Ubuntu :: Destroyed Windows Partion With Gpart

Jan 19, 2010

OK so i burn a copy of 9.10 to a CD and started up the live desktop, when i got in i started up gpart. i desisted to give 40 GB to ubuntu i put in the numbers and came out with a 39.04 GB empty partion, so i toyed with it to try to get to 40 on the nose. this is the point where i should have walked away while i was ahead but i did't, i kept toying with it till i was almost there, but when i finally got it i realized i still had to finalized the changes so i hit the green check mark and let it run after 10 min's of gpart was reading my entire 180 gb partion which i had windows on. i grew in partion, and i remembered it was much quicker in the past when i partioned from inside the install so foolishly not knowing what i was doing i hit cancel. then my heart stopped when i saw the word unknown where it used to say ntfs. i relised i just destroy my windows install. i started to panic, because my backup of all my files where on another computer and guess what 3 days ago the hard drive died on it and i never got a chance to back up the stuff from this one to somewhere else. then i relised i had a 10 gb factory installed backup partion. so i restarted the machine and got nothing operating system not detected, and when i trying to got to the started up menu i didn't have the option to boot in recovery mode which i was expecting. but i had one last saving grace i upgraded from vista to 7 for free and still have the install disk, so i started up the install disc and selected recovery mode after trying automatic recovery and falling i tried restore from system image, it couldn't find the partion, as a last ditch effort i tryed system restore and as expected failed

i am at my wits end and have no idea what to do next short of wipe the drive and do a clean install, which i relay don't want to do because I'll lose all my data.

Ubuntu :: It Destroyed The 'boot On Windows' Option Had Setup?

Aug 3, 2010

I have a sister-in-law, married to an accountant who lives and breathes WinSoftware. I worked hard at convincing her to switch to the simplest Linux available imho, an Ubuntu, latest edition.She tried it, worked fine, was happy.Thenstarted to kernel update.It destroyed the 'boot on Windows' option I had setup, making it a daily pain for her husband to get on his Windows. I need not insist on the fact that Linux won't ever be back on that computer, because Ubuntu's update scripts can't do something as simple as check if Windows is the primary boot

Nov 27, 2010

I have a two Hard disk one of which is 160GB & other is 500GB. In 160GB HD I had installed fedora 13 & in 500GB Windows 7. There was my unluck that the whole of partion of 500GB were convered into dynamic disk so that i was unable to access other partion of 500GB HD. i searched for that but ultimately i was unsuccessful. Now I decide to format the C: drive (of 500GB HD).C: drive was 80GB size and there was a system information partition of 100MB created on windows seven installation.Now on installation of fedora 14 in 500GB (at partition 80GB + 100MB) i am unble to access other D: & e: drive. In Disk utility of fedora it is showing 414GB free.

Ubuntu Installation :: Partitions Seen By Gpart And Disk Manager - Not By Installer

Apr 11, 2011

Wanting to dual boot XP with UBUNTU. Live CD verified good.

ran df in terminal:

Ran sudo fdisk -lu in terminal:

Partition table entries are not in disk order

Originally I had two partitions for Windows xp of 100 gig each. I cleared / backed up the second partition and created two 50 gig partitions, splitting the second into two linux (using Gparted) partitions labelled root and swap.

Disk Utility sees this hdd as a RAID component. It is connected through a RAID controller.

The installer (in allocate drive space step) doesn't see them for some reason.

Hardware:
AMD Athlon 64+clawhammer processor
Asus A8N-SLI mobo
hdd as above

Ubuntu :: Macbuntu-10.04 Destroyed Lucid

Sep 2, 2010

I can now no longer access my desktop. the only way I can access ubuntu is through the recovery kernel, and logging in through the command prompt. I installed this theme using install.sh also with the package is uninstall.sh though I can't access it through commands.

What happened is I downloaded the package,extracted it and ran the install.sh. It went through all of the setting up that it was supposed to do and in the end looked like it was working like it was supposed to. However my compiz got shut off so I decided to turn it back on through the desktop settings. Everything looked fine, I hit ok to accept the settings then that's when my screen went haywire. Everything on the screen was blown apart so I had to reboot, hoping that would fix it. now when I try to log back in It will go to the splash screen then go all black before the login page.I've tried resetting Gnome with rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity though that will not work either. I guess I need to have access to the desktop for that to work. I don't know what to do, can my Os be saved or am I looking at a reinstall.I think if I can disable compiz perhaps long enough to boot I might be able to get rid of that theme. thoug I can't find any info on how to do it. everyanswer I find is based on having the desktop running and using gtk programs such as metacity --replace.anyone have any ideas on how I can access my desktop again?

Ubuntu :: Partition Table Gets Destroyed / MBR Purgatory

Jan 1, 2010

My problem isn't directly related to ubuntu or linux, but I figured that my best chance at a fix would be on ubuntu forums. The problem is that every time I reboot my computer, my partition table gets destroyed. I tried fixing it with testdisk and gparted, but as soon as I rebooted, everything is back to broken. So far I've troubleshooted to the point where I know it's not an operating system's fault. I'm hoping it's nothing more severe than a bad hard drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic Grub Updated And Destroyed Itself

Jul 26, 2010

I'm a GRUB novice, unfortunately. My system is a 7-year old Dell tower. Two hard drives, each sliced up into a bunch of ~30 GB partitions. I dual-boot WinXP and Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10. I think I have GRUB2, but don't know how to check without being able to boot. This problem arose during a standard upgrade when I didn't pay attention and GRUB updated and apparently destroyed itself. Now when I boot my system, I get the following message:

Code:
Booting from local disk...
GRUB loading.
error: no such disk
grub rescue>

Almost every fix I found in my searching involved:
Code:
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
but none of the solutions said what to do if that file wasn't found.

When I boot from my Ubuntu install DVD, I can mount my various partitions and browse their filesystems, so it appears that my data is all still intact, I just can't get to it. What should I try next?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Destroyed 2nd Partition?

Nov 25, 2009

I had opensuse 11.0 on a system at home. Decided to install 11.2 since I had read that 11.2 can do upgrades from then forward.Well I fiddled with the partitioning settings, made sure that it was configured exactly like it was before - /dev/sda1 is /; /dev/sda2 is swap, /dev/sda3 is /max.I knew I would have to do a clean install, but thought it would not touch my other partition /max. I explicitly told it to NOT format /dev/sda3.Well when it booted, it goes into maintenance mode - says my partition is hosed. fsck tells me that maybe my /dev/sda3 is a zero length partition.Hallelujah that I turned off my external drive.So,for sure I will NOT be installing 11.2 on my other two systems at work.Now that my entire machine at home is a vegetable, think I might go take a look at Debian. This is not fun.Thought Linux would be a bit better than Windows in this respect.

Debian Multimedia :: Email Destroyed After Attachment Removed

Sep 11, 2015

I've found a serious bug in KMail 4.14.1 (Debian 8): When you delete an attachment from an HTML message, all other content of that message (i.e. the whole body part) will be destroyed.

How to reproduce:

Create an HTML ("Rich Text") e-mail message and save it as draft (or send it if you like)
Mark your saved (or sent) message, right klick on the attachment and choose "Delete Attachment"

The content of the body will be replaced with text like this:Code: Select all. You deleted an attachment from this message. The original MIME headers for the attachment were:

Content-Type: application/pdf
name="test.pdf"
filename="test.pdf"

This problem is specific to HTML (Rich Text) messages. It doesn't apply to plain text messages.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Natty NarWhal Netbook Has Destroyed Asus 1215T's Sound

May 4, 2011

My sound worked fine for the first few days.. then I noticed the mic wasn't working in skype so I tried messing with it in sound preferences. Now my speakers explode with this horrible distorted noise(semi-recognizable as whatever I'm trying to play) and sometimes freezes when I try to play any sound. Reinstalling just the drivers to avoid a fresh install, according to the stickied thread at the top, did nothing. Attempting to place the settings back to their defaults also does not appease this bloodthirsty beast.

I've been on a rampage through every lead I've found on trying to fix this problem but nothings worked so far.. it seems the problem is that the onboard speakers (Internal Audio; Analog Surround 4.0 Output) hates it's life in an Ubuntu OS too much to continue living. Not sure if the RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200] output is with it either.

Also heres my.. file report thingy(alsa-info.sh): [URL]

Server :: Mounting CIFS Share Causes The Mount Point To Be Destroyed?

Jun 18, 2009

I've been trying for a while mounting a EMC NAS share on linux. As far as I know the NAS share behaves just like a regular windows share, so the mount process should be very similar. On the NAS server, the disc "Disc1" is shared, and I need to mount a sub-subfolder of that share. This is my line in /etc/fstab:

Code:

//windows_box/Disc1$/folder1/subfolder /var/tmp/mount_test cifs defaults,acl,soft,uid=srvadm,gid=adm,umask=0027,file_mode=0600,dir_mode=0700,credentials=/root/cred.txt,sec=ntlmv2 0 0

When mounting the share, this is what happens:

Code:

[root@server1 tmp]# ll
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 18 10:39 mount_test

[code]....

In the console (i.e. bash), the "mount_test" word on the last line has a red background. When I issue "umount mount_test", everything is back to normal.

OpenSUSE Install :: ATI Driver Installs Have Destroyed SUSE/GNOME Graphics Setup?

May 20, 2011

Caution to all using ati graphics download repository. I have been using SUSE 11.4 after an upgrade from 11.3 through zypper for months. I added ati graphics as a update repository. Software update installed two ati files. I did not notice their names.

Upon installation my graphics was acting funny so I uninstalled the two ati-files figuring I'd be back to where I was. Now I can only get into terminal window after reboot at both runlevel 3 and 5; no graphics at all. I keep getting message re: display 'null' I wish to return to original graphics configuration prior to ati downloads which, I believed used xorg drivers.

I believe I either need to revise xorg.conf file back to original which was overwritten by ati process or reinstall xorg/X11 related files. I have an ati radeon HD 3450 agp card. 32 bit SUSE w/11.4 installed and running. Anyone have a sample xorg.conf that might work or some other ideas of how to get back to where I was.

As a related question, if I do a fresh reinstall of SUSE 11.4 using dvd can I save my /home files and any /filesystem files that my special software created in root directories.

Ubuntu :: Dropped Laptop, Lost Unreadable Partion?

Jun 13, 2010

I just dropped my laptop while it was on. It is a dual boot vista and Ubuntu machine (9.04) and Ubuntu was running at the time. The machine didn't go down and after I got done using it I shut it down normally. Now it will not come back up because grub is saying there is something wrong with the disk geometry. It did give me a command line, I forgot the exact error message but I can look it up if needed.

I tried plugging the hard drive into a different machine under a live cd but everything was in the lost and found folder (80 GB) and the folder was unreadable. I backed up the windows partition successfully using windows explorer and now have been looking at testdisk and Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery ($80) for the Linux partition. I don't know if it is ext3 or ext4, I may have bumped it up to ext4 from the default ext3 during the install. Also a few files on the windows partition were unreadable, so the disk definitely has some physical damage. I'm getting a new one along with a back up system for sure after all this is over.

I got tired of figuring out testdisk so I let the paid app run its free test overnight to see if I could recovery anything before I bought it, but it got hung up on a sector halfway through.

Going forward I think I will try Photorec next and then testdisk again if that doesn't work. Does Photorec get almost all the normal office (doc xls), music (mp3) and video files (mp4) not just pictures?
