I have PDF files that I would like to be able to search the text of. I tried the GNOME Search for Files program (Places->Search for Files...) but it didn't find the PDF files that contained the text. What do you use to search for text in PDF files?
View 2 RepliesI have a Mandriva server with a lot of documents (mostly in pdf format) on it. I want to be able to search on this server for certain documents, via the browser. Most preferably searching through the full contents, but a search on file name only would also do. When a document is found, it should be able to download it from the server, or view it on-line.

but not all, of my text documents show their contents as their icons, instead of using my theme's designated icons for text files. For example, in the above image, the bottom-right file contains: "hello ubuntu forums / this is my problem / how can we fix it? / thank you" and it's icon displays some of this message so that it may be read without opening the file As you can see, the problem occurs with some filetypes, like .txt and .html, but not with others, like .doc or .rtf. How can I force all text files to use my theme's designated icons?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am a member of a group which has written a program whose source code is being held in a specific directory (~cs252/Assignments/basicAsst/project) and we want to go through and change the parameters for the function "sequentialInsert." My job is to find all occurances of the function call to "sequentialInsert" and to also list the files from where the code came from. Also, I have to be in the commandsAsst directory when I do this. I have tried grep and find combined together, and I am at a lost.

This is what I have right now. Well, I thought I knew sed, and apparently I don't... I tried writing this for someone else, and this has given me trouble, so since the user pretty much figured it out on his own, here it goes.
Say VARR=1, so VARX and VARY contain the above text, appended by 1.
What I am trying to do is replace the text "defaults.ctl.card 0" by VARX and "defaults.pcm.card 0" by VARY. The contents of FILE1 is the file being used to search for both text fields, and FILE2 is the output file. I tried using single quotes, double quotes, and a mixture of both, and no go whatsoever. So my question... What is the proper way of searching for text within a file and replacing with a variable?
I am on Ubuntu 11.04 and using Libre Office 3.3.2 to compose new documents and am saving them using .doc, .ppt and .xls files. (due to having to share them with others who are on Windows systems)
I have a lot of doc files and I need to search for text INSIDE these files. I am perplexed with the fact that no search tool is able to search for text INSIDE these file types. "cat" can display them of course, but grep is not able to locate text INSIDE these file types. I even tried to save a .doc file as an .odt file, but no luck. The Applications>Accessories>Search for Files does not search INSIDE doc, xls or ppt with the option "Contains the text".
how RAR archives work. Suppose I have a .rar archive of text documents (for the sake of argument, containing personal information). I am able to run 'shred *.rar' in that directory from the terminal. What happens here? My assumption is that the contents of the .rar file (pointers to the text documents on the disk?) are 'shredded' (overwritten n times), but the text documents themselves are still on the disk intact.

Now, the information I'm actually interested is the X and Y coordinates down towards the bottom (in this case, 973.505, 271.474).
I have about 800 of these output text files, and I was wondering if there's any sort of script or command that could go through them (presumably reading from a list of file names), and extract the coordinates. Ideally, the output would be a list of coordinates (i.e. X-coordinate, Y-coordinate).

View 2 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04.1GNOME desktopOK, If you right click on the Documents folder in you home profile and select "copy to desktop" you would assume that both folders would be synced because your basically creating a short-cut for main folder to the desktop.Assuming that these folders would sync made an *** out of me, I'm fining that I have to keep copying files from one "Documents folder" to the other one.I don't want to hear about Ubuntu One because that NOT what I trying to do. I don't want to share my folder I just want them both to contain the same information. I don't understand if you make a short-cut of a folder it SHOULD contain the same information as the parent directory, you shouldn't have to open both folders and hand-sync them. That's just stupid and redundant.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWell, wouldn't you just know it? I encountered problems when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 with update-manager. What a surprise. Anyway, here are the problems:1. Cannot enable desktop effects. Error appears after searching for drivers.
2. 2-3 minute boot times. Used to be 40 seconds. It spends 2 *minutes* in the BIOS before actually starting Ubuntu.
3. The volume controls on my laptop's keyboard now control PCM rather than Master, so everything is horrifically loud past three clicks, and two quiet under that.
4. The bootsplash displays at 1280x800, my monitor's resolution, and looks pretty. The log in screen, however, switches to what looks like 1024x768. When I log in it changes back to 1280x800.
5. Cannot boot into Windows from grub. When I select Windows, a blinking cursor appears in the top left corner and stays there. Nothing happens
I have 2 machines, 1 Ubuntu 10.10 with LTSP installed on it that works great and 1 Windows 2003 Server where I have Terminal server running.I also have DLink DNS-232 NAS where I do regular backups.I would like to transfer Ubuntu's users Home folder and Windows User folder to my DLink NAS and use it from there. Or at least find the way to link my home folders to NAS so all the files stay on one place so that users can use it from both servers without running any sync software or waiting for files to sync.

How can I change the mountpoint of my partition /media/documents to /documents.This is a partition of sdb and a fixed disk.The reason is that /media/ sometimes creates ghostdirectories while /Windows/C never does so, programmes writing/reading from this partition therfore don't work if a ghostdir_ exists.(BTW Suse is on sdb5 and sdb6. on sda is windows and used to be Ubuntu, the Suse-swap is sda5. Windows is out of use.)

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing ubuntu 64 bit, I installed all my updates and installed the current nvidia driver for my 9800 GTX+ from the additional drivers page. After restarting my computer, ubuntu boots into text mode. I used google and found out a couple of commands like:
After i hit control+alt+f7 it hangs on checking battery state with NO ok to the right of it. after running sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia -current and restarting the computer, the boot hangs on the ubuntu screen everytime.
My specs are:
Core i7 860
4 GB of ram
Nvidia 9800 GTX+
i am using unetbootin to create a live-usb of this iso: freemed-live-0.1-i386.iso (i think it is based on kubuntu). when i turn on my netbook with the usb plugged in i get about 6 menu items (default, live, live expert, linux, ...) but no matter which i select it takes me to some ubuntu text install where it is asking me to select language and keyboard layout.
is there a way make it boot to the live desktop ?
