why I am getting this error?
I tossed a 500GB hard drive into my machine (Ubuntu 64 8.10) so that I could back some files up. This drive when last used was part of a software RAID (no longer in use.) I deleted the partition that was on it, and tried to reformat using Gparted to ext3...but it won't work. The only error message I get is that it failed. Details do not provide any additional information. I went to the command line and attempted to mount it just to see what would happen, and I got this:
Code:
~$ sudo mount /dev/sde1 /media/backup1
mount: unknown filesystem type 'linux_raid_member'
Apparently, it still thinks it's part of the RAID. What can I do to erase and reformat this drive?
How do you format an external harddrive to ext4 or ntfs?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to boot up linux on a SATA drive. The SATA drive already had some other linux. I 'fdisk' the SATA drive and cleared all partitions. Now tried to CD boot with linux, it copied over to the SATA drive, however, when i tried to boot from harddrive, it gave me a GRUB Error 22. Why does this happen ? Shouldnt the linux have created its own partition ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedVista refused to boot past login and eventually froze up in safe mode, preventing me from even safely copying files to a storage device. My friend suggested trying Ubuntu temporarily, and I'm currently running it as a trial from a key thob.I'm very much a newbie to the OS but after some getting used to and playing around over a few days Im happy to make the switch permanently. I managed to take off the needed files, and then went on to do some cleaning up of my harddrive to make some room for a partition for Ubuntu. I was removing things like old music, videos and games, nothing vital, but after I reset I tried to enter the C drive Im given this message:

I was running 11.0 and it stalled in the middle of a number of updates. On reboot I now get (if I remember correctly) Error 15: File not found.I managed to get my hands on a 11.0 live cd and started trying to fix grub. However, when I try mounting the harddrive using "mount /dev/sda1" I got

In a c program the value of an integer variable is changing rapidly. I have to get the value of that variable at a particular instant from another program.
How can i do it without using a file?
When i tried with extern variable as
I execute the both .c file from 2 terminals but got only value 0 printed for both var_a and var_b all the time.
I know, it's a common Problem but I just can get it right. Im pretty new on Linux and some Commands confuses me a lot. Though, I managed to made me a root account to read any files on both HD. But I still cant write on the external HFS+ formatted HD. ReadOnly Filesystem. I cant set up an internet connection in order to install files. Is there some workaround?

I'm still trying to find out if my coby mp3 player will actually play mtv video files as is advertised.
ffmpeg -formats does list mtv but the only command I really ever used was one to convert a vid to an mp3 so I tried Code: ffmpeg -i test.mp4 -acodec copy output.mtv it returns Code: Unable to find a suitable output format for 'output.mtv' I can't find any mtv files online for purchase or free for that matter, so I know this is all pretty obscure but shouldn't there be a way to convert them since ffmpeg lists mtv format?
I have a shared library (built from C++ code) and a separate C program which calls (extern) functions from the said library.
Also one of the functions in that library needs to call a function in this C program by declaring it 'extern'. This sort of creates a cyclic dependency.
I am getting "unresolved references" error, as expected.
I got a Fat32 Extern Hard Drive and I would like to do a defrag and a scandisk on it with fsck? Can any one tell me what is the command to do it? I could not find it on google,
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to solve this problem for DAYS now, without any progress. I've searched the forums for a long time before even starting this thread. So now I need help, PLEASE. I don't want to have to use WINDOWS in order to sync my phone with my computer, that's crap and there has to be a way. I have Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to sync my LG Versa VX960V07. When I plugged it in to begin with, it was set on Auto-Sync Music, and the phone showed that it was connecting to the computer. I set it on Data-Sync and nothing happened when I plugged it in. I set it to Ask on Plug-in, and again nothing happens, and the box on my phone that says "Sync Data; Sync Music" does not pop up like it does when using windows.
First I tried installing a bunch of different music programs, Songbird, Amarok, K3B, etc and none of them work with my phone. I can't even install the MTP add-on for songbird, it's not supported under linux. Then I tried sudo apt-get install mtp-tools, which worked. Then MTP-detect, which showed no device. I also tried the command for searching for drives attached. And it did not show a USB drive attached. My computer simply does not detect my phone.
Then I tried this:

Installing BitPim, which does not support the LG Versa, but the new 1.0.7 testing branch does. So I followed the tutorial on that page, installing Alien and trying to convert the RPM to DEB. I don't even know what these commands mean, I'm not a linux Guru, but I'm learning. I tried everything and spent like 3 hours going through this tutorial to no avail. Is it suppose to create a .deb file where the RPM is? If so it doesn't work, and it won't launch BitPim for me. I have no idea what's going on. When I try:
sudo alien -ic ~/Downloads/bitpim-1.0.7.20090805-0.i386.rpm
I get:
error: incorrect format: unknown tag
dpkg --no-force-overwrite -i bitpim_1.0.7.20090805-1_i386.deb

The "error" I get, I don't know what it means, but either way, this isn't working. I'm getting so frustrated with this and the forums are my last hope before I install Windows again. I really don't want to admit defeat and use windblows.
I move from Win to SUSE. I install Suse 11 on notebook with pluged extern monitor, but when i un-plug this monitor then no screen is visible - only black screen. In "failsave" it works but in normal ee :-(and I tryed clone screen- nothing) SUSE detect only ext monitor. Manual settings of resolution is not working.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've searched all over the internet and have found numerous threads on this topic, none of which have helped me fix the problem. I'll post as much info I can about my setup.I have 3 hard drives... one is for ubuntu (9.10), one is for my data, and one is for Windows7. It looks like this:

I've been googling all afternoon to fix this error I get. The situation is as follows: I have multiple harddrives (3x320gb and 1x160gb) all on the SATA interface. One of these drives contains Windows, and the rest I use for programs and downloads. I've installed Ubuntu 9.04 from a USB-stick using the installer's partitioner to make some room for Ubuntu (Ext4 filesystem). I've tried Ubuntu and SUSE in the past.

After coming home one evening I found my server was turned off. My suspicions lead me to believe we had a storm and the power went off, then the UPS went off and finally at that point the server went off too. I think my server was set to allow security updates. After it turned of and restarted it seems it made a change to Grub and upgraded it to Grub2. In doing so I now get the following message:

Just ran into a problem involving mdadm, a disk which had been in a raid array, and an attempt to reformat. Basically, I went to reformat some partitions which had been in raid, and one of them threw the error andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb5 mke2fs 1.41.11 (14-Mar-2010) /dev/sdb5 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! An attempt to umount revealed it was not mounted. lvdisplay and fuser did not reveal anything to me, so I just started looking around. I was graphically navigating /dev and noticed a /dev/md_d0 which did not look like /dev/md_d1 etc (it was missing a little arrow). I had not seen this notation before (my raid was md0), but figured it couldn't hurt to try stopping it.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --detail /dev/md_d0
mdadm: md device /dev/md_d0 does not appear to be active.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md_d0
mdadm: stopped /dev/md_d0
After this, the partition formatted fine! I saw a lot of instructions including zeroing the partition and removing a logical volume, but the above was the only thing which worked for me! Just posted it in case it helps someone else. I know I've not been terribly technical!
Installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it works very well except I cant format cd or dvds. I am using the disk utility program in administration and keep getting the following error:

I have tried mounting and unmounting - makes no difference.
