I am using an NFS to connect my PC running Fedora 10 to a development board running embedded linux. When I installed Fedora 10 everything worked fine. But since I updated the system it gets stuck when the embedded board is looking up the port. I'll explain below...
I set the IP address of my host (my PC) in the embedded board, assigned the locatoin of my root file system to be exported from the host machine, exported by file system on the PC (/usr/exportfs -ra), started (and restarted several times when it didn't work) the NFS service (/sbin/service nfs restart), and boot the embedded board.
The board can successfully ping my PC. It also gets and answer from the DHCP saying it was successfully assigned an IP address (my IP address is...)
However when it gets to the "looking up port" line it gets stuck saying "looking up port of RPC 100003/2 on <my host IP address>"
it times out, and retries on 100005/1 again with no luck.
This all started happening after I ran "yum update".
I checked that rpcbind (which I understand is used now instead of portmap) is running and that my nfs is running using ps. They are both running.
I'm getting to the point where all I can think of is rolling back my installation of Fedora to the non-updated version I have on my ISO. But this means I can't ever run update... I'd rather not do this.
I have verified that all settings in the embedded board remain unchanged and the IP address of my host has not changed as well.

I need to disable DST (Daylight Savings Time) in Ubuntu Feisty 7.04.
I know that the daylight savings rules can be found with:
$ zdump -v America/New_York | grep 2010
America/New_York Sun Mar 14 06:59:59 2010 UTC = Sun Mar 14 01:59:59 2010 EST isdst=0 gmtoff=-18000
America/New_York Sun Mar 14 07:00:00 2010 UTC = Sun Mar 14 03:00:00 2010 EDT isdst=1 gmtoff=-14400
America/New_York Sun Nov 7 05:59:59 2010 UTC = Sun Nov 7 01:59:59 2010 EDT isdst=1 gmtoff=-14400
America/New_York Sun Nov 7 06:00:00 2010 UTC = Sun Nov 7 01:00:00 2010 EST isdst=0 gmtoff=-18000
I noticed that the installation doesn't mention DST as an option. Does Ubuntu allow for operating without DST? If so, how can I disable it?

So I just installed Ubuntu on my second laptop, however I ran into a problem. The F9 key is going crazy. I'm not exactly sure what is causing it (I've already popped off and cleaned the keys) but if I could find a way to just disable it I'd be very happy.

I know I could do the play on linux deal, but I would really like to disable this "feature" entirely. Can I do that, and how?

After the nightmare of installing Ubuntu10.04 as my second os, with windows 7, dual booting using grub 2 ( GRUB PUTS NOT FOUND). I am using wubi and the win 7 bootloader, I still have the splash screen of grub 2 after I select Ubuntu off the win7 boot loader. I really don't think I need this. Could I get rid of the grub 2 loader, it really doesn't serve any purpose except take up boot up time? go easy, it took me a while to figure out how to shorten the DEFAULT boot load time in grub 2

My goal is to prevent gnome from mounting and opening up a file browser when any device is plugged in (USB, CD/DVD) for a Desktop User account. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook RemixI modified several settings in Nautilus (Edit --> Preferences --> Media (tab). I Selected "Never prompt or start programs on media insertion" and unchecked "Browse media when inserted".I restarted the system, but when I plug in a USB mass storage device the file browser window still appears and the device is mounted.I dug down into gconf and found the following registry keys that I believe are of interest:
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount (unchecked)
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount_open (unchecked)
/apps/nautilus/preferences/media_autorun_never (checked)
Has anybody run into this problem and found a solution? Modifying the keys I mentioned above worked for everyone else that has asked the "disable automounting" question (that I've found). Some very old posts mentioned gnome-volume-manager, but it is not installed on my system.
EDIT:This seems to only happen when the Netbook Launcher is started. If Netbook Launcher is removed from the list of startup programs and the system is restarted, I can insert devices without getting a pop-up window and without the device being mounted.

If I'm in a folder and I press a letter, a text box would pop up at the button and the letters would go in there. It's very annoying, because when I am listening to songs, I press more the one key at the same time so I can find the song I want fast. Impossible to do this in Ubuntu with the search box.

Sometimes the Insert key can be VERY annoying in the following sense:
1. It is close to the Delete and Home key (in many keyboards, not all), so chances are that it often gets mis-pressed. This also depends on how the keyboard is designed. Maybe a good design can avoid such kind of mis-pressing (even with the same layout).
2. A mis-pressing of the Insert key can be VERY disastrous (you can imagine, e.g. when used in command line during a 'rm' process in a rush), although this happens very rarely.
I did not find any option to disable this key in the system configuration, although it seems possible to do this by installing a plugin. But it is not difficult to add such an option in the keyboard setting panel, right? I must say that the current 'keyboard layout options' panel is already quite messy, although I don't know the meanings of most of them.
