i am looking for some cards to use with Myth TV. Here in Australia we have DVB-T signal.Am i correct in understanding that there is no value in having a decoder on the card /stick as the signal is already in compressed format?

how well TV cards work in Ubuntu.I want to know what are the best prices, what works in Ubuntu and whether or not they will "lag" with video.Problem is my television just packed in, Rather than get a new one I'd rather just get a PC card because it'd be more practical with the room I have.

I'm running 10.04 64 bit, and the Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN does not work with n routers. I'd like to either upgrade the card, or buy a usb adapter, but I can't figure out which cards will work. I've searched[URL].. which lists supported wifi cards, but most of the info on that page is not relevant to lucid, and hasn't been updated at all this year. I saw elsewhere that any card with the atheros chipset will work, but what cards have this? Will all of them with this chipset work?
View 3 Replies View RelatedBeen looking around and have been trying for 4 days to get my 3 monitors to work with my 2 video cards , When the system starts up I get the bootup screens on the 3rd monitor , then the login box shows up on the 1st monitor and when logging out I see the shutdown screen on the 3rd monitor again , so I know ubuntu see's it , but not sure how to include it in the regular desktop . It's just a lighted very dark red and I can't move my mouse or any windows over to it , here is my xorg.conf that I modified and tried to get it to work with :

Did an upgrade to Natty - on first boot, when I log in, it tells me I don't have the hardware to run Unity (not likely - it's an NVidia GTX460, not even a year old). I assume it's a driver problem, so I install the restricted NVidia binary drivers through jockey. That's the ubuntu way, I figure, let it do its thing. So with those enabled, I have 3d acceleration (hi, World of Warcraft!) but still no Unity. I blow away .gconf* and .gnome* (as I'm used to doing whenever something gnome-related goes wonky which, in Ubuntu, seems to be every single Ubuntu release) and absolutely no love. I log in and again, it tells me I don't have the hardware. I scoff at this dialog box as I fire up WoW and frag some orcs in glorious 3d. No, Mr. Dialog box, you're a filthy liar. How do I coax Unity into running on this thing? Or does it just... not? Switching to Nouveau isn't an option, as I need my games (and anyway, I don't think it was even in use originally).

Does anyone own a relatively cheap (less than $40USD) PCI card that works flawlessly, or close to flawlessly with 64bit Ubuntu 11.04? I need to get off of this 35ft ethernet cord. Cat5 + crossing top of stairs = problem in the future.
I have an eeePC 1000HG, basically identical to the 1000H but with an integrated 3G modem.
Mostly the netbook works fine, the only big problem is the 3G modem will not connect to the network.I added a "Mobile Broadband" network connection from the network icon at the top right.The OS has detected a modem, it reports as a "HUAWEI Technology HUAWEI Mobile" in the mobile broadband network setup wizard, and as the follwing with lsusb;

E620 USB Modem I don't know whether that's correct - I can't find information anywhere which definitively specifies which model of modem is in there.... I did find some reference to it being a Huawei E770V, but I don't know if that's true or not. I have installed the modeswitch packages from Synaptic, which made no apparent difference.
I followed the wizard and picked Australia as a location and Virgin Mobile as a provider and Mobile Broadband as a billing plan.When I try and connect I just get an error saying the connection failed.The modem worked out of the box under eeebuntu 3.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.0.4 with an Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection. I have been trying for a couple weeks now different techniques to get my wired ethernet connection working properly. I have a seeming common issue with my e100 driver dropping connection and having hard time picking it back up sometimes. I want to purchase a relatively inexpensive Ethernet card whose generic Linux driver actually operates it CORRECTLY, open up comp and put it in, and update to 9.10. Any list of Ethernet cards that are know to work flawlessly on Ubuntu, or at least tell me which card YOU are using that works perfect without having to write code, install wrapper programs, etc...?

I have 2 ATI cards that I used to use on windows to run 4 monitors. A recurring problem has been to get them detected in linux. Only my secondary card is picked up linux. When I manage the displays it detects the 2 monitors connected that card.
What are the specific steps I should take to get the second card detected? Supposedly there is a tool system-config-xfree. I don't have it, yum can't find it.
Also I heard it has something to do with editing some xorg.conf file or something to that effect. I have absolutely no idea how to find the "bus id" of my card, or lookup the horizontal refresh rates, etc..
I would probably have no problem following the documentation & editing the file if I knew a good way to find these values.
Someone also suggested installing linux twice and saving the xorg.conf it generates each time (with different card each time) and then merging the two by hand. That is like killing a fly with a hammer though, when I do this again and again in the future It'd be nice to not have to take twice as long.
I've got an old laptop wich wireless adapter is a Gigabyte GN-WI01 GS MINI PCI(its chipset is Realtek RTL8169/8110, I believe) and I'm not able to make it run in Wifislax 3.1 Live CD. I downloaded the linux drivers for it and tried to install them following the instructions but when it came the time to execute configure.sh it told me that I had to actualize some kind of packets first(GK+ or something like that can't remember ). I also have another wireless usb adapter that I tried to use too. It's a Linksys WUSB54g v4(chipset: rt2570). I tried to follow a guide I found about making run an adapter like that on Wifislax 3.1 but when I had to "Force ralink rt73 on rt2500" it doesn't appear on my Live CD version, it appears "Force ralink rt73 on rt2570", dunno if it has something to be but I get an error while making it.
I don't know if it has to be with my laptop, my wireless adapters or my way of following the steps. If it has to be with my adapters I would like to buy some new one(not very expensive) that I won't have any problems running it on Wifislax and that will work on my old laptop(cause I just have that one and can't afford a new one).
I have a dns server started with 2 NIC Cards in it. The bios sees both cards but they both dont show in ifconfig. is there a way to activate the second card?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI want to add a second monitor to a computer with existing onboard Intel 965 graphics. The Intel graphics work great so i'd prefer adding something old for a second monitor (just to throw some toolbars on it) instead of installing ATI / nV card (which will disable the Intel graphics). I added an old PCI (not PCIe) Cirrus Logic GD 5440 Alpine for the second monitor (so that it won't disable the Intel). This card is capable of 640x480 w/ 256 colors (actually more, but I don't know how much more it will go. It has like 1MiB memory)
Now I set it up like this:

I've currently got the beta of fedora 12 installed, hope to upgrade that once the final release comes out. I'm having so many problems getting wireless to work. I've got a edimax ew-7711utn wireless adaptor. It doesn't work. Really what I want is to take it back and get a wireless card that will work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 9.10. My work requires me to frequently swap video cards between an ATI Radeon 5870 card and an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX card. My question is: can the ATI driver (fglrx - catalyst 10.2) and the NVIDIA driver (nvidia 190.29) co-exist? Or do I need to reinstall the driver every time I change the card? I would like for the drivers to be able to co-exist so it would only be a matter of restarting my machine with the new card and choose the right xorg.conf file (perhaps from the GRUB menu).

My laptop is a Dell XPS 1340, it contains an integrated 9400M, and a discrete G210m. In trying to get vgaswitcheroo working with these cards, it seemed that every time I tried to switch outputs, my computer would freeze.

I'm having a rather hard time getting my 3 monitors setup as one display. I can get all three to work without too much heartburn using 3 separate X instances. The monitors are on 2 different video cards, one dual heads. The other on it's own card.
I've tried countless ways to get this to work, and I'm just not feeling the love. There are 2 17 inch monitors on the 1 video card and then the second video card has a 24 inch monitor on it. I can get the two monitors on one head to work with twinview, but the third one is left out.
The physical configuration looks like this..
17inch on the left of the 24 inch monitor, and another 17 inch monitor on the right, with the 24 inch monitor being in the center.
I'm going to include my current xorg.conf and lspci.

After a PSU and motherboard failure, I'm about to spec out a new PC. The last time I looked, Nvidia was the preferred graphics chipset as they tended to support Linux better than ATI. Is this still the case?[url].... seem to have lots of ATI cards in stock but hardly any Nvidia (despite offering a similar sized range), but I don't want to get an ATI card if it's not preferred for technological reasons (or even FOSS ethical reasons!).

For those of us who were stung last year by ATI's decision to drop support for <= R500 series cards from their closed source, or proprietary driver (known as the FGLRX driver), we are now forced to use the opensource ATI XORG driver. This is not as bad as it sounds, as in doing so, ATI has released a lot of the hardware specs on these older cards and the opensource driver has improved dramatically in the last year as a result.
Ubuntu includes both the ATI and the FGLRX driver install capacities in recent releases (since Intrepid(?)). If one can install the FGLRX driver, you should be able to do this by choosing System>Administration>Hardware Drivers and choosing to activate the ATI drivers; or you can manually install them using this guide: [URL]
However, if you have a card that is or below the R500 series (i.e. not R600+) DO NOT install the FGLRX drivers - you will break your X server (video display). If you don't know what series chipset you have, try the following:

These are fairly easy to remove (as described on the site); just remove the PPA from your Software Sources and downgrade the drivers.
I'm about to start a new build for my primary machine at home. The plan is to load up a server/workstation motherboard (ASUS KGPE-D16) with two 8-core chip, as much RAM as it will take (32GB) and to put two graphics cards in it. One to power my main 24" monitor (ideally via HDMI) and the other card to power two screens, one 24" on each left and right side via DVI (unless I can find a dual-HDMI card that meets my needs).
Does that make sense? Here's my question for this awesome group of intelligent individuals: What video card model should I choose? Obviously, I'd like them to match so I can SLI / CrossFire if I really want to, but what setup should I plan on to have a good experience managing multiple displays on multiple video cards?
Oh, and budget is probably up to about $300 per card, maybe a little more if it makes a lot of sense.I'm not alone in having tons of problems with trying to get multi monitor support in the last few versions of Ubuntu, and honestly it's the only reason why I'm still running Windows7: the multi monitor support is just SO DAMNED easy! 1. I run Suse 11.2 with two sound cards , one HDA comes with motherboard and second is USB, which I use for skype and talking. In YAST everything is fine the motherboard card is marked as prime card and the usb card is marked as second. But often when I log in alsa decides that second card is main and I have to pull out the USB card, run command "rcalsasound restart" and put the USB back afterward. It is a way that to be fixed in the way that alsa remember my choices forever. 2. The other problem is that from time to time the sound suddenly dies and I have to bring it up with rcalsasound restart again.
But I have to admit that their significant improvement with managing sound with PulseAudio.
I am trying to dual boot into Ubuntu and thus far everything works great on my machine. There is one HUGE issue.
I am running 2 Radeon 4870 Cards. Only one adapter will show at a time. I am used to Having 4 monitors and the max amount of Monitors it will allow me to have are two.
It does recognise the Second Adapter when I go into the Catalyst Control (it shows the option for Cross Firing) and it shows both adapters when I do:

The closest I had was that my main two monitors showed the splash page when the other two monitors on the other adapter were displayed. So It did switch once... But I have yet get all four monitors to work.
