Ubuntu :: DVD/CD Game Installation Fails (Read-only/unmarked Executable)?

Nov 5, 2010

I am trying to install a game to use with WINE from a CD I have lying around. However, the game installer isn't a marked executable file, and I am unable to make it one because I only have read access to the disk.(Using Ubuntu 10.10)Is there anything I can do hereDIT:Nevermind, Just like me, I try for hours and solve it the moment I tell someone about it.running wine setup.exe from the terminal seems to have done the trick.

Ubuntu :: Give Read And Write Permissions To Game Folder?

Aug 6, 2010

Just finished downloading a game in .run format, i downloaded it to my Home>Downloads folder and ran these commands in terminal: (game is tremulous if it matters)

chmod +x tremulous.run
./tremulous.run

It started it up in the terminal and i began working my way through the installation process, and i tried to install it into my Home>Games folder. (Is it supposed to be home>games or your username>games?)

and it said PERMISSION DENIED. No write permission to Home/Games/

How do i give myself read and write permissions to my game folder?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Fails To Read Pre-existent Partition Table?

There is also a storage partition that is fat32 to swap files between the two OSes. So the partitions are:

General :: Kickstart Installation Fails With Error Failed To Read Rpm Header?

Dec 16, 2010

I am running into a strange problem where kickstart installation fails with Error failed to read Rpm header, This happens when installation starts formatting of disk is also completed some of the rpms installed and then suddenly installer stalls with failed to read rpm header.

I have kept kickstart and install media on same host. I have changed the install media from http/nfs/ftp just to check is there any problem with the media but no luck.

However same installation with the same kickstart file works fine when both install media and ks file is kept on another linux host.

I am using RHEL 4 ,I do checked /var/log/messages it does not give any information on the failure and this started happening recently till that i was using the same server for my linux deployment.

Note: pxe setup, boot server ,install media and ks file all are in same server.

Slackware :: After Rebooting The Game Works, But On Ending The Game Several Notification Boxes Remain?

Jun 1, 2010

This game is Java based. After rebooting the game works, but on ending the game several notification boxes remain. If these boxes are not closed in the reverse order that the game opened them, it is no longer possible to close them. Only by killing the Java processes can these notifications be made to close. Also after playing the game, even if all these notifications are closed it is many times necessary to kill the Java process(es) in order to get the game to load again at a later time. I am currently using Slackware 1.30, but a similar problem has existed in several of the past releases.

CentOS 5 :: Booting CentOS V5.2 Fails With GRUB Error 13: Invalid Executable Format?

May 5, 2009

I'm trying to install a dual booting machine with OpenSUSE v11.1 32bit and CentOS v5.2 64bit. I installed OpenSUSE first and allowed it to install and configure grub in the MBR and after that I wanted to proceed with CentOS v5.2. The installation went fine with two notable exceptions:- when I had to configure grub installation parameters, CentOS offered me only 2 solutions: either install it on the MBR of the first hard disk or not installing it at all. Other distributions are more flexible allowing you to install it in the boot sector of the root partition for example. Because I didn't want to ruin the existent grub onfiguration, I reluctantly accepted not to install it for CentOS assuming that I could manually configure the entry later in grub's menu.lst file.

- when I was presented with the options for software components installation, I've clicked on virtualization category/function because I intend to use the machine as a VMware host. There was no guidance on screen at that point and I blindly assumed that by choosing the virtualization function I would get necessary tools and drivers that will help me further on. It seems that this was a wrong move as you can see it below.

After completing the installation, I tried to search for a template or guiding on how the menu entry in menu.lst should look like but the grub directory was empty, not surprisingly because I've told CentOS earlier not to install it. Using the files in the /boot directory from the CentOS installation I tried to improvise a menu entry but it's not working. The boot stops with famous Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format. Using the file command to check what kind of files I'm trying to load as kernels I'm getting :

marte:~ # file /mnt/vmlinuz-2.6.18-92.el5xen
/mnt/vmlinuz-2.6.18-92.el5xen: gzip compressed data, from Unix, last modified: Tue Jun 10 19:20:51 2008, max compression

Ubuntu :: Startup - Unmarked The "show The Screen For Choosing Who Will Log In"

Aug 26, 2010

I've set up the pc to power on automatically and start downloading at a certain time, so I went to System>Administration>login screen and unmarked the "show the screen for choosing who will log in" and I marked the "log in as me automatically". but when the pc starts, it gets logged in but doesn't do the things I've ordered it to do, and still needs me to fill the password for unlocking the login keyring. (I want to get rid of that as well)

The other problem is with my connections, I have 2 DSL connectionss, one that I browse the web during day and the other one that is free and I do downloads with it. I've ticked the connect automatically for the free connection, so that when my pc is up it gets connected automatically and then torrent will start up after and work. But I've realized if after the startup, the connection is not connected, it doesn't try again, however if it gets connected it remains connected for as long as it can be, the problem is only the first try. (If there is some problem with connecting at that certain time of startup and then the problem is gone, it won't connect automatically.)

Fedora Hardware :: F12 Boot Fails - Short Block Read

Jun 11, 2010

My F12 installation, which was installed on an HP tx2500z laptop and has been operating relatively well since January, now fails to boot after a frozen screen precipitated a forced shutdown. On reboot, I was dropped into a shell with the error message "Error reading block 1546 (Attempt to read block from file system resulted in a short read) while getting next inode from scan." recommending to run fsck manually. During the fsck run, after a substantial number of Pass 1 inode count corrections, the "Error reading block" message reappeared, with the question "Ignore error<y>" to which I answered "y".

fsck responded with "Force rewrite<y>". Since I did not know what would be written here, I said "no". I then forced shutdown, rebooted into Windows, and searched for further guidance. One suggestion was to run fsck -y on the affected partition. My laptop drive has four partitions, the first two being allocated to Windows and an HP supplied repair partition. sda3 is a tiny boot partition (100 MB), and sda4/5 is the LVM remainder.

fsck -y /dev/sda3 told me the boot partition was fine.
fsck -y /dev/sda4 stopped immediately and asked "Could this be a zero-length file partition?". Given the ext3 structure, I suppose the correct answer is yes.
fsck -y /dev/sda5 told me fsck.LVM2_Member: not found.

Following this, I then attempted again to reboot, and ran fsck without options. Once again, during Pass 1, Block 1546 exhibited the short read error, again asking about a rewrite - which I once again answered no. Pass 1 completed with another substantial number of inode count corrections, and Pass 2 started - immediately generating the message:

'passwd' in /etc/pam.d (65556) has deleted/unused node 7831. Clear<y>

After some hesitancy, I said "yes", and of course a second similar message appeared. I was brave enough to answer "yes" six more times, with the first two referring to /etc/pam.d inodes, and the next four referring to /etc/security/console.apps inodes. The eighth message, also similar, referred to inodes elsewhere - but by now I did not dare to continue and forced shutdown. Is this repairable, and if so, how?

Ubuntu Installation :: Porting A Game Engine From Visual Studio To GCC?

Sep 29, 2010

I am a software developer, presently porting a game engine from Visual Studio to GCC. I'm working on LTS 10.04. The project uses C++ lambdas, and I really would like to keep it this way. Therefore, I need GCC >= 4.5 to compile it.

I wouldn't like to reinstall entire OS, or to have to manually update this single program every time. Is there an option to update it from 10.10 repositories, pointing out, that I need only this package (and it's dependencies)? Or is there any PPA that does the trick for me?

Generally, the entire packaging system of Ubuntu rocks, as long as I can find up-to-date PPAs of all packages I need to have in recent versions (like mono).

I therefore wish to install 'wine' on my system in order to run the corresponding Windows set-up files (which are executable files). I am running Linux Mint version 10 on my system.

Installation :: Can't Boot Windows (GRUB) / Invalid Or Unsupported Executable Format?

Feb 1, 2010

On my Laptop is an 80 GB HD. I installed Windows XP first (at this point it worked perfectly) then installed on the same HD, but on other partitions Archlinux.

The whole thing looks like this now:

/dev/sda1 <--- Windows xp
/dev/sda2 <--- arch linux (/, etc, etc^^)
/dev/sda3 <--- homes
/dev/sda4 <--- boot partition (grub)

(I got no SWAP partition, I got 4gb RAM (well can only use 3, since my system doesn't support 64bit), and my friend told me there's no absolute need for a a swap :>)

Arch Linux is booting perfectly (and very fast), but Windows XP doesn't want to boot anymore :>
(Just if it's from any importance: In the partition program I took the "bootable" flag away from my XP Partition and set it to sda4 - I thought I need to do that, but now I'm not so sure anymore :P )

My entry in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like this (I also tried various others)

title Windows
root (hd0,1)
makeactive
chainloader +1

When I boot and choose the Windows XP in the GRUB boot menu, the following message appears:

error 13: invalid or unsupported executable format

When I set root(hd0,1) to root(hd0,0) (what seemed the most logical to me) and boot again selecting the windows xp, then the GRUB cosole appears.

So what did I do wrong - or better said: what should I do now?
