentoo and even more flags (and less package features) when things are stable and ok. Yes compiling is pain on a overclocked Celeron D lol. Well not too painful
Thanks to google-chromium and/or chrome we don't have to worry about speed issues but come-on this is almost sick! Firefox windows via wine way faster than a native linux build? WTF... That's like almost embarrassing. Has anyone found anything to resolve this issue. Perhaps it's a simple yet overlooked setting that no one bothers with?
To that link above one of the posters mentioned it's the DNS cache setting that fixes the speed issue, but then others posted back saying it doesn't resolve this issue so obviously that's not the case. There's definately a flaw with the mozilla code under linux since even epiphany (which is very lightweight in comparison to regular firefox) suffers performance issues as well as others.
It's a bit upsetting I.M.O. (in my opinion! lolz) that this issue isn't resolved yet after all this time? I mean common. What about people who have no choice but to use Firefox. I have to use firefox by force when I play QuakeLive! (the plugin is not made for any other linux browser).
Even besides that point. Mozilla was made in the first place to be light weight, fast and secure vs internet explorer. It has severely changed since then (remember when it was the only tabbed browser available? It was sweet back then!). Now it just seems bloated and awful. Thankfully not terribly awful on Windows but compared to Google-Chrome (especially Safari which is MacOS only but still) it gets smoked in terms of speed, memory use and simplicity. At least not as bad as Internet Explorer (lol @ internet explorer. OMG the slowzyynessz and heeuuchggeneesszz).
So yeah being an open source browser and running terribly on an open source O.S. vs a closed source one. What's gonna' happen? Has this already been mentioned and fixed somewhere that I never looked or is it completely hopeless and just better not to use it for those of us that are bothered by it.
Ubuntu :: Web Browsers Using Too Much Cpu
Sep 23, 2010I have carmic installed in dell laptop with 2.7 ghz celeron processor. CPU usage after startup is between 20-30 %. After I start ANY web browser (firefox,chrome,opera,midori,galeon) CPU is used above 90%. It's the same on any web site,without flash player. Browsers are using at least 60% CPU. Everything else is ok. It was the same case with 9.04 installed in past.

Jul 26, 2010Everything looked great until I installed and then uninstalled Kubuntu desktop. Now the fonts in Chrome and Firefox look, imho, "bad". I installed the msttcorefonts but there is no difference. I've attached a screenshot, which illustrates the problem. It looks to me like the bold is too bold and the normal type is too thin and not spaced correctly.

May 7, 2011i've got an annoying problem. on a regular basis my browsers keep crashing out on various websites. videos, newgrounds, etc. one moment i'm doing something, the next thing, it just froze. firefox 4, opera 11.10 and chrome 11. each crash is different, but they crash never the less. firefox freezes and when i try to close it, the whole screen turns to a blank light blue. after a moment a message pops up to allow it to be forcefully terminated. opera is similar. chrome is different. you just cannot shut it down for quite some time. i'm guessing it has something to do with flash, but i'm already running the latest version with the help of flash-aid.

Jul 31, 2011I am still in progress of testing 11.04 on my HP probook 6550b. This is basically rather current and standard intel based notebook with M520/2.4ghz and intel HD graphic i5. 11.04 runs on it either with unity or classic, but regardless of which gui I use, browsers do crash all the time. Tried firefox with default extensions, then seamonkey and then chromium. Nothing works really. I am not able to run any search in this forum for example, this will make any of the browsers crash. The kernels I tried are standard 32bit as well as -pae variety. Everything seemed to be more stable on real 64bit ubuntu, but number of software does not work here, so not real alternative. Any experience with browsers permanently crashing on 11.04? Example of crash readout of the firefox:

Ubuntu :: No Sound In Browsers?
Aug 1, 2011So I have no sound in my browsers. Firefox 5.0, Chromium 12 and Chrome 12.
Originally I was thinking it was just in Flash player. So I found lots of articles, and tried their suggestions and none of them did anything (things like linking (ln) plugins from one to another, reconfiguring flash, running browsers in sudo, etc).
Then I thought I'd check if html5 sites gave me sound. And they don't. I can't get sound in any way in my browsers.
I have perfect sound in other programs though, notifications, music, etc all work fine.
I have no idea how to diagnose this any further. I've already tried half a dozen "fixes" others have put up out there, and nothing is working.
Ubuntu :: Java Applets Won't Run In Browsers
Mar 6, 2010I am using Ubuntu 8.10. All the java programs run perfectly fine in Geany. But when I try to run java applets in web browsers it did not run. I have tried running it in Opera and FireFox. I have written a simple program which display "hello world" in browsers. When I refresh the page it displays the text for about 2 or 3 seconds and after that it disappears.
Are there any other ways to run java applets?

May 3, 2010After Installing 10.04, I've noticed that web browsers seem to be ignoring the font rendering settings set for the ui (System>Preferences>Appearance>Fonts).So far I've tried Firefox, Chromium and Opera, and text renders equally blurry in all of them. Changing from one rendering method to another has an effect on menu bars etc, but doesn't change how text appears inside of a browser, for better or worse.

May 9, 2010upgraded to 10.4 on many web pages, when I click on a button, nothing happens. If I hover over the button, the cursor turns to a pointing hand but that's it.
I've tried firefox, cromium, epiphany and arora, they're all the same. I think it's just on flash content, some things work, some don't and I cant tell the difference between them. Tried install flash again and tried gnash which I couldnt get to appear in the pluggins list.
Ubuntu :: Browsers Only Showing The Text?
Sep 15, 2010I have a problem with my web browsers showing only text on some web pages. In the Firefox error console, I see the following errors:
1. Error: The stylesheet was not loaded because its MIME type, "text/html", is not "text/css".
2. Bootloader is not defined
3. BigPipe is not defined.
Any browser I use has the same sort of results. If I use WindowsXP, however, everything seems to work fine.
Ubuntu :: Browsers Keep Going Back Page
Oct 3, 2010I've been using ubuntu on my PC for a few months now. Really love it, so decided to install it on my wife's PC too (she, also, loves it!). Only problem is that (and I've tried reinstalling it twice now) the browsers on her PC keep going "back a page" after a few seconds of bringing up any web page. We used the WUBI installer to install the OS. Weird thing is that this happens in both firefox and chromium (I thought it was a firefox bug at first but as it's happening in both browsers I'm thinking it's something else). I am a total Ubuntu newbie myself too, but I love the OS and really want to find a way to work on this other PC.

I *do* have sound with Rhythmbox or when playing games, eg bzflag.
I have tried removing firefox and downloading the tarball version from Mozilla. I have tried running firefox as root. I have upgraded to the latest firefox and latest flash.

Mar 27, 2011i am using 64-bit ubuntu 10.04 and recently upgraded my drivers to catalyst 11.2 (ati mobility radeon 5470). lately my flash has been crashing constantly, to the point where i've uninstalled it so i can use the internet. the browser eventually recovers on websites like facebook and the worst culprit, gmail (videos is hopeless), and does so immediately if i "killall npviewer.bin" - firefox will go unresponsive for about 30 seconds then recover, and depending on the website it will go unresponsive again - on gmail this only takes a few seconds. it happens in firefox, epiphany, and chromium. i think this problem looks familiar and there was some fix by editing a text file somewhere, but i can't find that problem i remember anymore so i can't check.

Mar 18, 2010I'm running mac osx snow leopard 10.6.2, installed virtualbox, created a partition with it and on that I installed Ubuntu (looking more specifically, I found it is Karmic Koala). For one, is kubuntu ubuntu karmic like mine? Or is that something different? Anyways, Did all that, installed guest permissions and everything, but before that and still, when I load up firefox, I can search some google things, but whenever I go to an actual page or something that seems like it needs just a little more muscle than google searching, it just crashes and disappears. So I basically can't access the internet.
I even tried installing Google Chrome through the terminal by some tutorial on another site. It worked and I got it all installed. It does the exact same thing Firefox does. I can do a couple of searches (sometimes not even that before it crashes) but when I go any further than that, it crashes.

Apr 10, 2010I upgraded to 9.1 and now my web browsers are not working properly--FireFox would not connect to certain sites, others worked fine. I installed Chrome and it worked for a short period--now none of my browsers work at all and package install manager does not work. Overall performance is much slower than before upgrade--boot time is about 4 times slower. I'd like to fix this build because I had it tweaked just the way I liked it before the upgrade--it was working great and now I'm sorry I upgraded there any hope or should I just start with a fresh install of 9.1 or even the previous version

Oct 14, 2010I don't know what happened, but sometime within the last week I have started having a really annoying issue. Whenever I open a web page, that contains embedded Flash, in any browser (Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium, or Opera), the entire browser, and all windows and tabs, freezes for about :15 seconds or so. After that time, everything unfreezes and works as normal, except for the video which often times doesn't even play after the freeze occurs. I don't believe I have made any major changes to my system, just the updates that show up in the notification area.

Oct 22, 2010Firefox 3.6.11, Chromium 6, Google Chrome 7, they all crash or freeze on me and I can't figure out what is going on. I'm on a fresh/clean install of 10.10 with all updates installed. I've tried reviewing all the logs in /var/logs/ but didn't find anything unusual although I might have missed something. I'm using the proprietary nVidia driver for my video card (GeForce FX 5500 - 173.x drivers) so I'm not sure if that may have something to do with it or that it may be my NIC card? I've gone to the NIC card manufacturers website (Realtek) for updated drivers, but the site says the drivers are built in to the kernel and there is no download available. It seems as though the only time it crashes or the screen freezes (sometimes with the lights blinking on my keyboard) is when I'm browsing the internet.
