Jun 30, 2010The title says it all really. I run Empathy, have used it for a while with both Google-chat and MSN protocols. I've been using it for a few months now and suddenly my MSN contacts have all disappeared.
People are able to contact me via MSN, and when their message window pops up I am able to respond. It says they are offline however.
I have tried listing all offline contacts but they still do not appear in the list.
I have tried uninstalling (including config files) and reinstalling but this wasn't successful either. When I reinstalled it still had details of my accounts so clearly the cofig files were not removed properly.
Ubuntu :: Display Empathy Contacts In Titlebar?
Jan 4, 2011I'm very new to Ubuntu. Short of using it as a boot system to recover Windows installations I spent the time to fully integrate. After a recent Windows 7 (shell32.dll error) I decided to back up all my information and move over to Ubuntu 10.10 with a Windows 7 Dual-Boot and after some setup I'm really loving it!
Since I'm a web developer that works with Linux/php on a regular basis I figured setting up Ubuntu with a /var/www partition for server testing would be ideal. ^_^
I used the search on this forum a lot and I see how friendly and helpful the Ubuntu community is, making newcomers integrate very well. So thank you very much for all your helpful answers!
Now the issue (a simple one): I'm trying to figure out how to display my contacts in Empathy in the upper right taskbar when I click my empathy logo. It says "Available, Away, Busy, etc" but I would like to display available contacts when I click there... is there any way to do this?
Ubuntu :: Empathy Shows Offline Contacts As Online?
May 2, 2010After moving from 9.04 to 10.04, the single most annoying issue for me is Empathy. Yes, it doesn't pop up a new window when a new message arrives. Yes I missed few messages because of that (no, turning the small "mail" icon to green doesn't get my attention as much as a new window). But, I can live with this.
The real issue for me is it shows Offline contacts as Online. Let's start Empathy and let's say you have 10 contacts as Online. If one of them goes Offline, Empathy still shows the contact as online. You will only find this out when you try to send a message.

Jan 8, 2011I am using Empathy messenger 2.32.1 on Ubuntu 10.10. The issue I have is that try as I may, I cannot get the 'ungrouped' list empty i.e. there are always 6-7 contacts during every empathy login session that show up as 'ungrouped' even though I specifically grouped them into a user-defined group during the last empathy login session. For e.g. I login into gmail and facebook during session-A and classify all my 'ungrouped' contacts into relevant groups. I logout and log back in to session-B, and now I still see some of my grouped contacts go back into the 'ungrouped' pile.

Oct 14, 2010I've just upgraded to Maverick and as the Me menu works with Empathy I started to use it as my default IM client.
But no matter what I do, it won't show my picture.
I tried resizing the picture to 96x96, I tried to convert it from jpg to png. I tried uninstalling the program with apt-get remove --purge. I tried also removing the ~/config/Empathy directory and all others related to the program and then reinstalling it but nothing seems to work.

Nov 21, 2010I have had nothing but trouble, and - judging from the extent of your forums - it looks like I'm not the only one.If this system is so great, why do so many people have so much trouble?
1). How do I import my Contacts, especially if Ubuntu's email program says it can't find my old Outlook?
2) How do I import my bookmarks, again, if Ubuntu's version of Firefox says it can't find any other browser?
3) If I go ahead and install this thing, and then decide it is too much hassle, how hard is it going to be to uninstall it?
I don't mean to be contentious here, but I really don't want to get into something that is only going to substitute one frustration for another, either.

Mar 4, 2011after upgrading to 10.10 I ran into one problem. Upgraded some while ago (when released), then noticed problem but now it starts to really bother me. Unfortunately didn't find any solution yet. I'm 100% sure I didn't have such problem during upgrades starting from Karmic till Lucid.
The problem is with any version of wine (it's not wine issue, i think) and MetaTrader4 on it. Not typical VNC issue The problem is that it works almost normally, but don't show some lines on screen. Take a look at screenshot attached. I found in wine proposal to disable xrender: [URL]... it really helps with that issue, but then I ran in typical AplhaBlend problem and no visible icons in toolbars. So I have to choose to see normal icons in toolbars (see 2nd screenshot) or to see correct chart

I intend to continue using Lucid for a couple years, but the version of Empathy available in Lucid has some issues with logging chats -- there's no way to disable chats from being logged and there's no easy way to delete chat logs. The current version allows one to disable logging but it's not available in Lucid, only Meerkat.

Dec 26, 2010I have been using Ubuntu 10.10 for a few weeks now (have been using Ubuntu/Linux on and off for quite a while). I had to work around some things for a while to get it correctly partitioned with Windows 7 and what not which led to me formatting and reinstalling a few times to get it just right. Along the way, I was able to upgrade my Empathy messenger from 2.32.1 to 2.32.2. I loved the upgrade as it has the notification icon for me installed which is much nicer than the colored envelope when someone sends me a message. I have tried to upgrade to it recently and it is not allowing me to do so. Can anyone help me upgrade back to 2.32.2 from 2.32.1?

May 9, 2010I just recently started using Empathy, and so far, it's great with one problem.As long as Empathy is online, my Facebook status (as others see it) is "available", regardless of how I have my status in Empathy. Kind of puts a damper on things when people think I'm being rude and ignoring them. Have others experienced this issue? Is this a user error, or something that needs to be fixed upstream?

General :: Upgrade To 10.04 Opt Drives Fail To Play Or Show Audio Cds On The Desktop?
Aug 6, 2010First my setup: Hardware Genuine AMD Athlon - 512 mg Mem - Nvida card & latest drivers - 80gb & 40gb drives - dvd read only & cdrw.
OS: Ubuntu 10.04 - tried standard desktop then the alt version now back to standard desktop.
Problem: Both optical drives recognise data disks and show them on the desktop. The dvd drive recognises any dvd and not only shows it on the desktop but also flashes up a requester box asking me which program I would like to use to play it. Nothing happens when I insert a music cd in either drive. Rhythm Box Music Player does not show a music cd available to play but does however show my iTouch when I connect it via usb. Btw iTouch is shown on the desktop when connected. What have I done: Fstab had no entries for either drive so I've researched and entered a line for each.The dvd fs is entered as iso9660,udf. The cdrw is using "proc" as a file system as it's the only thing that will show as mounted in Mtab. All else fails. Both drives show up in System/Administration/Disk Utility (irrespective of Fstab entries), therefore the system can see them. Also investigating through the Terminal shows both drives. how to listen to music cds on ubuntu 10.04. I wish to save my music then upload the same to my iTouch. It all worked so well in 8.04.
Software :: Eth0 Doesn't Show After Upgrade To 2.6.38.4or5 Kernel (Arch)
May 4, 2011I've recently upgraded Arch kernel on my laptop to 2.6.38.4 and after reboot I found out that eth0 is missing in ifconfig -a (it only showed lo and wlan0). The same issue is in 2.6.38.5 that came out just couple of days ago. Any idea what can be causing this? What info should I add?

Mar 20, 2011I have both pigeon and empathy working on my laptop, and can chat in both, but i have been wanting to activate my video for both, but apparently it doesn't recognize my webcam. It seems strange as i have skype working perfectly on my system, and can use the video option in it without any problem, so it cant be that my webcam isnt recognized. does anyone know how i can get my webcam working in either or both of these instant messengering services.

Jun 1, 2010While upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu I noticed a warning saying that the installation/upgrade should not be interupted. Unfortunately though, during this process my computer froze up and I had to shut it down. Ubuntu no longer starts on my computer. I still have Windows though, which is what I'm using now.
