Fedora :: Way To Open Windows Partion Via Virtualbox

Currently i have a dual boot on my laptop of fedora and vista. Is there a way that i can use virtualbox to open my windows partion while using fedora? I understand that virtual box makes a "partition" on my fedora partion and runs of that. It would be pretty awesome if i could open my windows partion while using fedora.

Fedora :: Windows (dynamic) Ntfs Partion Has Lost On Installation Of F14

Nov 27, 2010

I have a two Hard disk one of which is 160GB & other is 500GB. In 160GB HD I had installed fedora 13 & in 500GB Windows 7. There was my unluck that the whole of partion of 500GB were convered into dynamic disk so that i was unable to access other partion of 500GB HD. i searched for that but ultimately i was unsuccessful. Now I decide to format the C: drive (of 500GB HD).C: drive was 80GB size and there was a system information partition of 100MB created on windows seven installation. Now on installation of fedora 14 in 500GB (at partition 80GB + 100MB) i am unble to access other D: & e: drive. In Disk utility of fedora it is showing 414GB free.

Software :: Can't Mount Root Filesystem After Partion Change

May 25, 2010

I am a linux semi-noob who just got the idea that it would be fun to play with Arch Linux.I was dual-booting Windows and OpenSuSE, and I installed Arch by shrinking the Windows partition and putting a new logical partition in between the windows partition and the swap partition I already have.Unfortunately, opensuse still thinks that its root filesystem is on /dev/sda7 so it fails to boot b/c it is looking at an ntfs filesystem that I used for document sharing. If someone has a solution, that will save me from having to reinstall opensuse.

Ubuntu :: Destroyed Windows Partion With Gpart

Jan 19, 2010

OK so i burn a copy of 9.10 to a CD and started up the live desktop, when i got in i started up gpart. i desisted to give 40 GB to ubuntu i put in the numbers and came out with a 39.04 GB empty partion, so i toyed with it to try to get to 40 on the nose. this is the point where i should have walked away while i was ahead but i did't, i kept toying with it till i was almost there, but when i finally got it i realized i still had to finalized the changes so i hit the green check mark and let it run after 10 min's of gpart was reading my entire 180 gb partion which i had windows on. i grew in partion, and i remembered it was much quicker in the past when i partioned from inside the install so foolishly not knowing what i was doing i hit cancel. then my heart stopped when i saw the word unknown where it used to say ntfs. i relised i just destroy my windows install. i started to panic, because my backup of all my files where on another computer and guess what 3 days ago the hard drive died on it and i never got a chance to back up the stuff from this one to somewhere else. then i relised i had a 10 gb factory installed backup partion. so i restarted the machine and got nothing operating system not detected, and when i trying to got to the started up menu i didn't have the option to boot in recovery mode which i was expecting. but i had one last saving grace i upgraded from vista to 7 for free and still have the install disk, so i started up the install disc and selected recovery mode after trying automatic recovery and falling i tried restore from system image, it couldn't find the partion, as a last ditch effort i tryed system restore and as expected failed

i am at my wits end and have no idea what to do next short of wipe the drive and do a clean install, which i relay don't want to do because I'll lose all my data.

Fedora Installation :: OT: Dell BIOS Always Boots Windows Harddisk?

Nov 14, 2010

I have a Dell Vostro with sda and sdb (the latter was installed by myself). I installed FC14 x86 64 onto sdb with /boot being on /dev/sdb8

I did not want to install grub onto /dev/sda as this is a shared machine. I thought that I would be able to use the BIOS's 'select boot device' to select the sdb disk and boot off that and get into FC that way.

fdisk verifies that /dev/sdb8 is marked as bootable and grub (via find /grub/stage1) confirms that it is installed on hd1,7 (ie /dev/sdb8)

However, no matter which hd is choosen as the boot device, Windows is always booted - I change the boot order to use: DVD, sdb, sda but it still boots Windows. It seems like the BIOS only wants to boot sda no matter what.

Fedora :: Cold Boots Often Take Up To 10 Attempts Before The Computer Successfully Boots?

Oct 29, 2010

my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:

the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.

finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.

usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.

this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.

right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.

the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??

And pasted it as it is, in the /etc/fstab file. when the system booted, it didn't work. not only that, I wasn't able to mount the filesystem at all, (it gave me some kind of an error) so I removed the line from fstab file and it all back to normal. how can I mount this filesystem on boot? Ubuntu :: Fail To Mount Disk Right After System Boots?

Apr 10, 2010

I got a little problem with Xubuntu here. Every time after I boot the system, I find one of my partitions from fstab not mounted where it's supposed to be. I do mount -a, and it replies: "mount: /dev/sdb6 already mounted or /mnt/data busy". Checking lsof of neither device nor mount point gives me nothing, and checking the output of mount I see device isn't mounted anywhere.

It gets better than this: after some time, device can be mounted just fine, this time is from 11 to 12 minutes. If something is doing anything with my device that takes whole 11 minutes, how come I don't know what it is? How can I mount device on boot? Some more (ir)relevant facts:

1. This partition is the biggest - 376 Gb

2. Here's my fstab line for this device:

Code:
/dev/sdb6/mnt/dataext3defaults02
3. After the installation, I changed the mount point in fstab, and using /dev/sdb6 instead of UUID is a result of blind experimentation

Fedora X86/64bit :: 14 - Graphics Is Getting Distorted Whenever Move Windows Along The Screen

Mar 27, 2011

Graphics is getting distorted whenever I move windows along the screen. This happened soon after I installed KDE desktop and compiz fusion on my pc. I am having 1GB ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 54 graphics card (Seems like that was the problem). The first fix that I tried: Installed qt-devel compat-libstdc++-33 and then created an xorg.conf file by installing system-config-display and edited the file to include radeon under drivers then restarted --> this didnt work Compiled ATI drivers for linux ---> this also dint work However, I can view the o/p clearly when I type glxgears Seems like the issue is with this. But I donno how to change this

glxinfo | grep direct -i
glxinfo | grep OpenGL -i

When I run the above command, the o/p includes direct rendering: yes" and also various OpenGL information concerning for "Mesa" but not for "ATI Technologies" I am facing this issue on KDE as well as Gnome.. In KDE, if I check activate Desktop graphics then I would get automatically logged out. In gnome if I select "Desktop Effects" then I get a message "3D acceleration not supported".

Fedora Security :: LUKS Encrypted Partion And Start Up

Aug 18, 2010

I run fedora 13 on my laptop (dual boot with Windows 7) and I just created a new partion to hold sensible data, encrypted with LUKS. I followed this tutorial for creating it.Now, everything went well and the new partition works well. But I needed something a little different from what the tutorial suggested, because I don't want the partition to be mounted on the system each time it boots, but I would (unlock and) mount it manually when I need it.

To do so I just didn't follow the Tutorial steps from 7 to 13, thinking that without the changes to crypttab and fstab the partition wouldn't be even touched by the start up process. And that's partially true: the partition isn't mapped nor mounted in the system when I boot, but the problem is that it however keeps asking for the passphrase to unlock it even if it doesn't get mounted or mapped. It just asks for it before the system loads all it's parts (udev, filesystems, etc) and I can't understand why, what it uses it for if it doesn't unlock it.So my question is: why does it ask for the passphrase to unlock luks if I haven't set crypttab and fstab to mount the partition on start up?

Here are my questions:Because I installed LILO to the MBR, should I reinstall it to my Slackware root partition (or somewhere else) prior to blowing out the XP partition where, I assume, the MBR is living? Once I repartition my disk for Slackware only and 'Clonezilla back' my root and home partitions, how do I boot into Slackware? Once I successfully boot into Slackware, what do I do with LILO so that my PC boots into Slackware for ever after?
