Ubuntu :: Documents Folder Sent To Desktop Not Synced?

Aug 29, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04.1GNOME desktopOK, If you right click on the Documents folder in you home profile and select "copy to desktop" you would assume that both folders would be synced because your basically creating a short-cut for main folder to the desktop.Assuming that these folders would sync made an *** out of me, I'm fining that I have to keep copying files from one "Documents folder" to the other one.I don't want to hear about Ubuntu One because that NOT what I trying to do. I don't want to share my folder I just want them both to contain the same information. I don't understand if you make a short-cut of a folder it SHOULD contain the same information as the parent directory, you shouldn't have to open both folders and hand-sync them. That's just stupid and redundant.

Ubuntu :: Mapping Windows My Documents Folder To My Documents Folders

Dec 18, 2010

I can access my windows my documentsmusic by mounting my windows drive and browsing to it. I can then playwatch my movies and pics in Ubuntu. But what I really want to be able to do is re-map the Ubunbu docs folder like so:

Ubuntu Pics = Windows My Documents pics.
Ubuntu Videos = Windows My Documents Videos.

I'm not very unix savy so I've been using Ubuntu tweak PersonalDefault Folder Locations setting and browsing to my Windows folders. But it doesn't work.I have managed to make a desktop 'short cut' and that works but I'd rather set the system wide default document folders.

Is there a way to lock the folder so that the user and create/read/write documents in that folder but not delete the folder itself?

Ubuntu :: Documents Folder Recovery?

Apr 26, 2011

I have somehow 'disappeared' my Documents folder.I was working on an Open Office document, when I chose "File/Save As" this is the very unwelcome message that came up:/home/ray/documents does not exist. Looking in Places, sure enough it is gone! Looking in Trash the newest file / folder is April 17. Today is April 26.How I may have done this?I guess I'll find out how good my backups are..I need to hit the road for the rest of the day and may not see your responses until tomorrow.Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo R61iEdit:Well, now I've really embarrassed myself. I did find the contents of /home/ray/documents. I'll have to put it down to 'mouse tripping' Earlier I had needed to empty out a USB drive so I could use it this afternoon.

1 - Using Nautilus I created a folder in /home/ray/documents called called "8G holder" to hold the contents of the 8GiB USB drive for the evening.2 - The new folder did not appear to be created, so I did it again.Moved all of the USB contents over, wiped the USB drive and set it aside for use.It now seems that through mouse tripping I some how renamed documents, to "8G holder", created a second folder named "8G holder" in the first one.So now my question is much simpler. It is OK to rename the top "8G holder" to "Documents" and expect all to return to normal?Given that Linux is case sensitive should the name be "documents" or "Documents" ?

Ubuntu :: Lost All Documents Folder

Jul 30, 2011

Whilst clicking through my toolbar the other day I accidentally dragged a shortcut from my documents folder onto my desktop. Not particularly wanting it there and 'cut' not doing anything I tried 'Move To > Toolbar' and then made the somewhat dumbass mistake of pressing 'Merge' thinking that'd put it back. Instead it did exactly as it said it'd do (shock horror) and turned my documents folder into one unopenable link ie. 'The Link "Documents" is Broken. Move it to the Rubbish Bin? - This link cannot be used, because its target "/home/supergibbon/Documents" doesn't exist.'

Without any obvious Edit>Undo type option, I was hoping you may be able to get the folder back as I don't really want to lose all my documents.

May 11, 2010

When I installed Lucid and first switched language/locale settings, a window popped up asking me if I wanted to change the name of the Documents, Music, Video etc folders into the new language.

Originally I was worried that this might be some irreversible operation and said no and ticked the don't ask me again box.

It seems though that this is just a cosmetic operation and I'd quite like to use this function now. Does anyone know where I can change the setting to accomplish this?

Ubuntu :: Copy All The Pictures From Various Folders In Documents To A Single Folder

Dec 8, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I want to copy all the pictures from various folders in my Documents to a single folder. So in Nautilus, I clicked on Places > Search for Files. Then chose the Documents folder and typed *.jpg in the search criteria. It found all of my pictures just fine. However it would not let me copy and paste them into a folder I put on my desktop. Copy is not on the "right" click menu and Ctrl C did not work for the highlighted search results. This is so simple in Windows but it does not seem to work in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Create Folder',and Results In An Empty Folder Being Created On Desktop?

Oct 29, 2010

I have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same). With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above. But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu, which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder. Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place

Ubuntu :: Desktop Keeps Crashing When Renaming Folder Under Folder View Plasmoid?

Jun 17, 2011

Running kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ xrender and folder-view plasmoid:

I cannot view "open with" for directories on the desktop (but it is visible w/in dolphin file structure) and whenever I try to rename folders on the desktop it crashes and restarts (but the rename is successful and no open windows crash).

This glitch is reproducible under OpenGL and Xrender; had to switch over to xrender after a recent system update that seems to slow my computer to a crawl after a little time and kept it cause it seems much smoother and crisper.

Is there any way to fix these issues or is there an alternative to the folder-view plasmoid to view a folder content on the desktop that is more stable?

Ubuntu :: Create A Link To "My Documents" Folder On XP Partition?

Apr 14, 2010

I've recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic as a dual boot with WinXP and love it. I've been able to mount my WinXP partition and can access files read/write successfully.

I'd like my WinXP "My Documents" folder to appear as a linked folder in my Linux Home directory.

I think I should be able to use the ln command, but I can't figure it out.

I've tried to create a link that will appear like a "folder" called WinDocs in my Home directory with this command, run from my Home folder:

ln -t /dev/sda1/Documents and Settings/richard/My Documents/ /WinDocs/

but it reports

ln: accessing `/dev/sda1/Documents and Settings/richard/My Documents/': Not a directory

I get the same results if I try /dev/hda1 etc.

I can see the contents of the folder currently in my Places listing. Its shortcut is active on my desktop.

Ubuntu :: IPod Touch Not Displaying Synced Files

Jan 11, 2011

after i solved the many other problems that plagued me as an early adopter of the new iPod touch, I took my freshly recovered device (iOS 4.1, on an ipod touch 4G) and tried syncing with Rythmbox and Banshee. It shows up on the GUI as a music player and a camera, I press sync on rythmbox or banshee and it works out. But when the sync is over and I look at my device I find no songs on there, but they're inside the itunes_control file in my ipod when I view the file contents from ubuntu.

I have succeeded in syncing with iOS 4.1 before, but an error forced me to restore my iPod. But that was when I had a jailbroken ipod with the DBversion changed to 2 as per many guides on the internet. But I thought all of these problems were solved with the new libimobiledevice 1.04.

General :: Osx - Keep Folders Synced And Backed Up Between Two Macs Using A NAS (rsync)

Sep 16, 2011

I've got two primary computers, one Mac Pro and one MacBook Pro for when I'm on the go. I've also got a Linux sever which also acts as NAS. Currently I backup the entire computers to an external drive with Time Machine which is rather useless and doesn't sync anything. What I really want to do is to keep my important files synced between both computers and my NAS (which is running RAID 5), that way I'm not backing up easily replaceable systemfiles and I've got all my important files in 3 places where two of them are running raid so at least 5 drives would have to crash at the same time before actual data loss occur.

Folders I want to keep synced is basically my photo, documents, development, mamp and work folders and then I want to keep the user library folder backed up but not synced. I'm thinking that I'd have to use rsync but don't know how. Before suggesting Dropbox and similar suggestions I don't want to use them because of several reasons some of them being security (Dropbox obviously proved this), Speed (sometimes I'll sync gigabytes of data and that will be significantly faster locally and probably even through VPN as I have a Gigabit pipe), Space (space on my NAS is cheap and only practically limited by my needs), reliability (even if my internet were to go down I still need to be able to keep my files synced incase I'd need to go somewhere on the fly), price (I already have all the hardware and for the amount of gigabytes and bandwidth I'd need I doubt that there's any free or cheap service). Those are my main reason for wanting to keep it locally.

Ubuntu Servers :: Create Script To Keep Machine Cluster Synced Properly Until Failover

Apr 26, 2010

I've been reading up on clustering a bit and want to create simple 2 machine cluster of which the 2nd one will turn on and take over traffic at the previous machine's IP (I'm aware there will be a couple minutes of downtime while the failover server boots). I've looked into doing a simple DNS round robin, but I think both machines would need to be online all the time for this to function correctly. I've also looked into linux-HA and GlusterFS but both seem a little intense for the simple failover I'm trying to achieve. One catch if approaching with DNS round robin... the server that I want to setup with a failover also operates as a DNS server. Anyone know the simplest way to complete this? One idea I had (that seemed like a bit of manual work): Create script that runs every 60 secs through CRON on firewall (running pfsense) and have it check if master-server is up. If it's not, it will send a WOL signal to the slave, which has a mirrored image of the first. the problem I have with that is I will also need to create a script to keep both synced properly which seems almost impossible if one is shut down until failover (my thought was periodic rsyncs.) Perhaps creating a FS to direct all files to for the master/slave would be the only way around that.
