I need to switch the "lucid" parts in my ppa's to "maverick" in the format that gedit uses. I believe this will fix some of the software conflicts I am having.

I use a linux machine at work and a mac at home. I can ssh from my machine at home to my work machine. But the only editor that I have access to on the command line then is vi, which I don't like.
Is there a way to use gedit on my mac to edit files remotely over an ssh connection?
This page says that it can be done, but I think that it assumes that you are using gedit on ubuntu. On my mac (os 10.5.8) I don't have the "bookmark" option when I click "connect to server".

After a month or so on a WUBI install (Lucid Lynx 64bit) I decided to pass to a clean install to a dedicated partition and here I am, almost happy. I have installed 5* ( uninstalled & installed) gedit-plugins package by every means I know of (apt-get from terminal, ubuntu software center, synaptics) and I also have downloaded and unzipped the package to ~/.gnome2/gedit/plugins folder. But none of the plugins is working.
I don't know if it is relevant, but i noticed the following: on my wubi installation i had installed gedit-plugins with apt-get and it had installed in the ~/.gnome2/gedit/plugins folder. Now I find the contents of the package in /usr/lib/gedit-2/plugins and /usr/lib64/gedit-2/plugins. I don't know if it has anything to do with anything.

Does anyone know how to install html-export plugin for Gedit ?
I took it from here: [url]
It is pretty old, was not updated for a long time.
When configuring I get:
Code:
Alternatively you may set the GEDIT_CFLAGS and GEDIT_LIBS environment variables to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details.
I have installed gedit-devel but it did not help unfortunately.

I want to install the LaTeX plugin for gedit. There is a Ubuntu package for this, but it seems to want to install an entire TeX system in addition to the plugin. I keep my LaTeX current from the texlive distribution, and Ubuntu tends to a year behind in its LaTeX distribution. Question: Will the package installer detect that I have a current LaTeX system and not install an older version?

I need some plugin for Gedit (or maybe other HTML-editor) which will make tags of words, like: I type "div", hit some hotkeys or anything else with keyboard and get "<div></div>". The same with all the words I type in. Do you guys know which piece of software can do such things?

I was looking at some Vim plugins, and I installed one called Abolish. The page from where I got it [URL] only says:
install details
Extract in ~/.vim or ~vimfiles
So I extracted it in ~/.vim. Now, the issue is that, if I edit a file as root, I am able to use the commands; however, when I edit a file as a normal user, these commands won't work. So... could this be a permissions issue? Or should I copy the plugin in some other directory, maybe?

I'm having an issue when I run apt-get and try to use autocomplete. It seems to only happen when I try to remove or install certain items - like gwibber, gnome stuff, etc. So let me show you what happens:
Code:
user@mycomp ~ $ sudo apt-get remove gwigrep-status: /var/lib/dpkg/status:13456: expected a colon .
So I typed in gwi pressed tab and it came up with the /var/lib/dpkg/status:13456: expected a colon (newline) .

I did a bunch of uninstalls and reinstalls lately, trying different distros. Now I'm back to Ubuntu but tab autocomplete in terminals doesn't work anymore. It is quite less convenient now to use the terminal. I tried changing interpreter to /bin/bash and it doesn't work. I use guake.

I was using windows recently and noticed that in their command line, the autocomplete is in some ways a little more intelligent (although based on my short experience ours is more robust); for example, if you have a directory named blah and a file name bl, in Linux "cd bl <tab>" will result in "cd bl" while in Windows I get "cd blah" because it recognizes that blah and not bl is the appropriate argument to cd. Similarly unrar will target rar files first.I am not saying Windows command line is better; Windows command line is in general a piece of junk.

I use evolution a lot during my working day, I work in IT so my work is heavily email driven. I have used ubuntu on my personal computers for a while now and last week decided to migrate my work computer from Windows to ubuntu. For my work email, contacts and calendars I use google apps for business (highly recommended by the way!) and evolution syncs all 3 brilliantly. As outlook uses the nk2 file to autocomplete email addresses when you begin to type them into the to, cc or bcc bar.
I can't seem to enable the same feature in evolution. I have gone into Edit > Preferences > Mail Preferences > Automatic Contacts. I have then put a tick in the check box "create address book entries when sending emails" and I have selected the ubuntu one address book (don't want my gmail contacts being clogged up). After sending some emails it doesn't seem to store the addresses in the 'history'.

When I type into a box that auto-completes, the window stops letting me type as soon as a suggestion comes up. I have to tab out of the window and come back to it.
This is mildly annoying for browsing on the internet and almost debilitating trying to use programs like Eclipse.
This occurred for me on 10.04, so I upgraded yesterday to 10.10 and the problem still occurs (and more problems!).

I'm reading about shared, static, and dynamic libraries. What is SDL? Is it static, shared, or dynamic?
I always thought a library would be a lot of .h and .cpp files compiled separately into .o files and then if you compiled your own program you could use the -l parameter to link the library and it was all compiled together. Now I'm not so sure.
I don't even see any SDL .cpp files in my system anywhere. All I have are lots of SDL .h files in /usr/include/SDL and I don't really understand the code in them.
I'm making a wild guess here: SDL is a shared library. SDL itself is NOT compiled into my program, therefore SDL must be on any system my program tries to run on. When I compile and link SDL all it needs is the header files to know what SDL function and objects it can use. And then on every system it uses an already compiled SDL shared library thingy somewhere.
So... where is that part of SDL? All I can find are header files.
I'm thinking the advantage of shared libraries is that someone could say update SDL on their own system and take advantage of the new features without having to download new executables with the new version of SDL compiled into them for every program that uses SDL.
So if I'm making an editor and a game engine and they both use a lot of the same .cpp and .h files that I wrote and I'm tired of updating one and then the other and I need to turn them into a library, then a shared library might be kind of a silly solution. I could just make a static library. Right? Because it's not SDL. Nobody else is ever going to use this library.
