Ubuntu :: GIMP User Manual (from Help Menu) Odd Sequence?

Jul 30, 2011

Noticed in 10.04, under GNOME, opening the GIMP user manual from the help menu opens it in the help browser in a strange order:index, preface, iii, ii, biblio, A, B, C, i ...Not sure if this is the right place to mention this.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Add A Manual Grub2 Menu Entry?

May 6, 2011

Having just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 I noticed that my Grub menu had not upgraded. The upgrade was not as straight forward as it should have been as the PC hung at the end of the installation resulting in a reboot and running dpkg in safe mode to get it all back up and running.

To fix the incorrect grub menu.lst file which was not updating, I renamed the original file and then ran sudo update-grub. It generated a new and correct file. However, my Windows partition was not listed as a Grub menu option.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Gimp 2.7 And Python (Import Error - No Module Named Gimp)

Mar 2, 2010

If you had Gimp 2.6 (with gimp-plugin-registry installed) and installed Gimp 2.7 to try its new goodies, but Layer Effects are not showing, and when executing "gimp" from console you get these *nasty* errors:

Code:
This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.
gimp-user-install: migrating from /home/user/.gimp-2.6
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/layerfx.py", line 23, in <module>
import gimp, gimpplugin, math
ImportError: No module named gimp .....

If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gimp - Gimp-help-en - On 10.04 Lucid Lynx - Installing Other Applications And Preforming System Tasks?

Jun 12, 2010

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.

Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)

1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:

2. Then load up the language support application:

3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.

4. Fix'd

I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

The main appeal of linux to me is being able to choose which window manager, which desktop environment etc are used but I cannot seem to find out how to configure these things.I've been googling extensively and looking in books, the forums, ubuntu community and documentation but this information does not seem to be out there.

Ubuntu :: VNC With SSH / Error In Manual?

Jan 11, 2011

how to use create a ssh tunnel for vnc. I have fought with this explanation for some days, and hopeless trial and error finally worked. Here is the explanationEach time you want to connect to your PC, follow these steps:

Find your PC's public name or IP address. Unless your PC has been assigned a memorable name, the easiest way to do this is to go to whatismyip.com from your PC. You can assign your PC a name by getting one from a dynamic DNS provider.Start the SSH client on the computer you'll log in from.Tell the SSH client to use local port-forwarding to connect port 5,900 on your desktop to port 5,900 on localhost.Via the SSH client, run the command x11vnc -safer -localhost -nopw -once -display :0 on the computer whose desktop you will view.where someone suggests to create a local port forward. The person who asks in this thread, has apparently read the same manual as I. The suggestion works, but I am not entirely certain that I have created a secure connection by "locally" forwarding port 5900 on the phone to localhost:5900. Can someone confirm this?Am I correct in assuming that the line "Tell the SSH client to use local port-forwarding to connect port 5,900 on your desktop to port 5,900 on localhost." in the explanation should read "on your remote laptop"?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upsplash Startup Sequence After Upgrade To 10.04

May 8, 2010

Having upgraded to 10.04 seemingly without any problems as everything looks to be working so far. The only strange thing I have noticed so far is the new startup upsplash. After the BIOS startup I get approx, 25 seconds of blank screen then the new upsplash which is a multicoloured and very indistinct UBUNTU with what looks like DVD/CD control symbols below. After this I get the new purple Ubuntu screen and then the login screen. Total time approx.46 seconds. I also get the same indistinct UBUNTU when closing down. Is this the correct startup sequence for 10.04 and is any else seeing this strange multicoloured indistinct UBUNTU screen. Is it my system/config at fault or is this the norm?
