Ubuntu :: Gedit Always Opens A Blank Document?
Nov 25, 2010
Any time I'm following a tutorial or guide on something that involves gedit, the files I'm attempting to edit are opened as blank and I can't save them even if they weren't blank because it strangely thinks they aren't there. (see attachments)

I'm using Fedora 10 with XFCE. Every time I open Gedit, it opens a instance on every workspace. The circle icon on my window border is selected (meaning, enabled on all workspaces). When I disable it to appear on one workspace, then close and restart(program), Gedit opens normal (current workspace). Question is: How to keep this current configuration? If I restart my system, and start up Gedit, it appears on all workspaces again.

Back in Ubuntu 6.06 I edited the xhtml.tags.gz XML file to give me a common list of xhtml tags that I use in my everyday web page editing. It was at a time when an xhtml editor was not readily available off-the-shelf.
Gedit came packaged with xhtml.tags.gz and other language taglists, but its alphabetical listing by name of tags and attributes was not helpful to me, so I edited some new tag groups containing tags organized in a way more suitable to myself.
By breaking it down into tag groups that typically didn't require a lot of scrolling to find what I wanted, and by having head tags in one menu and body tags in another, it cut down on having to sort through the hundreds of tags to choose from.
I also created a menu for editing the taglist itself as well as one for when I was writing rich-text email that would be copied into a mailing list program form. It worked flawlessly until a recent update brought with it a new version of gedit. It either was when I upgraded from 8.08 to 9.09 or from 9.09 to 10.04, I don't remember which.
Example of how it works: An example: I click on "body" on the left pane and I would get at the current cursor position this insert:

I'm a ruby on rails programmer, and I installed a snippet that supports .rhtml or .html.erb code (the rails code) in GEDIT HOwever, everytime I make a new .html.erb file, the snippet doesnt automatically activate the document. I have to manuelly go up to View=> Highlight Mode => Scripts => RHTML How can I set it so that all the files that have an .html.erb or .rhtml extension automatically use that snippet?

I'm on Debian Squeeze, and my terminal emulator is gnome-terminal. For some reason, my terminal has started to open completely blank, without showing
Code:
user@computername:~$
All it shows is a flashing cursor, and I have to press ctrl+c to get that command prompt prefix to show up. I'd like to know how to fix this. xsession-errors shows nothing useful regarding the gnome-terminal.

When I open an open office document from an NFS share it always opens as readonly. This was a problem I had on Arch linux and the fix was to change the locking options in the soffice script but I've tried that fix here and it doesn't work. I've seen a lot of discussions but they all go back to changing the locking options in soffice, has anyone got any alternative fixes or one that definitely works with locking?

I have recently got a new computer, and I have been trying to install openSUSE 10.3 on it. But, the screen will go blank and become unresponsive if I boot with the default options. When I switch to text mode, it boot and stops when it outputs time: pit clocksource has been installed. Switching to safe settings will make no difference. Right now, I am using openSUSE 11.1, but I'm not very happy with it, so I intend to replace it with 10.3. I'm not sure what the pit clocksource is, and can it be disabled, or some workaround?
my specs are:
AMD Athlon 64
PCIe NVIDIA 7100 GS
NVIDIA MCP61P northbridge chipset

When i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

Is there any way to automatically close the previous file as soon as another is played?

In Lucid, I got rid of both gnome panels, and just now remembered that Rhythmbox opens to the top panel by default (at least for me), which means when I opened it I got nothing. How do I change this so that it just opens onto the desktop? I looked in edit/preferences of Rhythmbox but theres nothing in there.

I am trying to write a file to a SD card in my card reader. When Ubuntu first boots in and I open up the SD card It gives the option to create folders and files. However after a second or two the window closes and then will only let me vew the files.Does anyone know how I can fix this so that the SD card is able to be written to?The lock is not on the SD card, and under permissions it states that I have permission to create and delete files.I am using an up to date version of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04I have tried searching for a solution but cannot find anything relevant that works
Edit :

I've just allowed Ghostery to update to version 2.3. Now every time I open my browser (Firefox), a Ghostery tab opens after my homepage tab opens. How do/can I prevent this (the opening of a Ghostery tab in Firefox) from happening?
Edit: what is popping up is a "Ghostery Configuration Walkthrough", a setup wizard. I've looked on the Ghostery forum; some are seeking ways to get around this wizard; but, so far, no answers. A Google search didn't produce anything either. So, I guess I'll run the wizard and see what happens; even though there are no settings that I would change.

I have a win7 laptop and installed a dual-boot ubuntu 10.10. I'm using firefox & thunderbird, shared between windows and ubuntu (default profiles are on a fat32 disk that is shared between the two OSs). I can mount the fat32 disk as usual, but I can't get firefox OR thunderbird to start unless I start them from a terminal using 'sudo'. This is kinda strange. I used to do this all the time and never had a problem before.
I installed firefox, then did:
cd /etc/firefox
sudo firefox -P
in the profile manager, I set the profile file etc, but when I open firefox without doing 'sudo firefox', it hangs up and cannot find the profile. Why do I have to use 'sudo' to open firefox or thunderbird?
It works fine on my other laptop, but I've deleted & reinstalled ubuntu 3 times on this laptop and still have the same problem.

When I open 'firefox' from the app panel at the top of the screen, it opens on the last web site visited.
I've looked every place I can think to tell it to open in a blank screen. My preferences are set to blank. Right click on the icon > properties shows 'firefox %u'.
Is there something in 'about:config' that would control this and what do I search for?
