Jul 28, 2010How do get Ubuntu to recognize a monitor? I am not able to change resolution which is very annoying. The page is too big on the monitor so I have to scroll at everything I read.

Fedora Hardware :: External Monitor Not Detected - Dell Laptop - Monitor
Aug 17, 2011My software and hardware information are as follows. I have Fedora 12 and KDE 4.4.5 installed on a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. I believe it's a 64 bit processor; it's an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The external monitor is a Dell as well.
My problem is that my system does not seem to be detecting an external monitor that I have connected. Everything else is working just fine; however, I would like to have the option of attaching an external monitor. When I plug the external monitor into the laptop, the external monitor remains black and appears to be in power save mode. The results of xrandr -q (with or without the external monitor attached: it doesn't appear to change) are as follows.

How can I get my laptop to recognize that the external monitor is even connected? Let me know if I can be more specific or provide additional details.

Nov 21, 2010I have installed openSuse 11.3, my computer is a Dell Vostro 1500, it has a modem, but is not recognized between the devices. I do not know why. I have not the slightest.Please, someone with enough intelligence to be humble to explain clearly and explicitly that the system can I identify and mount my modem, and can make use of it.If by chance you need some additional information, please specify to me how I can get to the place in this thread.

Nov 4, 2010An "Asus VK222S" monitor has been incorrectly recognized as an "Ancor Communications Inc 22" by a fresh Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 installation. This is causing a vertical band of about 5cm, in the middle of the screen, to be out of focus/blurred. The problem was not present with the same monitor on other systems.

When running lspci the usb is listed as unknown device. When loading 2.6.26-2-bigmem kernel in the same computer the usb devices work fine.

May 14, 2010I have recently upgraded to Lucid with a clean install. I have two NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT cards with 3 21" monitors connected to them (two to card 1, 1 to card 2 although sometimes I plug in my projector so its 2 to both).I previously had Karmic installed and was able to use all three (or four) monitors without any problems. Now, however, Nvidia-settings only recognizes the one GPU. It will only recognize one or the other. If I edit xorg.conf so that Screen0 is on PCI:3 instead of PCI:1 (where my two cards are located) It will switch over to that GPU, but I can not get both to work together at the same time.
I have tried using my old xorg.conf but it does not work. I've tried editing the current xorg to have one monitor running off of each card and it will not work.

May 5, 2011If I go under system preferences then monitor It says me that my monitor is not been reconized. I've got the nvidia proprietary driver enabled. ubuntu v.11.04 (Natty)
I've also noticed that my headphone's led jask is always on! Looking around I've found It could be an hardware problem only if built-in audio isn't working but I've got no problem with it.

May 8, 2011I actually do have a GeForce4 MX 460 in this pc. I have a 7950gt in a different pc. Oops. I guess the MX 460 cant do 1600x1200 on the dvi output but somehow it can do it on the vga output? I guess I could just use a vga connection instead of the dvi connection.
The problem I'm having is that my LCD monitor (acer AL2021) can't be used at it's native resolution of 1600x1200. This is probably because my GeForce 7950gt graphics card is not being recognized. Xorg seems to think my card is a GeForce4 M 460. (It's not, really!) I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Here's what I've been doing for the last few hours:
This didn't work. 1600x1200 is still not listed.

Jun 15, 2010I have problem with resolution (@gnom desktop). In Yast --> videocard & monitor is all right. There is correct resolution 1366x768 (WXGA). Also the videocard ( I don't have really one, only chipset "Intel Mobile GM45" ) is correct recognized. But Monitor isn't recognized, and I don't know which one I have (It's notebook from acer).
Nevertheless if I go direct in monitor preferences (at the bottom the monitor with a ruler symbol) the resolution is set to 800x600 and I can only change to 640x480. The monitor is as 15" recognized (I have 15.4", even a bit more broadly - 1366x768) and now I don't know what to do. All symbols, all programs, everything is huge! How is it possible to configure the correct one resolution?

I tried installing nVidia's official Linux drivers but received an error that no compatible device is present. Going into System > Preferences > Display shows only my first two monitors. Feb 24, 2010I have recently installed ubuntu using wubi on a dimension 9100 PC.When i boot up ubuntu I get a message that it cannot display current video mode when the GUI tries to launch. The monitor is a Dell E173FPb.From digging about on google it seems I need to edit the xorg.conf file? However, it doesn't exist in the /etc/X11 directory. Does wubi not create this file?
I then created a template of this xorg.conf with the "sudo X -configure" command. I then copied the created file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and editied the Monitor settings. however, I still get the same error even when I put in the HorizSync and VerRefresh settings shown on the Dell webpage (31-80 and 56-76 respectively).

Sep 11, 2010I was on earlier 9.x version of ubuntu with following configuration working perfectly: IBM ThinkPad T60 with ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400 VGA graphics card (found it from lspci) With an external Dell 19" monitor attached to it. I upgraded yesterday to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and now the Dell monitor screen keeps flickering all the time! I always work with an external bigger monitor attached to my laptop as working for long hours on the smaller screen of the laptop gives me headache. The frustrating point is, this setting was working perfectly until I was on Ubuntu 9.x, I upgraded to 10.04 LTS and this has stopped working.

Hardware :: Dell LCD Monitor Slow When Using Console?
Aug 5, 2010The 14" (pretty sure of the size) LCD monitor is hooked up with "digital input" (not the VGA or whatever). I tend to use the console (i.e. ttyX) more than X windows, and it is extremely slow refreshing. A concrete example is opening a man page, or cat-ing a file go so slow it takes a second or 2 for them to fully display.

Aug 1, 2011I have a dell monitor, E153FPf, with an intel chipset 865G. I just changed from Debian to Open Suse 11.4. In Debian, everything worked fine. However, with Suse, every time I open a new window in Gnome, the screen will flash at about a 1 Hz rate, showing the new window, and then immediately revert to the previously displayed window.
If I change to a different workspace, and then change back again, the display works properly . . . until I open or close a new application window.I made sure YaST2 had the correct refresh and resolution; I downloaded and installed the latest Intel drivers, I enabled the correct horizontal and vertical refresh rates in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-Monitor.conf - all to no avail. I have searched around for answers, but most of the issues seem to be with monitors not working at all - not new or closed applications not refreshing the screen properly.

May 9, 2010I'm running OpenSuse 11.1 with a Dell Inspiron 6400. I just bought a Medion Multi-Touchscreen-Monitor cos they were going cheap at the local supermarket. It says the touchscreen works with Windoze 7 only, but I thought its worth a go as I have 30 days to try before taking it back.
The monitor output works fine. I had to adjust the resolution setting but that's okay. However, when I plug in the touchscreen usb lead I've no success yet. I tried all the touchscreen Vendor/Name options in Yast->Hardware->graphics card/monitor but to no avail.

Mar 22, 2010My brother has just installed 9.10 on his Inspiron 6400 and would like to have a dual screen setup using both the laptop display and a flatscreen attached to the VGA socket. Using the standard display options, the two displays are recognised and when the 'mirror screens' option is disabled then settings applied it works to the extent of allowing the cursor to move between the two monitors; however the monitors display nothing except a black screen and the cursor.
I've updated everything to the current version, had a look for restricted drivers (none are suggested by the GUI tool thing) and checked both displays work (both independently and as mirrored). I also had a look for an xorg.conf to poke around in but there wasn't one there.

May 21, 2010I am posting this to hear if there are others with display issues on Dell E6500 laptop with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 160 driver. This problem is starting to annoy me a great deal, but I am uncertain how I should move forward. In short; I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed on my Dell E6500 laptop. When using only the laptop, everything works great. The second I plug it into the docking station (the laptop lid closed) and want to use my two external monitors (Dell 2001FP) I'm in trouble. I cant see anything and what I get is a 'DVI: Cannot Display this Mode' on the primary monitor - If i try a regular VGA cable I get nothing but a black screen.
I have played around with the Nvidia config but it cant find my monitors and therefore I cant do much. I am aware of the various "hack the xorg.conf" options, but I before I do that I wanted to see if others had experienced the same thing. I had hoped that we were pasted the hack stage and that primary functions such as display would work by now.

Feb 24, 2010I am now installing the CentOS5.4 with a DVD on a Windows machine. The video card is ATI Radeon HD 3450, and monitor is Dell 1909W. During the install, after recognizing the ATI card, and starting the xserver, the screen came up with a message saying " The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display.
Please change your input timing to 1440X900@60Hz or any other monitor listed timing as per the monitor specification. "
However, in Windows XP the monitor is configured as 1440X900@60Hz, which works well. Due to this problem, the GUI installation cannot proceed. And how can I fix this problem if I manage to install in the text mode.
