Ubuntu :: Force Me To Upgrade Loads Of Things When I Only Want To Upgrade One / Sort It?
Jun 20, 2011
I use joomla and it only works with php5.2
I keep having to downgrade because ubuntu tried to upgrade to php5.3 everytime I try to upgrade something.
For instance, I just upgraded wine and didnt notice php5.3 in there as a dependancy, so now have to downgrade AGAIN!
Is there a way to upgrade wine without upgrading php as well?

I decided to give Ubuntu another try and installed the Studio version. During my installation it asked whether I wanted the Realtime kernel or not. I chose yes as I figured it could come in handy when I work with audio. However since this version isn't exactly Ubuntu 10.10 as promoted , I decided to install Ubuntu Desktop on top of it (trough apt-get). For the full experience. ( im not even sure if it just installed extra software and added some folders)Now my questions are:1:The Realtime kernel is it now overwritten by any other kernel that came with the Desktop installation?
2: How will the updates handle my installation once i want to upgrade to, lets say, 11.04.I'm not really sure about how the system will look at things to upgrade. Will it look at my Desktop installation or my Ubuntu Studio? ( concerning the Realtime kernel as well).Just to add some more: I'm a total Linux Noob(although im not scared to use the Terminal)

So it seems to me like upgrading to the newest 11.04 distro of ubuntu would be a great thing to do, but I've seen quite a few threads about bugs, problems, etc. Is this common? I am new to linux so I am not really sure how things usually work. Does it differ from system to system?

I have a PCI compliance notice sitting here telling me to upgrade to Apache 2.2.17. Thing is, Ubuntu is quite happy sitting on 2.2.16 (Ubuntu).
I understand that the Ubuntu folks' reasoning in rolling security updates back to 2.2.16, but I need to get an automated scan to shut up.

I have recently upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 on a machine which I installed the kubuntu-desktop package onto. After the installation I tried to login to a KDE session and my password is accepted. The login screen disappears before the loading splash screen for KDE appears, however this only stays on the screen for a few seconds before the login screen appears again and the drumbeat sound is played (as if you had just turned it on).
Note that GRUB works fine.
UPD (17:48:10 4/06/2010) I have re-installed plasma-desktop, kubuntu-desktop and kdemain packages and this has only caused a longer delay before the login screen is displayed again.
Please could somebody send me in the right direction to get this fixed. I have attached kdm.log.1 as a txt file as this may help diagnose some errors.

Like so many others, after upgrading 8.04->10.04 LTS, Bluetooth is now busted. I've spent the better part of a day trying to find answers; I've tried many things and the results have not been consistent. I'm not going to write a book here as there are many other posts on the same problem and no real answers other than to complete a fresh install. I CAN do that but I'll have to overcome one bothersome problem:
Bluetooth is an important protocol. Now my (Bluetooth) broadband adapter is busted and I have to try and resolve this issue using a lousy phone line and modem. Needless to say... I can't download a new distro with that configuration. The updates would take weeks!
I suppose I'll have to drive into town and get someone to burn me a copy of 10.04 lts... Hope that works!
I'll think twice (or more) before upgrading an LTS distro again! That machine was working great....I don't know why I upgraded.. security concerns mainly. live and learn I guess... live and learn.

when i got my starling netbook 6 months ago it worked perfectly. due to upgrades since then i now have problems with printing, sound and videos. there are probably solutions to all of these things if i spent hours here on the forum asking questions, and trying different solutions, but it seems like a lot of work.
upgrade manager calls these things "important security upgrades". are they really important to security? would my computer be dangerously vulnerable to attack if i never did an upgrade?

Who has successfully upgraded going from F7 x86_64 to F9 x86_64 using the yum approach? I have had about 0% success getting everything to work correctly doing a fresh install of F9. Everything works correctly in F7( sound, firefox/flash, networking, samba, etc ), so I figure that starting with something know to work and upgrading to F9 might be a better approach that starting with F9 and having it guess.

My knowledge of how Linux works is very limited. I've used it for about a year, but just doing very basic tasks (browsing the Internet, listening to music, etc).
Anyway, I upgraded to the newest edition of Ubuntu and installed the new Grub as the update seemed to recommend installing it to every partition and hard drive. I've seen that other people are now having issues from doing that as well.
I am able to boot into Linux just fine; it is working great. However, when I attempted to load Windows XP from Grub, the computer would just restart. I followed the recommendation listed here: http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/sh...95&postcount=3 which seemed to fix the problem for Windows 7 users. Now, all I get when I attempt to load XP is a blank screen with nothing but a blinking cursor (but hey, at least the computer isn't just automatically re-booting, that's some sort of progress...maybe...)

I beleive I had version 9.x installed. I upgraded once and everything was fine. I went the upgrade manager again and it found some more upgrades. The upgrade messed with grub. It then told me there were no new upgrades. Then I rebooted and it says
Try (hd0,0): NTFS5
Then the screen clears and there is some text I can't read and then it says command not found. Then it reboots.
Is there a way to fix this?
If not is there a way to recover the files from the disk image file.

The only thing I remember being updated is xserver, but I know there were other packages updated.
After the splash screen, a text login is shown. If I do nothing, it goes right to a black screen, but first there are weird red pixels randomly strewn about the screen. If I quickly login via the text screen, it then goes to the same black screen. Either way, there are the weird red pixels and a few flashes of the screen before going black.
This happens 100% of the time.
I have tried:
booting with recovery mode and selecting repair packages (no packages are broken, missing, etc.)
booting with recovery mode and selecting startx with failsafe (same black screen)
booting with older kernels (same thing)

I have a 1.0 ghz G4 eMac running Tiger. Using Ubuntu 10.04's Live-CD I installed 10.04 on a 8-gig USB flash drive and it worked very well despite spending nearly five hours to download its files via DSL and a pokey USB 1.1 port. The flash drive's 10.04 installation worked just fine on my eMac and 900mhz G3 iBook except for Airport wireless non-connecting issues.(I like Ubuntu 10.04 because unlike Mint for PPC, you're not hassled or barred from accessing your Mac HD and its files.) THEN, to resolve my wireless issues, I decided to upgrade to 10.10 which took nearly 12 hours, and it seemed to've installed well until I tried booting the flash drive and it doesn't work. I get the Ubuntu icon in the Startup Disk screen but it keeps returning to it even after I select Ubuntu. The error screen I get reads code...

I keep getting the following msg as I try to upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 ... "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade

I finally got around to upgrading from etch to lenny. After having upgraded, I find that the fonts are extremely small in all gtk applications (iceweasel, abiword, gnumeric, etc.)
Everything looked fine before the upgrade, but now the application fonts in the menu bars, dialogs, etc. are so small as to be unreadable. Also, when I open up gnumeric spreadsheets the fonts in the cells are unreadable. All my X-based applications (rxvt, xfig, xmms, etc.) look just fine, it's just the GTK apps that have the font problems.
Interestingly, web pages themselves render just fine in iceweasel. Also, abiword documents look fine even though the menus, dialogs, etc. are too small to read.
I was able to get a workaround for the application fonts. I put the following in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 code...
At 24 point the fonts are still a bit on the small side, though. And I still have problems reading information in the gnumeric cells.
I use the fvwm window manager without gnome or kde.

My story thus far:I have a working, fairly customized desktop environment running Ubuntu Studio 10.10.Yesterday, I literally wasted the entire day attempting to upgrade to, and then reverting from, Ubuntu Studio 11.04 (never forget to do a grub-install when restoring your system to a previous state from backups).I am not bashing 11.04! That is not the purpose of this thread, although I believe that Unity needs some maturity, and because of this I probably won't upgrade until the next LTS.
What I would like to know is this: Is there a way that I can get the various and sundry upgrade managers to stop telling me about the 11.04 upgrade availability? I'd really like to not see itI feel somewhat like a Luddite every time I do.

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.
