I just install Ubuntu OS 11.04 recently to my HP Mini 110 netbook. When I try to display on my external 20inch samsung monitor. I get the black borders as shown on the pic. Resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher will cause the problem whereas lower resolution will not have that black border.
View 2 RepliesI am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.

Just did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.
I have an Asus z9100 laptop with an Intel 855GM integrated graphics chip, which is running Karmic (the purpose of the laptop is to be a MythTV frontend so my understanding is that it needs to run 9.x in order to connect to the MythTV 0.22 backend - I have installed and configured this using the installable Mythbuntu package) and the laptop is subject to this bug which causes random freezes:

So, following advice for similar freezes I've seen, I have added the following options to my grub menu.lst on the kernel line:
nolapic nomodeset
and I have edited xorg.conf so that it makes use of the vesa driver instead of the Intel driver. This results in no freezes and if I wanted to watch Myth on the laptop screen I'd be squared away. However, the laptop has a damaged screen so the point was always to output the signal to an external monitor via its VGA out.
When I attach the external monitor and boot with the setup as described, the external monitor is never detected. But I noticed that if I remove the "nolapic nomodeset" from the kernel boot line, it is detected. However, signal is only output to it during the earliest part of boot (when the Ubuntu logo is in the center of the screen before the full-screen graphic with the animated progress line), after which the external monitor goes black and all the display output goes to the laptop screen. The external monitor power button is still lit up green as if it has been detected and is receiving signal, but it's just a black screen.

I have an issue with my ATI 5800 card. Installation was flawless (dual boot with Windows 7 64 bit with all updates installed. Upon reboot, I have a black border around the entire Desktop. My screen resolution is set to maximum.Being new to all this, I am somewhat perplexed how the ATI Catalyst Control Center works.In Windows 7, this is the Scaling Option in the Catalyst Control Center which can easily rectify the situation. I have verified that the Catalyst Control Center is installed but I have no idea how to proceed to fix this.I have been searching Google for two days with no luck - lots of suggestions, but no fix. Can someone point me in the right direction as I would like to learn and understand how to use this OS.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI run Natty 64x (new install) and have setup to use two seperate x servers and no xinerama. When I start my computer everything seems fine on both monitors but once desktop is loaded and I start an app in the second monitor, I can't type anything and the window borders are missing. If I type "DISPLAY:=0.1 metacity" the problem gets fixed but I get an error that a window manager is running already.
I have AMD/Nvidia, GeForce 8800GT.
Firefox & MySQL admin have black line borders. The tab, address input box, the search box, the scroll bars, and the dropdown menu area have this black line border. MySQL's admin utility displays the same. Can't figure out where to change it. Also other thread is about Desktop-Settings utility crashes. Should I just do a restore of user install defaults? How would I do that and save some of my desktop custom program icons?

My problem is that my system does not seem to be detecting an external monitor that I have connected. Everything else is working just fine; however, I would like to have the option of attaching an external monitor. When I plug the external monitor into the laptop, the external monitor remains black and appears to be in power save mode. The results of xrandr -q (with or without the external monitor attached: it doesn't appear to change) are as follows.

I recently installed Debian, using the amd64 Network Install .iso. I'm using XFCE4 as my desktop environment, and everything is working well... on my laptop's screen.
My desired setup is to have my laptop sitting on a well-ventilated shelf, closed, and to have an external monitor be my main monitor. I want this because I'm using my laptop as my "home" computer, so it never moves, and I don't like the keyboard/trackpad. My laptop has a VGA output, and I can get my desired setup on my Windows partition (not stating a preference ; just that the hardware CAN do what I want it to).
I've been working my way around the Internet for a few days, now, and I've got the commercial NVIDIA driver installed. If I run sudo nvidia-config --twinview I can get my external monitor to be part of the display, which is great, but it's part of a dual-screen monitor setup, which is not what I want at all, because (a) XFCE's multiple virtual desktops are good enough for me and (b) my graphics card is integrated, and I'm trying to squeeze every drop of performance out of my laptop that I can (1 gig of RAM; the less that my graphics card eats into it, the better). Plus, it'd be annoying to accidentally drop something on my laptop's screen, and then have to dig it out of the shelf in order to undo it. I'm not saying that I'm consistently clumsy, but I'd eventually end up doing it.
I start the pc then it comes the Normal Start Ubuntu page, where you can log by the username and password. I insert them then the monitor became black and then it comes again the ubuntu log page. I tried to remove the nvidia driver but the only thing that change is that now ubuntu starts in Reduce Graphic Modality

View 6 Replies View Relatedi tried to install linux mint, at first i got 'out of range' with black screen msg but used compability mode and got past it and installed mint on my HD. a moment after it updated my nvidia drivers and after reboot I got the out of range message again, which leaves me in the situation where i cant do pretty much anything I tried editing xorg.conf added VertRefresh 60-75 and Modes "1440x900_75.00"
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM chipset. As I was playing around, trying to figure out how to get my dual monitor to work. The Mirror Screen was working fine, but then I uncheck the mirror screen option, both my laptop and my secondary monitor black out. I can only see the mouse, and it cans move on both screen.

I have this very frustrating problem... I'm trying to build a Linux-based HTPC (Home Theatre PC). I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty as the operating system, and it works fine when I have it connected to my 17" Samsung monitor. However, when I connect the HTPC to the TV via VGA I get a black screen after "startx" (I can access the console through recovery mode though). Ubuntu is running gnome, so I guess it's a gnome related problem?
I would have thought it was a problem with the drivers to graphics card, but since it's working on my 17" monitor I've ruled that out. The TVs resolution is 1024x768. What can be causing this? Apperently there's some difference between my monitor and my TV (forgetting the fact that it is indeed a TV, not a monitor), but what? I've previously run Windows on the same hardware without problems, and thought I should give Linux a shot. It doesn't look good...
i have my pc connected to my 24 inch lcd monitor via DVI and my laptop via VGA. i noticed ubuntu is slightly more blurry than the pc. would the difference likely stem from the manner of connection or faulty drivers on ubuntu's behalf?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI did a LiveCD to USB install, following the directions I found at [url] When I went to reboot to the USB stick, all I get is a black Screen (monitor is on and lit, just nothing on the display) No cursor or command prompt. I've tried holding shift to bring up the GRUB menu, changing splash quiet to nomodeset, or just adding nomodeset after the splash quiet thing. I've even tried xforcevesa instead of nomodeset still black screen. Looking at the logs nothing is current as of the last time I tried to boot the computer, it's strictly what was written when I installed it to the stick. Other things I've checked/tried, Pressing CTRL+Alt+F1 at GRUB to get TTY, all I get is that blank screen. I've Checked etc/default/grub to ensure the timeout was higher then 0. The Install CD seems to be OK but I have (as it did another install successfully) but I haven't done any throughal checking of it (there was no check this disk on the first screen of the LiveCD) The USB sticks also seem to be ok (in windows though). Using the disk utility on the live CD I did check the file system on the USB stick, the "/" partition came up clean. Anybody have any other thoughts on this install, any thing else I can check?
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy experience with external monitors in Linux is harrying at best. It's getting better, but it still ain't perfect. My current experience (I have an nVidia card, with nVidia drivers, on a Vostro laptop):
Turn on computer (booting Karmic).
Connect external monitor
Click on System->Preferences->Display
Redirect to nVidia's tool
Perform at least 8 more clicks to enable secondary monitor.
Realize resolution isn't optimal and set it with another few clicks.
Click Apply
Accept changes
Quit, then really quit, the app.
I always have to set the resolution, it doesn't detect it automatically. The main screen is *always* on the external monitor no matter my settings. I'm screwed if I unplug the monitor but forget to go through steps 1-8, this time disabling the external monitor. I have to replug it in, then turn it off, then I can unplug it. If I unplug the external monitor and plug in another one (going through steps 1-8 twice more) with different resolution capabilities (e.g. a projector), the settings get all messed up again.
Why can't adding an external monitor be automatic? It nearly is on OS X for instance. I plug it in, and it automatically detects the monitor and makes it a secondary monitor, or mirrors them, or turns it on and turns off the laptop screen. All the while being consistent about it. When I unplug the monitor, it knows instantly that I've done that, and reconfigures the laptop screen once again.
I imagine the answer is because no one has stepped up to do it yet, or it's in progress. So my question: what *is* the state of external monitor codes in Linux, and are there any plans to implement them in Lucid? Further, what would be a project, with *user friendly* context, to which I could tune in?
Or, am I not aware of the "right way" to do it?
I define user friendly as roughly the level of kernelnewbies.org . That is, kn.org is my gauge of what I can understand.
I am using a Asus UL30A laptop computer. I just performed an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. I remember running into this problem before, but I forgot how to fix it. The problem is, when I plug my laptop into the external monitor with my laptop screen turned off automatically when I first log in, I do not see the mouse cursor on the external monitor! The mouse cursor is still here, although invisible - if I do a right-click, the property menu will come up. My current workaround is simple- if I switch to the next workspace (by pressing Ctrl-Alt-right arrow), the cursor will appear from then on.

The External gets no signal and the laptop display is used on the login page. Is there any way of having the login page and possibly startup displayed on the external at all times for all accounts.

I have a Hp dv5000 Laptop (not that it matters) with ATI 200M graphics chip and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Compiz works perfectly on my laptop screen. But when using my 23" Monitor it just doesn't. If I try enabling desktop effects it tells me it can't. Through terminal ( runnning 'compiz')I get the following error:

I have an external monitor at work, but not at home. I take my laptop home and when I come back the settings are off. My monitor is above my laptop, so I have to rearrage displays and save every time its plugged in. Isn't there a system file or something somewhere that I can write to and save the current state as the default?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my Ubuntu V10.4 LTS to Ubuntu 11. After that, I lost my external monitor and I cannot find those usual "preferences", "Administration" navigational menus on top of the screen.
Stumbled into Multiple Monitors under System, but it didn't detect the second monitor. However, the 2nd monitor was active and with system startup messages displayed there during reboot. But as soon as the desktop appear, that 2nd monitor lost its signal.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Macbook 3,1 late 2007. I have an HP paviilon f1703 external monitor that I would like to use as the main screen to load the full resolution GUI without using the laptop monitor at all. I've done several Google searches and tried several remedies, and I'm either doing them totally wrong (which is very very possible because I'm such a newb), their out of date, or their just not working for me.

(somehow I knew that something is going to go wrong), and now my PC starts, works fine for a few seconds, then I get a black screen for a moment, and then my monitor starts acting like PC is off.Interestingly I think that otherwise everything is working just fine and that I just can't see anything due to the black screen (monitor is flashing like there is no signal coming from PC).

In nvidia-settings I am able to enable my second monitor and enable it/set it's position..etc. My second monitor is not being detected in Debian Display and is 'on' but only showing a black screen. I've tried researching and implementing various 'fixes', but I'm not having any luck.
I'm running dual GTX 570's with a monitor plugged into one each (DVI). I noticed in my xorg.conf under Section "Screen" I have an option "MultiGPU" "Off"; would this be part of the issue?
I've tried:
- purging all nvidia drivers and re-installing
- installing different versions of nvidia drivers
- add nomodeset in grub
I got a used Gateway Solo 9550 from a friend. It was running windows when I got it. So I decided to try to test Debian on it. I am relatively new to the Linux scene so I have had a few issues with no idea how to fix them. The biggest one is video. I can get it the laptop to boot up in recovery mode and have nomodeset enabled. With nomodeset in gnome it will work for approx. 20-30 seconds, and then the screen will turn white then to black and then slowly turn rainbow. I know that its not a monitor problem because I ran DSL and DSLN on the same rig, but when I plugin an external monitor its fine on the external but not on the internal.

How can I detect when an external monitor is connected in linux? I need to run various scripts to set up my workspace. Is there some clever way to kick off a script when the monitor state has changed? I'm using the Nvidia display driver.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus eee901 netbook and it's got an Intel 945 graphics card. If I boot it up, log in, attach an external monitor and then open the Display Settings dialog the screen goes black and the laptop appears to crash. Leaving it for a minute or two does nothing.
However, if I boot up with the external monitor attached then I can open the Display Settings dialog and configure both screens.
This is quite annoying as I've got to reboot if I want to connect an external monitor.
Additionally, if booted with the monitor attached and I choose a configuration where the width of the combined screens is greater than 2048, the screens go black and the same lock up appears to occur. Could it be that the Display Settings dialog isn't checking for the maximum display width the driver supports and is then crashing in both scenarios?
