I'm running ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 here is the error I get every time I try to use update manager to update
Have received errors the last two times I've run Update Manager. This one says: Package Operation Failed

subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 The last error said something about "Max Reports". What I can't tell is whether the updates actually installed.
Using 11.0 64bit OpenSuse. I was updating this workstation. Everything was working good. I rebooted from the last set of updates and now I am trying to access the Package Manager from yast, but it is not working now. It starts up, then it goes to an "Initializing", then a popup says that "Accessing the Package Manager Failed". It also notes that something else is using the package manager, then gives me choice to either continue or retry.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem when installing this package through synaptic package manager. this is :
libpng12-dev
the error is:
W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/po...tu2.1_i386.deb
404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.167 80]
my distribution is ubuntu 10.4.
It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
Software center, update manager, Synaptic package manager crashes for no reason. I have not done any recent changes or downloads. I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04

I want to install CmapTools in my desktop, which runs v.10.04. I have downloaded the .bin file from their site.Is there a way to install it using Synaptic Package Manager?

Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

2. Seems like randomly the checkbox for treat recommended packages as dependencies turns true. It has seemed that way for at least a year.
I only have shell access to one of my boxes so I need to know how I can I stop a package from being upgraded from the terminal.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHaving trouble figuring this out. I've got a package that I've installed from out-of-repos and Kubuntu feels the need to "upgrade" this package to a version that I do not want to use. I've found out how to do this in Ubuntu, but not in Kubuntu. A commandline solution would be fine, although I've googled it and not come up with any working results.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently tried to upgrade to 10.04 but during the upgrade my powerpack failed. Now 10.04 has been installed but I cannot access Synaptic through the drop down menu it says "Unable to get an exclusive lock". I've tried accessing it through Terminal which works but then the only option I have is to Partial Upgrade but then that freezes at the first stage saying the old database can't access the new (or something along those lines) then that screen just remains there. Also when I minimise any windows I have open they don't appear at the bottom of the screen I have to go to multi screen to find them.

I'm trying to lock an account after a number of failed login attempts in a RHEL5.
This is the relevant configuration in /etc/pam.d/system-auth
In the logs I can see how the count of failed logins increase and exceeds my deny option but the account isn't locked
Do I need any other option in the PAM file? Is there any other way to lock an account?

I found another thread similar to my question here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-issue-535818/
But I don't understand what the solution is. I believe this has something to do with the permissions on the directory im trying to check out so I did chmod 777 on subdirectory in /cvs(my cvsroot directory) and I was able to checkout subdirectory afterwards, but I still get the same error.
I'm fairly decent Linux admin (ok, i've been paid to do it for the last 10 years now, maybe better than fair), however this problem has me stumped. Ever since i dist-upgraded to 10.10 playing flash videos longer than a minute will *sometimes* lock up my window manager. I am unable to click on other windows, or links in current window. If i open a terminal after starting the video i can still run commands in the terminal after its locked up, but not use the mouse in any form at all.
I can get to tty1 or any other console, kill flash, kill the browser, etc. Until i restart gdm or kdm it is still locked up however. I have tested with both kde and gnome. Tested with kdm and gdm. Tested with firefox and chrome (both use different installs of flash plugin - chrome brings its own). I created a new user on the system to test enviroment, no luck there. I eventually reinstalled yesterday with a fresh 10.10, and still I am having this problem. It *often* happens, but not always. Always on videos longer than about a minute at a guess, i have not timed it. Only ever happens on flash videos - ie ..... etc.
