Ubuntu Installation :: Upsplash Startup Sequence After Upgrade To 10.04

May 8, 2010

Having upgraded to 10.04 seemingly without any problems as everything looks to be working so far. The only strange thing I have noticed so far is the new startup upsplash. After the BIOS startup I get approx, 25 seconds of blank screen then the new upsplash which is a multicoloured and very indistinct UBUNTU with what looks like DVD/CD control symbols below. After this I get the new purple Ubuntu screen and then the login screen. Total time approx.46 seconds. I also get the same indistinct UBUNTU when closing down. Is this the correct startup sequence for 10.04 and is any else seeing this strange multicoloured indistinct UBUNTU screen. Is it my system/config at fault or is this the norm?

General :: Startup Sequence Without Login?

Jun 11, 2011

I have an embedded box on which I am developping a driver using a linux kernel. I frequently need to reboot it and relogin as root.

I wounder whether I can modify the boot sequence so that it directly boots into a bash belonging to user 'root'.

I know that this represents a security issue -- looking at my "use case" this is of concern.

General :: Change Startup Script Sequence?

Sep 18, 2010

I have an external drive mounted courtesy of an entry in fstab. The drive isn't detected at boot time until AFTER the backuppc service that will use the drive has started. I have to therefore manually stop and restart the backuppc service once booting has completed, otherwise backuppc thinks there is no drive available to it.

How can I force the mounting of my external device to occur BEFORE the backuppc service starts?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 server edition

Fedora :: Boot Sequence Of 11 Using Lvm - Message - Press '1' To Enter Interactive Startup ?

Jun 15, 2010

I've been fiddling about with vortexbox (the one before 1.4 I think), for a while. This is a music ripping and server rpm setup using Fedora 11 as the base.

As it was on a test machine, decided to try changing the logical volume sizes of LogVol00 and LogVol02 to fit a few more cd's on 02 before getting a new pc (just to see how it works).

Logged on and opened up the graphic version of lvm (using gnome). Then selected the LogVol02 logical volume, select edit, changed name to LogVol02-Storage, saved and logged out. Rebooted vortexbox since then its been unable to start properly (is this a kernel panic?).

Read up a lot on lvm on the net, have access to Fedora 11 disk 1, so logged on. Eventually managed (I thought to) to change LogVol02-Storage to LogVol02 using lvrename.

However, still refuses to boot completely.

The message it gives is as follows (sort of): Welcome to Fedora Press '1' to enter interactive startup

Setting up Logical Volume Management: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group 'VolGroup00' now active

*** An error occurred during file system check.
*** Droping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell.

Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue):

Loving vortexbox appart from this. Will it be easier just to reinstall everything? If so, is there a way of listing all the changes I've done so I can reproduce (I'm thinking of just looking at all the commands I ran on the CLI).

Otherwise, is there a way of listing all of the commands I ran in terminal and piping them into a file so I can see what I need to do to rebuild after reinstalling?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 11.04: Nothing On Startup?

May 5, 2011

I recently installed Xubuntu 11.04 fresh on my machine. There were some minor freezes that occurred that seem to be pretty common while reading these forums, but other than that it was working great.

A couple of times on restart the computer froze up. And when I say froze up, nothing appeared. Usually there's a splash screen with the "HP" logo, but in this case it didn't even get that far. My monitor was black but the orange "idle" power light was on. I had to hold the power button down to shut it off and turn it back on again. After that it was able to boot up as normal.

I should have taken this as a warning, and it has gotten worse and worse. Now I'm at the point where I can't even turn the computer on even once to get it back to the desktop. Like I said, on startup, there is no splash screen, no grub menu, no audible beeps, no blinking cursor, just a black screen.

I bought this off of woot a while back ago, so if you're looking for system specs here they are: [URL]

Also, I read this forum here [URL] about graphics errors, but I figured this didn't apply to my case because the users there were able to get to a terminal or the grub boot menu.

What I would like to do is do a fresh install of 10.04 LTS. Does anyone know of a way that I would be able to do this if I can't even get the HP splash screen to appear in order to boot from a USB stick?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04 Freezes On Startup

May 3, 2011

I just tried to upgrade from ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 (64bit). Everything went fine until the machine tried to reboot. Now it stops while booting on the screen where the ubuntu logo and five red dots appear. I'm unable to open a terminal (alt+ctrl+f1 does not result in anything) and the only thing I've been able to do is to reboot the machine.

If I reboot by pressing ctrl+alt+delte I see some information for a short while, it seems that the boot stops on "checking battery state" I've googled this, and it seems that quite a few other have had the same problem, but they have been able to open a terminal, any ideas on how I can do this? Or any other suggestions on how to fix this?

My system is a dekstop with a Nvidia GTX 260 graphics card. I recently installed the newest Nvidia driver. I forgot to mention that I did an online upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Startup Occasionally Crashes After 10.04 Upgrade / Fix It?

May 1, 2010

Yesterday, I upgraded my Ubuntu system from 8.04 to 10.04. The installation process went smoothly, and the first boot of 10.04 was very smooth. However, after I selected 10.04 from my boot screen, the start-up process went very slow and then froze at a black screen. I shut it down and restarted it, only to have it load normally.

This happens on and off and I don't know why it's doing this.Does anyone have any idea what this could be or has had the same problems?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Desktop Freezes In Boot Sequence

Sep 1, 2011

I am attempting to boot Ubuntu off of a USB drive. The USB drive was created via the USB creator in the .iso file dowloaded from Ubuntu. But for some reason when I go into my BIOS and boot from the USB drive, it spits out one line of syslinux and copyright information ending in "et al" and then a flashing cursor but doesn't go any further. I would provide a screenshot but that isnt an option at the moment with not being able to get past the first line of booting. Also, I have never used Ubuntu as this is my first attempt at running it and it is obviously not going the best.

Fedora Installation :: NVIDIA Quadro FX And 10 - System Always Locks Up During The 'Anacron' Testing Sequence

Feb 18, 2009

I recently purchased a Quadro FX 4800 and tried to install it on Fedora 10. During the installation, Fedora didn't recognize my new graphics card and began installing the OS in text mode. I stopped the installation and tried to start over, this time I passed the following command: linux resolution=1024x768. I then proceeded with the installation, and again, I was posed with a text mode installation. I continued with the text mode install and when Fedora was done installing, I rebooted and system just locked up.

At this point I was frustrated, so I reinstalled my old 8800 graphics card and started a new install with something that worked in the past. When the install was done, I loaded the latest NVIDIA drivers and the rebooted. I reinstalled my new graphics card (Quadro FX 4800) then powered up my system. I thought everything was good to go and all of a sudden my system flickered and then locked up during the 'Anacron' testing phase. I then rebooted with the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" hotkeys, but my system always locks up during the 'Anacron' testing sequence. I am aware that the Quadro FX 4800 is a few months old, but how can I get it to work in linux? It has gotten so bad, that I had to resort to using MS Vista.

System specs:
Intel Core Duo Quad Core
4 gigs DDR2
SATA RAID 0
Mobo: 680i SLI
800WATT Power Supply

Ubuntu :: Upgrade To 10.04 And On Start Desktop Doesn't Startup

Sep 3, 2010

I recently updated to Ubuntu 10.04. On this same machine I've used Ubuntu for 3 or 4 years now. Upgrading from 8 - 9 - 10. I love Ubuntu and use it as my everyday work environment. Anyway, recently when I start my machine in the morning it boots to commandline instead of the desktop. For the last couple days I boot to safe-mode and do a package repair. Sometimes more than once. Eventually I get the desktop to start but it is annoying. When trying to boot to Fail Safe Graphics Mode(?) I get an error stating: "Fatal Server Error: No Screens." The message referred me to /var/log/Xorg/failsafe.log. Here is a snippet of the end of that log file:

Also, I'm using an NVidia graphics card on an HP machine. I installed the "current version" accelerated graphics driver which it says is proprietary.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Sequence With Dual Boot And Two Drives?

Dec 10, 2010

recently sent up another computer as follows:Two sata drives. Windows 7 was installed on the first drive(sda)and booted successfully. This drive was disconnected ( I have had some installs where Unbuntu wipes out the existing C drive eventhough I am installing to D) and Ubuntu was installed to the second drive (sdb). At one point I had to rebuild the grup on the Ubuntu drive and was careful to make it installed on the Ubuntu drive. To my surprise when the PC booted up I saw the Grub menu with a menu entry for Windows. The Windows drive was always the primary drive before the Ubuntu install. I was planning on the Windows drive being the boot drive and using a boot manager to determine where to go from there. If I utilize the BIOS boot option (F12) I can boot each drive individually. I cannot in BIOS set a particular drive to boot - just a hard drive. Everything is working I am just curious why the primary drive does not boot first. IN BIOS the Windows drive is a primary SATA with a lower number that the Ubuntu drive which is listed as a secondary drive.
