Ubuntu :: Evolution On 2 Partition But Only One Source Folder?
Jan 22, 2010
I have 2 different distros on 2 partitions. I have Evolution on both distros and want to utilise the same .evolution folder from both distros depending which one I am using at present. In other words, if I have something changed in evolution in distro 1 I would like to see that change and work on in distro 2 and vice versa, because they work from the same /home partition. Possible?

When I get my partitions listed in the terminal or in GParted they go up sequentially to sda7 as they should. The media folder in my file system shows the other dual boot OS and a data disk partition, both mounted, which is correct. All good. But there is a third strange folder titled sda8 however I have no such partition. /etc/fstab shows no sda8 either. When I open /media/sda8, it shows no files, says its empty and lists an empty available space that equals the empty space on the Linux OS partition in which the folder sits. But no pie chart shown, and it belongs to root. I changed the permission and found I can save files to it.

I came home, having left Evolution running all day, to find it frozen and unresponsive. I killed it, opened it back up... and same thing. It opens, checks through my folders (I have one imap account, and one MH folder that Evolution dumps my pop mail into.) and freezes.
In the status bar, when it freezes, this is what it's doing:
Opening folder mh:///home/katia/mail;command=ssh%20-C%20-l%20%25u%20%25h%20exec%20/usr/sbin/imapd#inbox(...)
And then it just hangs.
If I disable my MH folder real quick, it doesn't hang and I can use my imap account fine. Re-enabling my MH folder quickly causes the hang again.
I tried opening the MH folder in clawsmail, but it hung also. Mutt was able to open it fine.

A friend running Evolution on Ubuntu 9.10 lost her "Sent" folder. I soon discovered that she must have accidentally dragged it to "Templates", because inside that folder was another "Sent" folder containing all her sent e-mails. The main "Sent" folder was still there, but empty.
I moved all her sent e-mails back to the main "Sent" folder, and then tried to delete Templates-Sent, but Evolution just says it can't do that.

I find it gets stuck at refreshing folder and I have to close it and re-open to get it going again. It did not use to b a problem in the past, we seem to be regressing in its usability since the early versions of ubuntu. I hope someone there knows what the problem is, otherwise have to start experimenting with other email clients, what a pain.

Is there a way to remove individual deleted e-mails (as opposed to having to empty the entire contents of the folder) from the trash folder in the Evolution e-mail program? If not, you can do this in Outlook, why would this option not be included in Evolution?

I'm trying to effectively use EVOLUTION for email but am finding it frustrating. I created a folder to house a specific group of messages. For each message, I went to the "Message" tab and clicked on "move to folder." The folder heading on the top left indicates that there are 30 messages in that folder, BUT NO MESSAGES ARE APPEARING.

I used Unison to sync my desktop and laptop. Now I am getting the following error when I open my Evolution Inbox (and a few of my other mailbox folders).
"Error while Opening folder mbox:/home/myname/.evolution/mail/local#Archive/foldername"
"column folder_name is not unique"
I have tried moving the .evolution/local/mail folder opening Evolution, closing and then moving back - no joy. It is also definitely not a folder size problem, my mailbox is less than 1GB.
Opening Evolution from the terminal I get;
** (evolution:7529): DEBUG: mailto URL command: evolution %s
** (evolution:7529): DEBUG: mailto URL program: evolution
[code]....
I tried using the advice in this thread (the only one I can find with a similar error):
[URL]
cd ~/.evolution/mail ; for i in `find . -name folders.db`; do echo "Rebuilding Table $i"; sqlite3 $i "pragma integrity_check;"; done However, I still get the problem. I'll paste the print out below as it is rather long.

How can I get old emails back in the evolution inbox?

I am using evolution for my email client, and it shows me hidden files and folders in the folder tree. Basically, my email folder is in a unix folder on a system, and that system logs me into my folder when I try using evolution. The downside is that files like .bashrc, .bash_profile and other weird stuff end up in the foldertree view
See how the tree would show bashrc and .lynxrc? The folder "documents" shouldn't be showing either.Yeah, that's really annoying. It showing the contents of the $HOME folder that I login to.In thunderbird those things wouldn't show.It must be evolution specific.Anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?

I'm trying to do the simplest thing. Compile XMMS. I navigated to the folder containing the extracted source and ran ./configure. That failed, so I remembered to install the build-essential package.
After that, I continued and got this output:
It said I didn't have glib installed, whatever that is. I did "apt-get install glib" and it told me it couldn't find the package called "glib". I thought, "Yeah, that seems a little too broad of a package name".
So then I went to Synaptic and did a search for "libglib" and noticed I already have libglib2.0-0 installed, as well as libglib2.0-data and libglib-perl.
How can I get this to to work correctly? I know the process should be ./configure, make, and then make-all, but I get stuck on the ./configure step.

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 - from 10.10, and now experiencing connection problems with Evolution connecting to my IMAP Microsoft Mail Server. This was working, I was successfully receiving and sending mail via my IMAP setup in Evolution. Since the upgrade to 11.04, it stopped working with the error: "Error while Refreshing folder "INBOX". You must be working online to complete this operation." I check to see if it's in online mode, and it is. I set evolution to work in offline mode. Then I set it back to "online mode" and I get the error: "Error while Reconnecting to 'IMAP Server mail.foo.blah.de.bla". Could not connect to mail.foo.blah.de.bla: Connection Refused"

I have a dual boot machine. I have changed "My Documents" in Windows 7 to my G partition to the folder "G/Windows data" I have just bought a Buffalo networked 1TB LinkStation backup drive for our two desktops and notebook, and the backup software is useless for Linux and Windows 7 - won't install with anything later than XP! So I will want a linux program to backup the two folders in Drive G to the LinkStation every day, automatically - if that is possible. I now want to change my /Home drive to another folder in the G drive called "G/Ubuntu data"

I have installed a new hard drive and partitioned some space that I am wanting to use for keeping my Music files on. I have entered a line into the /etc/fstab file that I believe mounts the partition properly, but it is giving root owner ship of the partition. Is there a better way of doing this? perhaps mounting the drive some where else and using a hard link? the line I have so far in my fstab is
/dev/sdb1 /home/me/Music ext4 defaults,user 0 2
But this is still sowing the drive on my desktop, it also replaces the the name of Music in my places with the fact that it is a drive of such a size.

I did a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 yesterday while trying to get my wireless working again (a problem for another forum). I have previously put my home folder on a separate partition.Having foolishly assumed that it would pick up the home folder as such after the install. Of course it didn't. The partition is still intact but it is not being recognised as the home folder.

Many Ubuntu users seem have their /home folder on a separate partition (better security?). I have a OK dual-boot installation (Win7+Ubuntu 10.04) - should I try to move my /home folder ? If so, how ?I DO NOT want to get into any troubles with my existing setup !I have free (unallocated) disk space both outside and inside the extended partition which is used for Ubuntu (90 GB, Ubuntu is 60 GB ext4 + 7 GB swap).

I'm dual booting on a laptop with an 80gb hd. I've set up the partitions so windows xp has 20gig, ubuntu (edit: 11.4?) has 7 gigs, 3 gigs swap space, and the rest is formatted as FAT32 that I'm looking to use as shared space between the two OSes. The ubuntu live install partition tool suggested (possibly demanded?) that the fat32 be mounted as /windows or /dos, and I chose the former. Everything's running fine, both OSes see the partition, but I can't set my home folder to exist in this shared space.
I've been in system > admin > users and groups- I try setting the home folder as /windows/home/chris. (I had a home folder backed up that I have already copied to this location) The dialog recognizes that there's a folder there already, asks if I want to use those new files or copy old ones. I say use new files, and close the window. Nothing changes though- in fact if I open users and groups immediately after, it's already reverted to /home/chris . I've tried changing from a different user account as well.

I have been foolish and accidentally deleted the 'Boot' folder from my Vista partition and now cannot boot Windows from the GRUB launcher. I'm not sure what to do next, since I can't find the recovery DVD either.
I managed to find a site with the 'bootmgr' file available to download but couldn't find anywhere to download the contents of the 'Boot' folder. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is there any software that can be run in Ubuntu (which launches perfectly well of course) which might fix this?

I had some trouble with my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 so I decided to reinstall the OS. (I have my /home on a separate partition).
[ntfs] [ntfs] [ext3/home] [ubuntu] [swap]
I re installed Ubuntu on the partition I set aside for the OS. Ubuntu installed, everything works as it should but now all the contents my Home folder is gone! I did not set any options that would of formatted the /home partition during installation I only set the partition to be used for home selecting [use this partition]. I suspect that Ubuntu set the home folder back to the way it comes out of the box I need to recover this drive, its so important that its life or death! How can I recover this partition and the files that where on this drive?

Anyways, I recently got into the whole HTPC scene, and picked up an Acer Revo for my self, with a media center OS (XBMC) that was apparently modded from Ubuntu. Keep in mind that I can only use the terminal for any of this, as the GUI is just for video settings, etc.
So, XBMC just totally crashed on me, and the GUI stopped working. The files were still there, I just couldn't watch them. After many hours of tinkering, I decided to just reinstall XBMC, but make two partitions, and then move my movies and stuff to the new, working partition, and afterwards, delete the old, non working one.
I just don't know how to move from one partition to another.
So, can someone explain, in absolute layman terms, how to move my "Movies" folder from my first partition, to the New one?

I also am having problems with 11.04 and the Unity desktop. In particular when I ask Evolution to Back Up its settings, I get the error message "The folder contents could not be displayed" "Operation not supported". I've used this operation many times on earlier versions of Ubuntu. I've tried removing and re-loading Evolution, but no difference.

I have just finished transferring my home folder to a new partition. I did so by carefully following instructions on this link [URL] I had firefox open and was copying instructions one by one into an open terminal window.
When I tried to reboot ubuntu I first had a problem with ICEauthority which I think is now fixed and ubuntu then started as normal but when I tried to run Firefox I got a message saying that it was already open.
As I had Firefox open when I was copying files to the new partition I assume that some setting was copied saying that Firefox was open?
Is it possible to simply adjust this setting or do I have to undo the transfer and repeat the process with firefox closed.
I have not deleted my copy of the old home folder yet.

I'm looking for a central location on my network of 1 Karmic and 3 XP Pros for my Documents, Videos, Music etc.
I have an empty 1TB drive in my Karmic box currently formatted as one NTFS partition and I was thinking of mounting that drive in the Karmic /home folder.
Will Karmic be all right using an NTFS partition as the /home folder?
