Ubuntu :: Create An Updated Installation Media?

Jun 8, 2010

I would like to know the quickest way to create either an ISO or bootable USB media that contains all the updates since the release of 10.04 for easy installations in environments that have slow Internet or no Internet. What would you all suggest?

Fedora Installation :: Update Media's Repo Information To Reflect Some Of Updated Packages

May 13, 2011

I am creating custom install media using the Fedora Core 14 DVD as a base and I have gathered all of the packages and their dependencies I require using the yumdownloader command.I made sure to download the @core group along with the ones listed above. The problem I'm running into is that I don't know how to update the media's repo information to reflect some of the updated packages I have downloaded. So when I go to install on the device, it's saying it can't read/open a certain package and you can see that it's looking for an older version because I'm guessing its repo is telling anaconda that this is the specific version to look for. I'm looking for a way to "update" the repo found on the installation media.

General :: Create A Media Server Using Ubuntu?

Apr 28, 2010

I'm an intermediate Linux user and a relative beginner to servers. I would like some help finding resources on setting up a basic server. I have Googled, and am a member of the Ubuntu Forums, but just figure it can't hurt to ask the Stack Overflow community for help as well. I plan on installing on an old laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad R61i or Toshiba Satellite A105). I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu (9.10) but don't know how to do any of the configurations.

I just want a server to store my files where I can access (download and/ or stream) from a browser.

Ubuntu :: Create Shortcut To Media Folder In Home Directory?

Dec 14, 2010

I currently have an ASUS eebox which is running XBMC Live which includes a stripped down version of Ubuntu. The computer will be used by various people within a teaching environment and I have successfully installed launchers for Openoffice which can be opened within XBMC.

I am trying to the make the experience for the end user as simple as possible as the vast majority will have never used Linux before. I want to get to a point where they can open Openoffice, plug in their USB stick and navigate quickly to their files. At the moment when the program is launched and I try and navigate for a file it automatically starts in the Home Folder of xbmc. So I have navigate up a couple of times, then find the /media directory where the USB stick has been mounted and so on. What I was hoping to do is create a shortcut within the Home Directory which takes you straight to the Media folder where usb is mounted.

I have already attempted and created a folder within the Home directory and called it usbpen.

I have then added the following line into fstab /media /home/xbmc/usbpen none bind 0 0

Now when I reboot the machine and navigate to the home/xbmc/usbpen folder I can see the Drive name of the USB device mounted in /media but I cannot navigate through any of the files, I am greeted with a read error message. So the shortcut is only allowing me to see the device name only.

be aware that due to running XBMC Live I do not have a Windows manager installed and therefore everything must be done through the terminal.

Ubuntu Installation :: Usb Flash Disk Cannot Be Updated?

Feb 16, 2010

I just installed ubuntu 9.10 on a 4GB usb stick given the menu item at the top. I selected 512MB for my own user space. then I rebooted, and started updating it. I am getting almost 200 packages by default now that need to be updated.

alas, ubuntu live update now runs out of space while doing the update. this is not because 4GB is too little, but because too little space seems to be dedicated to the root partition.

what is the recommended way to have an up-to-date 9.10 copy now?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Into Updated Kernel ?

Jul 8, 2010

I recently updated the kernel of lucid from 2.6.32-22 to the ""-23 release through update manager. Now whenever i try to boot the new kernel from GRUB the screen goes black and the computer stops responding with the caps lock and scroll lock lights flashing on the keyboard.

I can still boot into ""-22 fine and keep using ubuntu.

My first thought that the problem was the newer kernel itself so I tried to update to 2.6.33-5 from [url]but the same boot problem exists within this one also.

Because it goes straight into the black screen after GRUB I have no way of telling what has happened without error messages. Would this appear in any log files and if so which ones?

Ubuntu Installation :: Updated Kernel Will Not Boot ?

Nov 28, 2010

I recently upgraded Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.35 on x86/x86_64 from 2.6.35-22 to 2.6.35-23. and my system will not reboot to the upgraded kernel. To reboot I have to force shutdown my Toshiba L-450 laptop and the restart. This brings me to the GRUB screen were I can choose to use the previous 2.6.35-22. Normally do not see the GRUB screen as I am only running Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on this computer. I have tried reinstalling linux-headers-2.6.35-23 and linux-headers-2.6.35-23-generic and got the same result.

Ubuntu Installation :: Jaunty 9.04 Updated And Now Firefox Died

Feb 8, 2010

I have Jaunty 9.04 and I was sitting online yesterday and the update manager came up. I let it do its thing as usual, but it seemed to have an issue with some firefox related package (having to do with branding?) and then the little flipping-out icon showed up in my tray saying that a package broke. It did not, and the firefox launcher turned into a missing puzzle brick and clicking it causes a small window to come up with the following message:

XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
Location: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul
Line Number 31, Column 1:<window id="main-window"
^
So I might have tried to uninstall firefox from synaptic or something, but this just created more errors and I don't think it worked properly anyway. Inside Synaptic, there is one listed as a "broken" package in the broken filter. It is something to do with Firefox Branding AMD64 and all that goodness.

The funny thing is that I can boot with the older kernel fine, But I would really like to get the lates updates, which I can't using the older kernel.

Ubuntu Installation :: Updated To 10.04 And Now Monitor Frequency Is Out Of Range

May 1, 2010

I just updated my Wubi install of 9.10 to 10.04 last night. Everything went well until it required me to reboot the computer. I rebooted, loaded Ubuntu from the startup list, and then the screen went blank and I got "H.V. frequency over range" on the monitor.

I can load the GRUB options, but recovery mode using the most recent kernel does not work. I am entirely unexperienced with using the terminal and command prompt options.

Here's what I have attempted so far:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg this did not do anything, the command was not recognized

$sudo nano xorg.config I don't even know what to do when I get to this screen

and I am about to try $ sudo displayconfig-gtk

I have an ATI Radeon 9100 IGP card

Ubuntu Installation :: Updated Grub But Still Won't Recognize 2nd Partition?

Jul 24, 2010

So I am experimenting with other linux distros.....I just installed a small partition with OpenGEU, the one still based on Ubuntu.....now it wont recognize Mint. Ubuntu Studio is next on my list, but before I invest any more work I want to make sure I can add more partitions to grub, not just the most recent linux partition...

I think that future distros of linux should have a fix for this....if you install linux it should detect every other operating system on the disk, not just windows plus the most recent linux install.

install /boot separate? I always create a / and /home partition but never separate boot. Does that make life easier?

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic Grub Updated And Destroyed Itself

Jul 26, 2010

I'm a GRUB novice, unfortunately. My system is a 7-year old Dell tower. Two hard drives, each sliced up into a bunch of ~30 GB partitions. I dual-boot WinXP and Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10. I think I have GRUB2, but don't know how to check without being able to boot. This problem arose during a standard upgrade when I didn't pay attention and GRUB updated and apparently destroyed itself. Now when I boot my system, I get the following message:

Code:
Booting from local disk...
GRUB loading.
error: no such disk
grub rescue>

Almost every fix I found in my searching involved:
Code:
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
but none of the solutions said what to do if that file wasn't found.

When I boot from my Ubuntu install DVD, I can mount my various partitions and browse their filesystems, so it appears that my data is all still intact, I just can't get to it. What should I try next?

Ubuntu kernel version x.x.x-24

Ubuntu Installation :: Updated From 9.10 - Grub Rescue (No Such Device)

Sep 23, 2010

Here is a brief history of my problem:

-Ran Windows XP Media Center for most of the life of this HP Pavilion notebook with 2 hard drives, C: and D:, no partitions except the default HP recovery partition

-Yesterday, installed Ubuntu 9.10 through Wubi on D: from an ISO (because the CD drive doesn't work). I assigned it 30gb on D:, which I assume created a 30gb FAT32 partition on this secondary drive.

-Dual booted successfully from Grub between XP and Ubuntu, so I thought, "Mission accomplished" and started making friends with GNOME. Got a pretty good score in Tetris.

-Was asked if I would like to update to the latest Ubuntu (10.04 I think?) which struck me as a good idea. Everything went smoothly until it asked me to reboot.

-Reboot brought me to a command-line that says "grub rescue>" and above it says "error: no such device: e76e00f3-........" (there's more, I can write it out if that helps)

-Rebooted several more times (cause that usually fixes things) but just got back to "error: no such device: ..." and "grub rescue>"

And that's where I am now. I have almost no experience with how Linux (UNIX?) works differently than Windows or how to use the command line. I know that the hard drives are (hd0), (hd1) instead of C: and D: and that everything important seems to start with "sudo" and that's about it. I was going to ease myself into the whole thing gradually, picking up little bits as I go along. But now I'm just stuck in command line limbo and none of my usual troubleshooting strategies apply here, not even yelling rude things about the computer's manufacturer.
