Debian Multimedia :: Focus Is Trapped And Left Mouse Click Doesn't Transfer Focus?
Aug 9, 2011
I'm hit with a very annoying bug: mouse clicks do not give focus anymore, focus stays trapped and sometimes right clicking the element that last had focus allows the next left click to move focus. I'm running wheezy with kde. Searching the web it I found no solution but it seems my problem is close to what is reported there:e issue: after alt+tab the window decoration changes as if the focus had moved to the new window but it stays trapped in the previous window. Rebooting does not fix the issue.I have nvidia graphics set up with dual screen through the nvidia drivers but this setup has been working good for several months, so I don't think it's related.

One of those things that make yo go "WTF?" After browsing the internet with Firefox, there appears a peculiar problem: if I move the pointer to a certain area of the screen, I can't click (left, right, middle) nor use mouse wheel. The area can be of variable size, but usually it's small, in the lower part of the screen, it's x dimension greater than y one (a horizontally placed rectangle). The problem doesn't go away when I restart Firefox (obviously it does when I reboot). It obstructs any window under it (I can't even click on the desktop where 'it' is). It's as if there is an invisible window that 'steals' focus when I move the mouse over it. I'm on 11.04, Classic Ubuntu (Gnome 2.3x).
A quick UPDATE: dragging an icon and dropping it on the said area behaves as if I dragged an item and dropped it where it doesn't belong (i.e. it just slowly returns to it's original position). Also, I tried killing it with Force Quit applet, but only my desktop reloaded.

Before in 10.04 and previous, when I clicked on a window it was brought to the front. In 10.10 it doesn't, it accepts input but the other window over it stays over it until i click the windows top bar.

When I click on the OpenOffice button in my panel, the window comes to the front, but the focus is still on the last window; so clicking on the OpenOffice button again will not minimize it, typing will not key anything into the document, and clicking on the last app's button will minimize that one instead of switching to it. I might also ask the OpenOffice community in case this is an OO issue. I also might need to switch to AbiWord. OO is an annoying application.

For some reason the mouse curser starts out in the middle of the screen after booting as normal but as soon as i move it, it gets stuck in the top left corner of the screen.It still responds to clicks and i can sometimes see it "wants" to move but itets repositioned into that corner.he problem exists in the live-cd session as well as in the installed session.I looked into the Xorg.0.log file and it said something along the lines of:Code:HID XXXX:XXXX: failed to initialize for relative axesI suspect this to be the culprit, yet i've never had any problems with the mouse in any other operating system (writing from kubuntu 9.10 right now) and i've used most of the popular ones.Is there anything i can do about it? Seems that X is doing things differently in Fedora... There's got to be some switch or something.

Until a recent update, I had no trouble figuring out how to set my preference that a window would become active when the mouse entered it. Since then, about a month ago, I have been unable to find a means to do that.

I'm running lenny on a dell c600. Presently I'm using kde (which is great), but due to system requirements (c600 is ancient... more than 5 years old ; ) it's a bit slow. So I started checking out lxde and xfce. There both great, except for one problem: The left click on a program icon in the (pardon the microsoft analogy) start menu launches it unstead of giving me options like 'link to desktop'

1. Activate window without click missing. This is a show stopper for me as long as there are other choices.

I'm using the ubuntu-classic + compiz desktop with 11.04. However, compared to older versions the behaviour of focus-follows-mouse seems to have changed for the worse when using the keyboard to switch applications. In older versions, an app selected using alt-tab or scale or similar keyboard method would get focus, even if the mouse was not over it. Focus follows-mouse behaviour would only happen again if you moved the mouse to a new app. In 11.04, the app selected using alt-tab immediately loses focus if the mouse is not over it. This makes alt-tab kinda useless Is there any way I can fix this behaviour to the pre-11.04 version?

I recall a partner in a CS class who changed my setup to focus a window on mouse over and that was really handy for programming with a ton of terminals open. I've seen Dwell Click under accessibility options, but that doesn't seem to do anything. I know that sometimes the GUI control applets have features undisabled that don't really do anything (i.e. WINS) if you don't have the right stuff installed. How do I get mouse over pretty much just simulate clicking the window.

"Select windows when the mouse moves over them" does not work after an upgrade. I'm still using the Ubuntu Classic desktop configured for Metacity. Anyone know how to fix this without resorting to Unity?

Openoffice.org apparently ignores the window manager altogether for questions of focus. This combined with opening lots of little dialogs and menus is making it almost unusable. (Over at openoffice.org, this has been answered with (essentially) "I use click to focus, so raising on focus is normal, so I'm putting at the lowest possible priority because it has nothing to do with usability.") The problem is that I use focus following the mouse, with click to raise. This is very convenient for copying between two windows and saves me a lot of time and energy, as I have to do this quite often. Current behavior, however, causes Openoffice.org to raise any window you happen to pass over, thus hiding the floating toolbar or dialog box that you were trying to click on. Worse, as the window you brushed by has gained focus, in most cases, the toolbar or dialog disappears entirely. The only solution is to move everything around so as to have a path to get to your toolbar/dialog without touching another window, or to minimize all but one openoffice document. Is there anyway to make Openoffice.org usable with this setting?

I am using Fedora11/Gnome and I frequently use several windows for input. I would like to focus on a window just by moving the mouse over it (but not pop up). However, I can not find anywhere to set up this option.

When you open up a file browser, if there are tons of files in some directory, it will be tedious to locate the desired one mannually. For most of the file browsers, the desired file will be located automatically by obtaining the focus when you type the filename. I don't believe that Nautilus doesn't have this feature.So, there must be something I can configure with. Note that I'm just using the default Nautilus with fresh Ubuntu installation.

I've successfully installed debian 8.3 KDE to my desktop fill it with different progs and quite smoothly use it for about one month.
Fixing some minor issues with google. But suddenly something get wrong
I do not remember that I done anything special but one day after logging to system I found that system do not fully process left mouse button.
Mouse pointer was moving OK, right mouse botton was able to envoke pop-up menu.
I was able to run programs from desktop icons by left-mouse button click .. but once program window was opened it does not react on left mouse button so for example i was not able to switch between browser tabs or close window clicking on it it top right cross As well KDE "start" button do open menu but that's all no reaction on left click.
First solution was ctrl-alt-del wait for 30 seconds .. re-login and voila ... that restores normal behavior until next reboot
after some reading I found more quick workaround ctrl-alt-F1 ..... ctrl-alt-F7 and OK system works again as expected no problem with mouse at all...
I've tried to create another user, tried to reinstall kde-window-manager (kwin) and kde-plasma-desktop (just marking it for reinstall in Synaptic) no effect.
After some time it become react on left mouse button even worse .. so even KDE start menu button stop open at all after click strange but really like it was some live slowly dying organism .
ctrl-alt-F1 ..... ctrl-alt-F7 is my only life saver at the moment but it is only workaround ....

I'm not sure if I should post this question in "hardware & laptops", or "Desktop Environments", because this is a hardware problem on a desktop computer.
Description of Problem:There is another thread that discussed this same problem that I'm having: However that thread is so old that the suggestions in it no longer work in Ubuntu 10.04 and for whatever reason I can not make a reply to that thread.As in the above thread, I've tried other input devices and rebooting the computer and using other USB ports, and my mouse still intermittently double left clicks randomly at times when I've only clicked the left mouse button once and at times and places when it should only produce a single click such as when selecting a drop down menu.
Has any one else had this problem, and does any one have any idea how to fix it or to trouble shoot this a bit more? Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to further clarify or troubleshoot this issue.

I have successfully installed an ATI EAH4350 (Radeon 4350) to work as a dual head in Ubuntu 10.04 but there is a bug though, which I noticed given the following scenario:
* Dual Head config (Multi-desktop)
* Monitor 1
- Running firefox and terminal
* Monitor 2
- Running WinXP in Virtual Box 3.1.6
- Virtual Box is in full screen mode
- WinXP is showing a flash movie using firefox also full screen mode
* Monitor 2 is configured above Monitor 1.
Sometimes the mouse gets trapped at the top of Monitor 1 (in between the two monitors). Keyboard doesn't function as well but the currently running apps continue to operate "normally". Ctrl + Alt + Fx doesn't work.
What is frustrating is when it happens it's beyond my control. I can't do anything else besides reset the PC.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Windows machine a couple of days ago via wubi (with no partition), and it seems to be working. However, I have a problem: When I press any of the 'special' keys on the keyboard (Vol up, down, mute, and various others), the left-click on my mouse disables. I'm using a Microsoft Digital Media Keyboard 3000, which has a lot of special keys (and the f keys are special by default), so I've been having trouble not disabling my mouse. Anyone know what the problem is, how to resolve it? And on top of that, how do I make the special keys work?

I just installed my hard drive with 10.04 running Gnome into a "new" computer with an Intel dual core CPU. Everything seems to work fine except that my USB mouse won't left-click within applications. It works OK on the desktop to open or close applications, but, besides a visual affect when I click, nothing works within windows.
This occurs even after switching to a PS2 mouse...I've also discovered that right-clicking on the desktop produces nothing at all and right-clicking within an application produces the "maximize/minimize" menu - as though the mouse was hovering over the frame controls.

It opens two tabs, instead for one!-edit--Damn, it is actually the same issue in Windows. Need a new mouse

KDE has been randomly freezing/stalling when changing window focus, opening, or closing programs. It does not seem to be restricted to any particular programs. If I change focus by clicking in a new window, often, when the system comes out of it's frozen state, the mouse is still in a button down state even though I've released the click.No errors are generated in /var/log/messages or in ~/.xsession-errors.I'm running 11.3 and here's the output of uname -a:
