Ubuntu :: Create Web Shortcuts In Favorites?
Sep 19, 2010
Have just put Ubuntu Netbook Remix on an old laptop for parental units. They pick it up in thirty minutes. I have got the bloody Broadcom wireless working. I have got Skype set up. I have done everything except put some web shortcuts to pages like Yahoo Mail on the Favourites page because... the Hell? How do I do that?
No, bookmarks in Firefox aren't good enough. I want a friendly icons on their desktop. This has to be incredibly obvious

I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 without a gui. I'd like to add a new keyboard shortcut to the system, but I've searched the forum, googled, read a couple of linux books and hunted through the man pages and I can't find anything explaining how to do it. I know that the '/etc/init' directory contains the file 'control-alt-delete.conf' for the 'ctrl-alt-del' shortcut, but looking at that file didn't give me any indication of how to create any new shortcuts. Surely there must be some way to add new keyboard shortcuts to a server system.

I simply cannot find anyway to create a simple desktop shortcut. I am Using Linux Ubuntu 11.04 with the Unity Interface. I love the panel on the side, but I would also like simple desktop shortcuts also. I can't do it. I tried dragging them on and nothing, I tried right clicking to see if there was an option and nothing. Where can I do this?

Like always Linux likes to make the easy tasks in life a little bit more difficult.
I have a NAS and Ubuntu 10.x I like to make a shortcut from a folder on the NAS drive to the desktop.
If i right click on the file and click 'Make Link' it tells me that the target does not support symbolic links.
So what can I do to make it happen?
is there maybe a way so mount the NAS like a fixed system disk? Because from the system disc I am able to make links.

I'm in a situation where we might see a few Ubuntu machines added to the fleet of systems here at work (school district). A problem that I'm facing is I would like to do a very, very simple task in Ubuntu, which is to create a shortcut share to a network resource. On Windows, you can right click - new - shortcut - \servershare, done. Then when you click on it, you have the appropriate permissions within the folder based on what permission settings exist on the actual server where the folder resides.
In Ubuntu, the closest I can get is to create these shortcut links on the left side of Nautilus in the bookmark pane. Here's the part that rages me to no end. If I log out and back in, they're ALL renamed to "smb". LOL. What. Really? I'd like to create shortcuts for several network resources. I'd like these links to either be within the Nautilus bookmark area, or within the desktop itself. Ubuntu is on the domain,

I just installed SUSE 11.4/KDE4.6 and some apps - including the pgAdmin3 GUI client app for PostgreSQL database. AFAIK the apps were installed and the correct files appear in their respective folders.
One of the progs I need is pgAdmin3 which exists in the /usr/bin folder. However when I try to launch this from the app launcher the file is not found. (If I start from a terminal command it works correctly).
I'd like to be able to create either a shortcut or app menu entry to launch this app. However if I right click on the file (in the Dolphin fm) there is no 'Create Shortcut' option. AFAIK I though this used to work.

How can I create shortcut from one ftp folder to another using SFTP client such as WinSCP with Putty?
For example, application path is /home/primary/webapps/appication/
We have created new user with default home directory /home/secondary/
Using Bash command:
setfacl -R -m u:secondary:rwx /home/primary/webapps/appication/
we added full Read-Write permission for secondary user.
To access application folder he suppose to type full path to application folder which is not so convenient for daily usage.
As a solution I would like to create some shortcuts in home directory to this folders as I seen something similar in default cPanel configuration where PUBLIC_HTML folder has some alias such as WWW.

Does anyone know how to make custom keyboard shortcuts? The commands don't seem to cross over to the system>preferences>keyboard shortcuts utility. For example, I added the file browser to my desktop. I right click, select properties, and the command is:
However, when I add a custom shortcut with that same command it doesn't work.

Every time I logout and log back in the Unity panel resets to its default state. I'd like it to save my favourite applications and their locations on the panel. I'm completely updated and thought this might be a permission issue or some such. I wanted to see if anyone had this problem or if anyone knew where unity saved its files before I filed a false bug report.

I have a new Fedora 15 installation on my Lenovo T61 laptop. I have converted it from Windows 7 and am having some trouble getting it set up as desired. In particular, I am trying to add an executable link to a .jar file to my Activities Favorites bar.
I have tried right-clicking the icon from the Activities Application display to add to favorites like I can do with any other application but right-clicking does nothing. Dragging to the favorites bar does not work either. When I click on the icon, it just opens the Archive Manager so that may be related to the problem. The .jar file does actually run but I have to find it in the file manager, right click and then select Open With Java. what can I do to add a link in the Activities Favorites bar that opens my .jar file?

Although this questions is not directly related to Linux and is more browser specific. I want to know is there any way that all my browsers have same set of bookmarks/favorites. I currently have 3 browsers that I use (chrome, Mozilla, and IE8) if I add a bookmark to one of my favorites is it possible to access the same bookmark list is some different browser. Is this possible?

I installed IE 6.0 with ies4linux on Ubuntu Desktop. After closing IE6, I am unable to restart it after calling IE via command line or by clicking on the desktop icon, without restarting my computer. When I run ps -a I can see IExplorer.exe running but no browser appears. The same with IE 5.5. Is there something I have to configure?
I also have difficulty with the "Favorites" menu in IE under Wine. I can only bookmark urls by creating them in the default "Links" folder they provide. Otherwise, the Favorite does not appear in the drop-down menu. Nor does it appear if I create another folder or rename the Links folder. Is this a bug in IE on Wine? Or is this related to a problem in the installation?

Is it possible to somehow open Nautilus file manager, or favorites, or places items using hotkey(s)? Simply going to the launcher just to open the file manager is annoying, and I'd really find it convenient to somehow launch the Nautilus using hotkey(s)

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 (with Gnome) and everything went smoothly. Very nice. Now I'm trying to add some additional keyboard shortcuts, but the new ones I add don't work. I can change the keybindings for existing shortcuts (for example, I changed goto workspace 1 to Alt+1 and this works), but I can't add a new shortcut. Specifically, I'm trying to make Alt+F1..F4 move current window to workspace 1..4 but this won't work. Nothing happens when I press the shortcut. Same problem if I try to add a shortcut to any other command that didn't already have one.

I'm a xubuntu 10.04 user and i recently tried to create a keyboard shortcut to launch the Terminal. I went into Settings -> Xfce Settings Manager -> keyboard
I chose the "application shortcut" tab and there I realized that the "add" function behaves very strangely.
A window pops upp with a text entry that lets me add a command name, but nothing to enter the shortcut's name. Anyhow, whatever I write in there, the window closes when I enter OK and nothing more happens.
I also tried to change the shortcuts from the Window Manager and nothing can be edited there either.

I'm using 11.04 with Ubuntu Classic. I can not ALT+Tab anymore, or use any of the Super shortcuts. I did not upgrade. I used clean install. I can't use any Super key shortcuts either. In 10.10 I could use Super + A to show all windows, it was really handy, now I can't. I have Compiz enabled and everything, along with the advanced config program. Where do I go to enable these features (if they are even in Natty at all?) I have Expose and Desktop Wall module of Compiz enabled, by the way. Strangely enough, it does work in Unity now, I don't know why. It does not work in Ubuntu Classic.

Not sure if it's something I did/didn't do but when I click in the upper left corner to bring up the menu (with Media Apps, Internet Apps, More Apps & Find Files) clicking on any of those doesn't prompt a response, no error is given either. When I type in the top bar something such as Terminal it doesn't do anything (although I can still get to Terminal with ctrl+alt+t).
