Ubuntu :: Broken Links On Every Installation But Link Is Ok When See It In Nautilus
Jun 8, 2011
I reinstalled Linux, in a new Partition, just formatted. Now, when I try to install, or copy, into my /usr/local/"whatever" folders I just see broken links of the files (the little x in the right top of the file, I presume is a broken link). But when I see the file in nautilus, the files seems to be good. But the programs doesn't works. The programs I've been installing are NukeX and UV Layout. The weird thing is that the very first time I installed Linux everything worked smoothly. Since I formatted the partition I've only unistalled Noveau and installed the Nvidia latest drivers of my GPU.

I had F11 which was working OK'ish on my laptop and decided to upgrade to F12 when it was available. This was not too successful and I started getting problem with updates to the extent that I could not install any as I got errors which stopped the updates. Bit the bullet and backed up all the data then wiped the disk and started from a clean downloaded DVD of the full F12. Still getting problems running the updates (output below) and trying to install/run VirtualBox is also failing (also below). The build and source mentioned show as broken links, where do I go next?

I am copying my home folder from my old computer (Ubuntu 9.10) to my new one (Ubuntu 10.04)
I thought that I would make a tar archive of my home directory (~60GB), then copy it across the network and untar it in my new home folder.
The problem is that I have several hard links (30 at most). When I try and untar the tar in my new computer it runs into errors with the hard links.
I think the problem is that it has unzipped the hard link before it's target and detected an error.
One solution is to add --hard-dereference to the tar command , this will create a separate copy of each hard link. but I would really like an exact copy of my home folder on my new computer.
Does anyone have any ideas? Either copying my home directory, or how to make tar handle hard links sensibly?

I could not get my HP printer to work. So in a not so brilliant move, I have uninstalled hplip and hptool and reinstalled it.Even tough the command line message is telling that it is installed, the HPtoolbox would not run (both from the command line or the menu).Did some digging and found that all the HP related files in /usr/bin were all labelled <broken link>.So, I deleted all these. Before I tried to reinstall again, should I worry about all the leftover hplip files?

CentOS 5.2 64bit 2.6.18-92.el5xen. Use rsync with --link-dest for nightly backups, works well. Was recently asked to start weekly backups to an external drive for off-site storage. The regular syncing works but hard linking seems to be ignored. So the backup is long with no space saving advantage. Here is an example of the command being run:
rsync --stats -axzvl --numeric-ids --delete --link-dest=/mnt/DISASTERBACKUPS/austinBackups/backups/2009-08-21 /AUSTINBACKUPS/backups/2009-08-24 /mnt/DISASTERBACKUPS/austinBackups/backups/

I'm running Ubuntu (4.10). Under '/home/.wine/dosdevices' there are several drive assignments (a:, a::, e:, e::, f: f::, etc..) that indicated "link (broken)". If I click on any of these it says to trash them. Somewhat afraid to do without conformation. Or should I just leave them alone?

My recent borked upgrade to -current inspired me to try to come up with a way to sanity-check the lib and bin dirs for broken library symlinks (possibly indicating missing libs) and for binaries and libraries that belong to no installed package, as well as missing dependencies.
This script is the result.
I've checked the script results manually, and it appears to be accurate, so I figured I'd post it here for a second opinion, and/or because others may find it useful too. I'm not aware of another popular method of doing this on Slackware, so here it is:
Code:

For a while now i have been backing up (rsync) to a 1.5TB NTFS formatted USB drive. Now the time has come that i need that backup Looking at the contents of the NTFS drive, all my symbolic links have been converted into a single file which contents starts with the text "IntxLNK". It seems this is some kind of SMB/CIFS/Microsoft link file.
Does anyone know how i can convert these "link files" back into linux symbolic links?

Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit
Background...
I was working with TeamViewer 5 just fine and then saw that TeamViewer 6 was available. I performed a complete removal of TeamViewer 5 via the Synaptic Package Manager and then did a clean install of TeamViewer 6 by executing the new deb file.
TeamViewer 6 was added to the Main Menu just fine, but after rebooting my laptop, the TeamViewer 6 Main Menu launcher was gone and a broken link was there in its place.
I have since followed the solution in the below thread to get a valid TeamViewer 6 launcher back in the Main Menu, but I cannot get rid of the broken link.
[URL]
In the System->Preferences->Main Menu window, the broken link is basically frozen. I can't hide it or delete it. Is there some file I'm just going to have to update to get rid of it?

I have 2 PC's running FC11. The server is sharing a path /raid/shared.windows and the other is mounting that path.
On the server there is a symbolic link /raid/shared.windows/dir that points to /raid/dir
The problem is that this link is broken when the viewed from the mount point on the other PC.
Is it possible that the link is trying to look at /raid/dir on the other PC, rather then on the server?
If so how do I fix it, such that the symbolic link is linked to the right directory on the server?

I have updated using zypper from 11.1 to 11.2. Does this process update the boot/menu.lst file with an entry for the new kernel? Didn't for me.
Any rate, that's not really the problem. I have created a new entry in menu.lst to load the new kernel but I don't have a ramdisk image - all I have is a broken link initrd -> initrd-2.6.31.5-0.1-default
Where do I get the image from?

On step 3, compiling ... module.I get No rule to make target `build' Stop. When I go to the /lib/modules/2.6.18.194.3.1.el5 directory, the Build file link is broken. If i go to the link source /usr/src/kernels/2.6 ...x86_64 does not exist. The /kernels folder is empty.I think I need to reinstall the identified kernel in that directory and reestablish a link to it. but am not savy enough to do that on my own.

openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME. Every time I try to open up the trash, it gives me an "operation not supported" error, and starting nautilus from the terminal doesn't give me any output. I've tried removing the ~/.local/share/Trash and ~/.nautilus folders for both my main user and root and restarting nautilus, all to no avail.
Also, nothing in nautilus that starts with protocol:// works, like network or burn (or trash).
My only lead so far is that I messed up something in the glib runtime, since I've been working on a project that depends on a lot of GNOME and glib libraries, and have compiled a few from source. But since I can't find any sort of log from nautilus, I have no idea what the cause actually is.

At my Uni, we use a web-based login for our internet connections. Its based off of Cisco, and every Wednesday night every computer on campus must re-enter their credentials to use the network.
Normally on my several computers I simply pull up the Terminal, point links to google.com using
Code:
And enter my credentials when Cisco redirects to the login page.
Literally, the process is
Code:
Then ENTER to accept the redirect, down arrow to skip over the logo image, USERNAME, ENTER, PASSWORD, ENTER, ENTER.
Naturally, this is EXTREMELY time consuming, as I have about 5 computers located around campus and must physically walk to the machines and login every single week.
My question is, How would I formulate a program that does the following;
1) checks for connectivity (i.e. is able to reach/resolve to the greater part of the internet) and
2) automatically fills in the credentials on the links login page?

I have a personal wiki of notes, with now thousands of links in markdown format:
[link text](http://example.com)
but now that fckeditor is available for mediawiki (very beta), it has become much better to just stick with wikitext format. There are only a few conversions to do: tables, links, and bulleted lists. The lists are a fairly simple regex and fckeditor magically reformats the tables, so all I'm left with is the links. But I'm not a regex master. How do I reformat code...

I have a new Thinkpad which has a boot partition and a Windows 7 partition. (There's a third partition with recovery software that I'll ignore.) I have installed older Ubuntu releases on several other systems and always prepared the partitions in advance and then done a manual installation. This time I prepared /boot, /, /home, and swap partitions.
When I started the install of Maverick, I the installer suggested that the boot manager be in sda1, which is the Thinkpad boot partition. I stopped and read some forum submissions suggesting that the Ubuntu boot manager should go into the first partition, so I removed my /boot partition and let the installer place the boot manager into sda1. Now the boot menu has two links for Windows 7: sda1, the original boot manager partition, and sda2, the original partition for Windows 7. Both links work, so it appears that everything is okay. I just want to know that this is what is supposed to happen.

I have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. FollowSymLinks is on in httpd.conf
[Code]....
The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. If I make a test file in /mnt and soft link to that, I can see it on the web. So it's just the mount to the vista machine that seems to be a problem. It's supposed to be a simple read-only mount and the apache login should (I think) be able to see the same generic root access permissions.
log from apache: [Mon Apr 26 20:39:42 2010] [error] [client 99.99.99.99] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/user1/pub_html/Music, referer: https://xx.xx.xx/~user1/music.html
The credentials have a login and password that matches a special read-only account on Vista. I can see the files on the system from Linux, but not via the web. As mentioned above, a different link to the same /mnt area works fine via the web. I've tried several different mount options with no success.
