OpenSUSE Multimedia :: DVDStyler Error: Cannot Open Output Format
Jul 16, 2011
openSUSE 11.3 32bit with repos OSS, NON-OSS and Packman + libdvdcss I installed DVDStyler from Packman and as it seems I can't get it to work. When I create a project for PAL, 4:3 with AC3 and finally click "Burn" and select "just generate" to create files for burning I get:
Code:
DVDStyler v1.8.3
Linux 2.6.34.8-0.2-desktop i686
FFmpeg: libavformat 53.4.0, libavcodec 53.7.0, libavutil 51.9.1

I'm still trying to find out if my coby mp3 player will actually play mtv video files as is advertised.
ffmpeg -formats does list mtv but the only command I really ever used was one to convert a vid to an mp3 so I tried Code: ffmpeg -i test.mp4 -acodec copy output.mtv it returns Code: Unable to find a suitable output format for 'output.mtv' I can't find any mtv files online for purchase or free for that matter, so I know this is all pretty obscure but shouldn't there be a way to convert them since ffmpeg lists mtv format?

I'm flooded with online information and am looking for some concise advice For all of you who are familiar with Avidemux: The program offers an abundance of video output formats (MPEG-2, MPEG-4.AVC, MPEG-4.ASP (lavc), MPEG-4 (xvid), H.263). Which format would you recommend for storing home videos, with regard to (a) being able to view them easily on different PC platforms, and to (b) being able to view them still in n > 5 years from now?

I'm trying to create a DVD, I'm using DVDStyler 1.7.2 on Jaunty. The problem I'm having is that whenever I try to burn or make an ISO image, it crashes. Usually at the "Create menu mpeg" line on the Generate DVD dialog.

I just received a 1TB external(Western Digital) hard drive(NTFS) for backup purposes. I'm using an Ubuntu Live CD, and an external hard drive dock. I am transferring over esata and am receiving the error:
Code:
Cannot open file: input/output error
Seems strange that it said "open". At any rate only about 60 of the 200+ GB were able to be transferred over...this won't do. I have tried to copy via CLI using
Code:
cp -r
and received the same issue. For clarification I am attempting to transfer from a mounted partition onto the mounted external.

prompt$sox mix2.wav soundstrack.mp3 sox FAIL formats: can't open output file `soundstrack.mp3': SoX was compiled without MP3 encoding support so i have seen a lot of other posts about this issue but none had an answer for me. i've run sox on numerous other mac and linux machines and never had a problem with .mp3 stuff provided i have lame and libmad installed. but on my current machine (ubunut 10.10) i can't seem to get sox to do anything with .mp3 despite having lame installed, reinstalling sox, etc.

I use the growisofs command from the terminal to do most of my burning. Mostly because i burn almost the exact same type of file every time so its pretty easy to set up. I've done this dozens of times and never once had a problem before. I loved it because it was so much simpler than doing this in windows where i would need to install a few extra programs and codecs. That was up until today where it started failing every single time i tried to burn something.
For some reason every time i try to burn a disc it gives me this error message:
Code:
I'm really at a loss as to why this is happening. Every thread i found that discussed this problem was mostly focused on k3b or brasero and never really answered the question. As far as i know nothing has been updated since the last time i burned a disc a few days ago. Everything is exactly the same as it was when it worked. The only thing i could think of that might have caused this sudden failure is that i flashed the firmware of another cd drive using the same sata port that this drive is currently plugged into, but that was in windows so i dont see how it could have affected this drive.

I've had CMUS installed for a while, and I haven't had any problems until today. After I initiate it, I'm given the error:
Code:
Error: selecting output plugin '': no such plugin
After some searching, I tried the "set output_plugin=" command with several arguments, but each time it tells me the same original error, only with 'oss' or 'alsa' instead of ''.
I also tried "cmus --plugins," and the only output plugin listed oss under output plugins. How do I configure CMUS so that it works?

$cat /dev/sr0 > nameofdisk.iso
I get the following error
cat: /dev/sr0: Input/output error
I already checked and my optical drive is indeed /dev/sr0. I've hunted google a few hours trying to figure it out. Does anyone know why I'd be getting this error?

Ran into something weird. I was trying to watch a .mkv file in 720p format last night in VLC. Now, for about 10 minutes everything is fine and then the sound just stops. Video play is fine, but audio just cuts out. These hasn't happened with anything else other than this .mkv file. Would the fact I'm running gnome 3 using the open source drivers on my ati 5850 have anything to do with this? Or maybe something else? Anyone run into an issue like this?

Can I ask for some advice in converting a video (from my phone) which is a 3gp file into something more universal. I use audokonverter for audio files and this gives me a menu right-click option to convert a song from (say) wav to mp3. Is there an equivalent for videos? I am using opensuse 11.4 64 bit and have mplayer, xine and vlc installed plus the necessary codecs. Or is it simpler to use ffmpeg in a c/l environment

On inspection I find that my collection of video files is a mixture of .flv and .mp4 formats. The latter play OK on my A110 network media player but the latter do not. There is no sound from either but I think that is another problem as VLC works well on all of them.
My question assuming I cannot get the media player to play .flv files is should I convert to mp4 and will the HD files suffer as a result? If it is OK to convert, which program to use. My system is openSUSE 11.4 with KDE desktop.

I have a few ogg files that I want to put on my phone. My phone doesn't play oggs, so I need to convert. It's just an audiobook so I really don't care about quality. Oddly, nothing I try seems to be up to the task. Here's what I tried so far:
sox my.ogg my.mp3: "sox FAIL formats: can't open output file `x.mp3': SoX was compiled without MP3 encoding support" mencoder: wants video too?? Wha?? vlc (from GUI): "p, li { white-space: pre-wrapStreaming / Transcoding failed: It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3. If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution.
This is not an error inside VLC media player. Do not contact the VideoLAN project about this issue." lame my.ogg my.mp3: "sorry, vorbis support in LAME is deprecated." audicity (via GUI): success..but I'm now going to have to somehow script it. This is very annoying. It makes me want to rip directly into mp3 from now on. Is there an easy way to convert an ogg file to an mp3 from the command-line?

I have a problem with loading the powersaving kernel module p4-clockmod.ko. When I try inserting the module (via modprobe or insmod) I get FATAL: Error inserting p4_clockmod (/lib/modules/2.6.31.8-mediaserver/extra/p4-clockmod.ko): Invalid module format The module has been compiled together with the kernel. Other modules load with no problem at all. I've tried recompiling the kernel (after re-installing the sources, make xconfig from scratch) - no avail. There's only one kernel source package installed. Searching the forum and google didn't yield a helping answer.

In Unix
Code:
ls -ltr | awk '{print $9}'
In linux output is something similar to
Code:

According to above output nothing will be displayed for
Code:
ls -ltr | awk '{print $9}'
ls -ltr | awk '{print $8}' will give test as ouptut in Linux.

I have my original test version of sled11 which I installed when it was first released. I managed to install the required files for multimedia formats and everything works fine. The system has updated as updates have been released via the evaluation update code quite happily. I liked it and decided to get a sled11 license and install on my main workstation. About a month has passed since the test install and my fresh licensed install and I accepted all the updates on install. When I install the multimedia apps, only kaffeine will read multimedia dvds. Nautilus, brasero and totem say it is a restricted format and refuse to read it. What to look for?

After having followed the guide in the link below
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide
I tried to reproduce MP3 files on video like .AVI or MP4 and everything was fine.Every program and library seems that has been installed correctly.
But when I checked , following the instructions in the link, I found different results. I can understand that the guide has been written a long time ago and some packages are not available anymore in the repository, but I think there are too many differences.
This is what I got:
Code:
And I got the following list
Another differerence that I have noticed is: when I was listening a MP3 file using Amarok the music was quite clear and loud, but when I reproduce a MP4 or MP3 video file using VLC I could bearily hear something and the volume was at its maximum. How can it be ?
