My notification area seems to be loading some things as black squares, mainly my Wifi indicator. when it loads as a black square I cant click on it or use any of its functions etc, will no longer allow me to access my wifi settings from it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter installing the Nvidia driver I get black and white boxes displayed during KDE login. After logging in the graphics are normal. I tried installing the nvidia driver from the opensuse repository and manual installation of the latest stable driver. I do not have this problem when I use Kubuntu so I don't think it's a hardware problem.

I keep having to downgrade because ubuntu tried to upgrade to php5.3 everytime I try to upgrade something.
For instance, I just upgraded wine and didnt notice php5.3 in there as a dependancy, so now have to downgrade AGAIN!
Is there a way to upgrade wine without upgrading php as well?
When I load Ubuntu, it goes to the desktop screen, shows my desktop picture, loads Pidgin which I have set to start on startup, loads Icons, and then the screen goes black. The mouse cursor shows up, I can move it around, and then it goes black again, and the mouse cursor shows up again. This repeats a few times until the cursor freezes. This started happening after I tried fixing a bug with new drivers for my Intel 845gl video card. The instructions I followed are these:

I have tried some of the options in recovery mode from GRUB menu, none really work, except booting with default graphic configuration, or something similar like this.
finally just got ubuntu to install on my emac a1002, I had to use the powerpc version. The install went fine, it restarted and loaded ubuntu, but after it loads goes to a blank black screen. And I imagine it sits there forever, yet I've only left if for about 5mins or so. The emac is from 2003, and has a 1ghz processor (Powerpc) and has 256mb ram.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter entering runlevel 2 and gdm loads, I only get a black screen. I hear a beep that indicates gdm has loaded, but everything stays black. Trying to switch to a console using ctrl-alt-f1 does absolutely nothing.
At one point, I disabled gdm from starting in runlevel 2, and rebooted. I then typed into tty2 "sleep 60 ; reboot" and in tty1 "gdm" and hoped for a reboot if the graphical login didn't appear. No reboot occurred, my black screen remained.
I've issued acpi=off at kernel command line (from grub) and disabled all acpi services. That seemed to work for a few hours but now I get the black screen again every time. There's no option in the BIOS to switch from acpi to apm, so I've done all I can do on the software side of things.

I have a bad problem with debian 5.0 . I have installed it all right with no fail or error and when it boots,i just see a black screen with nothing else. My graphic card : Nvidia 9500M gs. I tried ubuntu,fodero but both of them were same after installing debian (Before i didn't have this problem)
View 3 Replies View Relatedjust installed ubuntu on my win 7 laptop using the wubi.. after the install it said restart,so i restatred and booted up ubuntu which went sound,it then says finishing installation.. ubuntu comes up does the partions then started copying files then once it had done this the screen went black with loads of writing on it..it seems to just stay like this.. i left it 30 mins the restarted laptop again..laptop working sound booted ubuntu again and the same thing happened..
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu on my desktop - works great. The problem is I am trying to install it on my laptop. I have the image burned, and it's booting off my cd rom just fine. The problem comes after that. It goes to the ubuntu loading screen for a pretty long time, then after that the screen scrambles in random black and white box type things, at which point I get no response unless I hit the power button at which point a linux screen pops up and tells me it's waiting for programs to close, then boots down.

Open Office opens and I can read text fine. Is there a fix for this and has it happened to anyone else- I found an old thread but it did not have a reply that was a fix.
View 6 Replies View RelatedYesterday, while surfing a web forum with ~6 tabs open and music playing, I noticed that the top of my Firefox window, next to the minimize/restore/close buttons, was displaying the wrong name. It was displaying my second tab while I was on my fourth, for example, and this error continued even as I switched tabs, picking a tab for the name at seemingly random. The menu bar next to the "click here to hide all windows and show the desktop" button continued to show the right name, however. Within a minute or so, the browser started to hang, my computer started to slow, and the top of the browser became entirely obscured. I was eventually forced to power down the computer by use of the power button, as I was unable to access the shut-down menu.Upon booting up again, I noticed that the computer took longer to get to log-in. Once I did log in, I noticed that the text at the top of the window now consisted entirely of squares, with about as many squares as there would be proper characters normally. Furthermore, this had spread to other aspects of my system. I have all current updates.
Examples (attached pictures should illustrate):
- When in the File Manager, there are tabs that show your movement through the system; for example, if I start by opening Home, then Pictures, it'll show my Home folder and Pictures there. The currently-selected tab has the erroneous display of squares, but the non-selected ones do not.
- The shutdown menu has squares where the names of the individual options should be and at the top window, but the descriptive text below continues to function normally.
- The update manager has squares at the top line of the "loading" prompt, the top line next to the update manager icon (just above "The package information was last updated X hours ago"), and the name of each individual update consists of squares, in addition to the text just below "changes for the versions: 2.2... etc" text but above the changelog.
- The "Users Settings" options menu has squares at various areas, such as the name of the user, account type, and password. (The area with the name and colon, such as "Password:" is correct, but the area after the colon is all squares.)
- Black box system notifications - for example, the name of the wireless to which I have just connected - have the first line made into squares.
- Authentication prompts - for the package manager or update manager, for example - have the first line as squares, but the second works normally.
- The package manager seems completely fine, other than the aspects of it previously mentioned that extend to other applications (the name area at the top of the window, the authentication prompts).
(Looking back, I actually meant "rectangles" when I said "squares." Oops; apologies for any confusion caused.)It seems obvious that SOMETHING has become corrupted, but I'm not educated enough on the subject to identify and solve the problem, or to know much of the standard procedure for this sort of situation.
I reinstalled Ubuntu after a disastrous install of gnome 3. I installed the mscore fonts etc. When I select a ms true type font I just see a row of squares instead of letters

the 0003 is when I pressed Ctrl+C, and the 001A is when I pressed ctrl+z.Can anybody tell me why this is or how to turn it off. I am using a VRS for ftp operations. I have bought it with OpenSuSe 11.3 installed without any Control Panel installed. I have used NX and installed IceWM as windows manager. It works really great. Then system wanted me to upgrade. I did so. After upgrade to 11.4, my programs screwed up. They don't show any text at all but squares instead. I have tried everything i know to fix this but i could not manage to repair it.
My VRS has 512mb RAM , OpenSuse 11.4 (32-Bit) and has no control panel. I use yast through SSH Telnet client (Putty).
is there a possibility to remove the ugly "squares"-effect, when minimizing a window by using no desktop-effects?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed opensuse11.4 few minutes back. The install was absolutely smooth. I have dual boot, Win Xp and 11.4 now. But for some reason I do not see the login screen but instead I see a green screen with squares and stripes. Login in the failsafe mode is successful. How do I fix it?
Also noticed the following,
1) Initially the splash screen picks up the right resolution 1024*768 and then it changes it to a higher resolution. This I think I can fix, because I had faced a similar problem with 11.3 as well.

I updated through the update manager the other day and after I shut my computer down and turned it back on the next day, all my icons on my desktop disappeared and I can't access my files or my applications. It gives me this error when trying to access my files in my desktop.
Could not open location 'file:///home/anubis/Desktop'
No application is registered as handling this file.
I posted a new thread about this the other day and somehow the thread disappeared too. what do I need to do?
I just recently upgraded to Ubunutu beta 10.10, & now whenever I minimize anything, I cannot find where said program is going to. The programs do not appear anywhere, like before where they were on the bottom panel or whatever.

Just all the borders, menus and stuff look horrible.
It scrolls jerky and sometime wont stop scrolling even after i only pushed the up or down arrow one time. it freezes up and take minuets to switch tabs or post to sites etc.Could this be a video driver issue? Or a Firefox issue? I am running Ubuntu 9.10 latest patches on and IBM R51

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I (try) to upload files to Ubuntu One; generally, the upload doesn't happen. What does happen is [on] the bottom panel says: "Sending request to files.one.ubuntu.com . . ." It may sit there like that for hours without an upload happening. Once, I left my computer on and left for a couple of days; when I got back it had uploaded. Is this the norm? Is there something wrong on my end (other than PBKAC)? What can I do to speed things up? Or can they be speeded up? Is the description of Ubuntu One one thing and the reality something else?

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I wanted to customise it a little (splash screen, login screen, window theme) - problem is, all of the tuts on the net have been written for 9.xx or lower and none of them seem to work with the version that I am running (I can't remember why right now because I looked this up a few days ago but there was a tab missing in 10.04 that was there in 9.xx and below). how to customise these things running Ubuntu 10.04?
View 9 Replies View Relatedthis is totally weird and i have no idea what's happening. i have a 64bit ubuntu 10.10 (just like the title says). i've been having random (really out of the blue) slow ubuntu response. so slow, the mouse pointer works stops works kinda thing. i can't open any program and clicking the power button doesn't work. i have to hard restart it (holding down the power for a couple of sec). this is really making me mad since i'm afraid for my hardware life and to be honest - not very impressed with ubuntu.
i have no idea why this happens and i really need help on this subject, otherwise i'd just have to look for another OS (and i would like not to) also - the computer is new so i don't think it's a hardware problem, but if there are tests i can do to check it i wouldn't mind
