General :: Freenas Installed It's System Files To A New Small UFS Partion

Sep 26, 2010

Here's my situation :

I had a samsung 1TB HDD that I used for storing data, on an xp machine, so it was formated as NTFS.I moved this HDD to another machine and installed Freenas on it, and the installation worked fine (fyi, I used the tutorial posted here :[URL]..During the installtion, Freenas installed it's system files to a new small UFS partion. After finishing the setup, I realised that I had changed the file system of the other partion (980gb, previously NFTS) to UFS and now I don'T know how to go back. I had about 400gb of data on it and I'm pretty sure it's still there, but don't know how to get it back.

I tried messing around with recovery software such as R-Studio, and I was able to see some of my files so I know they're still there. After quite a bit of googling around, the only solution I seem to find is using gparted which is a tool to modify partions file system without loosing data, but I'm afraid to use it.

So is there a way to browse NTFS data on a UFS partition and convert it so FreeNas can see my files ? Or is there a way to put the partition back to NTFS so I can back up my data to another drive before I lose something valuable ?

Software :: Can't Mount Root Filesystem After Partion Change

May 25, 2010

I am a linux semi-noob who just got the idea that it would be fun to play with Arch Linux.I was dual-booting Windows and OpenSuSE, and I installed Arch by shrinking the Windows partition and putting a new logical partition in between the windows partition and the swap partition I already have.Unfortunately, opensuse still thinks that its root filesystem is on /dev/sda7 so it fails to boot b/c it is looking at an ntfs filesystem that I used for document sharing.If someone has a solution, that will save me from having to reinstall opensuse.

Ubuntu :: Destroyed Windows Partion With Gpart

Jan 19, 2010

OK so i burn a copy of 9.10 to a CD and started up the live desktop, when i got in i started up gpart. i desisted to give 40 GB to ubuntu i put in the numbers and came out with a 39.04 GB empty partion, so i toyed with it to try to get to 40 on the nose. this is the point where i should have walked away while i was ahead but i did't, i kept toying with it till i was almost there, but when i finally got it i realized i still had to finalized the changes so i hit the green check mark and let it run after 10 min's of gpart was reading my entire 180 gb partion which i had windows on. i grew in partion, and i remembered it was much quicker in the past when i partioned from inside the install so foolishly not knowing what i was doing i hit cancel. then my heart stopped when i saw the word unknown where it used to say ntfs. i relised i just destroy my windows install. i started to panic, because my backup of all my files where on another computer and guess what 3 days ago the hard drive died on it and i never got a chance to back up the stuff from this one to somewhere else. then i relised i had a 10 gb factory installed backup partion. so i restarted the machine and got nothing operating system not detected, and when i trying to got to the started up menu i didn't have the option to boot in recovery mode which i was expecting. but i had one last saving grace i upgraded from vista to 7 for free and still have the install disk, so i started up the install disc and selected recovery mode after trying automatic recovery and falling i tried restore from system image, it couldn't find the partion, as a last ditch effort i tryed system restore and as expected failed

i am at my wits end and have no idea what to do next short of wipe the drive and do a clean install, which i relay don't want to do because I'll lose all my data.

Fedora :: Windows (dynamic) Ntfs Partion Has Lost On Installation Of F14

Nov 27, 2010

I have a two Hard disk one of which is 160GB & other is 500GB. In 160GB HD I had installed fedora 13 & in 500GB Windows 7. There was my unluck that the whole of partion of 500GB were convered into dynamic disk so that i was unable to access other partion of 500GB HD. i searched for that but ultimately i was unsuccessful. Now I decide to format the C: drive (of 500GB HD).C: drive was 80GB size and there was a system information partition of 100MB created on windows seven installation.Now on installation of fedora 14 in 500GB (at partition 80GB + 100MB) i am unble to access other D: & e: drive. In Disk utility of fedora it is showing 414GB free.

I have free space, but how can I use it to create room for a new ordinary partion.when the default partion layout for fedora/centos is to fill the whole space up whether you use it or not?

In Windows, I can access the share as \COMPUTER\myshare, and using Nautilus in Ubuntu, I can connect to //COMPUTER/myshare, but I can't use the name in the mount command.

General :: Simple Way To Umount NFS Mount In System?

Oct 25, 2010

I've mounted a share using standard nomenclature for the NFS mount command with the following command line:

mount -t nfs -o rw {IP address1}:/ /mnt_for_70 / {IP address2}(rw)

mnt_for_70 is a mount point I created on {IP address2}

I'm confuse and want to be sure I use the correct command on the correct host to correctly umount the nfs share.

Would I execute umount /mnt_for_70 on {IP address2}

Not sure if such a simple command will work. As this is a semi-production host pair, I hesitate to just umount so simply & I have no test systems to try this on...

OpenSUSE Network :: Nfs Server On 11.2 - Mount.nfs: Mount System Call Failed

Apr 29, 2010

I've tried to get an opensuse box I have to share a directory via NFS. I've failed each time, but I thought that the third time, I'd enlist some help from the forums, if I could. how do I know that the nfs server and not the client is the problem? Short answer is: I don't! That's why nfs (and many netwrk problems) are laborious, you're troubleshooting needs to take place at both source and desitination. Next question, what do I have set up so far? Well, I did download the nfs server kernel stuff (two months back) and /etc/init.d/nfsserver start seems to get set up OK. No errors and the daemons nfsd, idmapd, mountd area all running. So, I *think* that part is OK. I have the share set up properly in /etc/exportfs and have "exportfs -r" it.

OK, now onto the trickier stuff: the client and iptables. On the client pinging to the nfserver box is perfect, and I have rpcbind running. the reported error is "mount.nfs: mount system call failed" though from experience nfs errors don't mean a whole lot.However, I will go off and check now and see if I need a mountd running on client-side too.Then there's iptables .... ouch, that could be a long and painful trek. I don't see any specific ports being blocked, and it's the iptables that the default v11.2 opensuse came with. I did turn them off and the problem was the same, so whether wishfl thinking or not, I'm hoping it's not an iptables issue.
