Ubuntu :: Freezes Due To TWO RAM CARDS?

I am new here, and clueless as to what im doing. Soo.. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 i386. It took me forever to install because it would hang up (Mouse lock and light go off, keyboard lock, screen lock) every time i got to the graphical part of the installer, so i used the alternate installer. After installing correctly, it would still lock up within 3 minutes of login. Now that ive removed one stick (512) of ram, there are no more problems.
Here is my comp config:
Installer: ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Motherboard: Albatron K8T800
Ram: 1 gig Corsair ram(2 x 512) **Note, I removed one to get the comp to work, so its actually 512 now.
Video: Nvidia Geforce 6800gt
Both sticks of ram are the same so it is not because of mix and matching ram.

I have a dns server started with 2 NIC Cards in it. The bios sees both cards but they both dont show in ifconfig. is there a way to activate the second card?

We are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?

how well TV cards work in Ubuntu.I want to know what are the best prices, what works in Ubuntu and whether or not they will "lag" with video.Problem is my television just packed in, Rather than get a new one I'd rather just get a PC card because it'd be more practical with the room I have.

My situation is like so: I have two NVIDIA GTX 460 graphics cards running the latest (260.19.06) proprietary drivers. I SLI these together under Windows 7 for gaming. However, for day to day usage I have Ubuntu 10.1 running on my two monitors using twinview.
My problem is that the xserver refuses to load (I get the "screens found, but none have a usable configuration" error) when both my graphics cards are plugged in and powered; if I remove the power to one, the system works fine. If I was just using Ubuntu, I would simply leave one unplugged but, because I'm not, its a pain to have to plug/unplug one every time I want to switch operating system.
I have tried every modification to the xorg.conf file that I can think of and a few more found in the documentation and via google, all to no avail. I have also tried everything again with twinview disabled and only one monitor plugged in.
I am aware that SLI isn't compatible with twinview, I don't really need to use it, although it would, of course, be nice.

I am setting up a class using a vmWare ESX server. Because of security proceedures, the students are not allowed to connect directly to the internet. Because of file space, the are severated on 3 servers. I am trying to set up a server that connects to the internet and all 3 subnets that the students are on.
I have configure 4 virtual NICs 1 with DHCP connected to the internet. The other 3 goes to each student network. I can get 2 working at a time. 1 using the DHCP and 1 of the other networks. It seems to be order dependent. On the main server I can ping the local address. When I ping the students systems, I can reach 1 but not the other 2. I get a host unreachable message.
Is there a limitation to 2 NICS. If not, is there any magic incantation to run the 4 nics?

Is it possible to run a box with 2 graphics cards in it with one card being a PCIe x16 and the other being a PCIe x1?
Unsure whether this would cause all sorts of problems with ubuntu and/or the nvidia drivers (2 quatro NVS 290's).

I set up a Ubuntu machine using the OnBoard video, and it runs OK.
Now, I put a nVidia card in it (2009'ish 512mb), and there is no screen after the BIOS screen.
If I boot off a Live CD, everything is fine, so the card is supported.
How do I get Ubuntu to look for the new card on bootup? Do I have to reinstall? If so, will it wipe out the installed applications and data?

i have ubuntu 10.10 64b and for some reason last night the wired network autoeth01 suddenly will not connect to my router. it is a dual boot machine so i booted into windows and it is working fine in that OS.
I then had a look at the status on my laptop running ubuntu 10.10 32b and that was showing the same message "wired network autoeth01 disconnected" i cannot for the life of me figure this out. just before it was disconnected i had been copying 7gigs worth of data using samba from the 32b machine to the 64 bit machine.
i have tried deleting the wired entry and recreating it.
tried different cables
even changed the router
works with all windows machines connected to network
here is what comes up in lfconfig:

I am running a dual boot system Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit) and Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) on a Dell Inspiron 540s. I currently have an 8 GB USB stick inserted in a 4 port USB hub. I can read files on the device but I cannot write to any of the files. Using the ls and chmod commands I get the following outputs. Note that after assigning rwxr to all users nothing changes. Incidentally, since I could not write to the stick I created a text file in windows and saved it to the USB stick as a text file.

Initially I had just teh HD 3600 in the PC, using the "AMDccle" drivers and configuration running two monitors.
I then added an old RV280 PCI card to allow a third monitor. When the PC powers on the bios output is on the RV280, once linux starts the RV280 monitor goes to the ubuntu desktop colour, the two monitors on the HD3600 get a signal (power up) and display the logon screen.
When I log on the two HD3600 screens become my desktop. If I ctrl alt f1 etc. the terminal screen comes up on the RV280 and the two HD3600 screens go blank. This suggests that all 3 monitors/ 2 graphics cards are all working ok, and ubuntu is happy with them. My problem now is to make the RV280 accessable via X/gnome at the same time as the HD3600. It would be nice to have it as a 3rd monitor on a very wide desktop, but I'd settle for it being its own little window running various tasks/programs such as mail/firefox.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10. My work requires me to frequently swap video cards between an ATI Radeon 5870 card and an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX card. My question is: can the ATI driver (fglrx - catalyst 10.2) and the NVIDIA driver (nvidia 190.29) co-exist? Or do I need to reinstall the driver every time I change the card? I would like for the drivers to be able to co-exist so it would only be a matter of restarting my machine with the new card and choose the right xorg.conf file (perhaps from the GRUB menu).

Hi i am looking at buying a ASUS K52JR-SX052X i3-350M 2.26GHz, 4GB, 320GB, 15.6" WXGA LED, HD5470M 1GB, 11N, BT. or a ASUS G51JX-HD-SX232V i7-720QM, 1.6GHz, 6GB, 500GB, 15.6" WXGA LED, GTS360M 1GB, BT.

I have my Qwest DSL modem port forwarding port 80 to 192.168.3.235 however this doesn't seem to work if I have both cards running. If I remove the second card (eth1) and reconfigure eth0 to use 192.168.3.235 I can port forward into my webserver.

I was just wondering if is an easy way to configure three monitors run across two video cards (Nvidia Leadtek GTS250 PCI-E 2.0 1G 2DVI ) 2 on one, 1 on the other under the one xserver? I tried to get it going using the Nvidia driver package with no luck - 2 monitors seemed to be simple to configure using Twinview setting on a single xserver (my current settings) and I was hoping their may be a simple extension for three and if so is there an easy way to go about this? i had just went out and got some older blade servers and put ubuntu server on it and when i was installing it it asked if i wanted to set an ip because it didnt get a dhcp responce i said no then because i was going to do it later when i do a ifconfig now all i get is a lo interface but if i do sudo lspci i get 2 ethernet controllers and they show as follows 2:03.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom corporation NetXtreme BCM5702X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02) 2:04.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme Bcm57j02x Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)

I'm running 10.04 64 bit, and the Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN does not work with n routers. I'd like to either upgrade the card, or buy a usb adapter, but I can't figure out which cards will work. I've searched[URL].. which lists supported wifi cards, but most of the info on that page is not relevant to lucid, and hasn't been updated at all this year. I saw elsewhere that any card with the atheros chipset will work, but what cards have this? Will all of them with this chipset work?

i have been trying to figure out how to get my CAC working on my laptop so i can log into service portal sites and do things while i am TDY that require CAC logins. I have followed this tutorial [URL], and i got as far as getting the module installed into firefox, but it wouldnt aknowledge my card being inserted and wouldnt prompt me to select a certificate or anything. Then i tried OpenSC, but for one it wouldnt acknowldege my card being inserted and the module wouldnt load in firefox.
I mainly want to use this for logging into AirForce Portal, DTS, and Webmail while im TDY so i dont have to find a GOV computer to do that stuff on. I would ultimately like to get it setup to where i can use my CAC to login to my laptop just like a Government computer, but if i cant do that right now i wont cry over it.
Im using a SCM SCR3340, i havent seen it on any supported hardware list yet, but so far coolkey and opensc have both detected my reader, just opensc didnt detect my card being inserted.

I'm currently using windows 7 on my computer, I have an ATI GPU and I am willing to install Ubuntu to finally rock it out. However I'm going to change my video card for a newer nVidia one in a few weeks and I'm wondering about the drivers change.. Under windows it should be quite simple however I'm quite afraid of possible issues I could have under Ubuntu. Probably (I believe and hope) everything will just work fine, simply plug and play, no conflicts, nothing at all. However I'm asking because I would like to avoid any issues, as I prefer dealing with windows one month or so more than having driver issues under ubuntu...
Resume: is it possible that changing GPU (brand) generates driver issue under ubuntu 10.10?

I've been using linux for roughly 12 years now but I've always avoided linux on the desktop since touching X back in the day was quite a hassle. I recently decided that rather than keeping my windows desktop full of 15 PuTTY instances, I should rock the *nix desktop.
I started by installing Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop. It detected my two monitors handing off a pci express card just fine. I decided to install the ATI drivers when it prompted me - the proprietary drivers would let me select to use the monitors separately, but would always just default back to mirroring the screens. I was unable to get it to stop that, so I had to go back to the open source drivers. Which is fine, I don't really need the 3d accel. Roll forward a week, I ordered another video card to add another screen. I purchased another ATI card, since word on the street is that same-vendor chipsets play best together. This one had to be PCI, if this matters.
dmesg reports the new card is fine and happy, but the Monitors GUI thing doesn't detect any monitors off the new card, or report anything about it. So: what should I do to make the second video card get noticed?[URL]...

Been looking around and have been trying for 4 days to get my 3 monitors to work with my 2 video cards , When the system starts up I get the bootup screens on the 3rd monitor , then the login box shows up on the 1st monitor and when logging out I see the shutdown screen on the 3rd monitor again , so I know ubuntu see's it , but not sure how to include it in the regular desktop . It's just a lighted very dark red and I can't move my mouse or any windows over to it , here is my xorg.conf that I modified and tried to get it to work with :
