General :: Updates - Continuous Size Bloat?

Mar 28, 2011

I have an EeePC 701 4G running Ubuntu Netbook (10.04). I installed the system on its 4GB SSD for speed reasons - fast SD cards are expensive. I keep all user data on a fairly slow SD card. Problem is, after a few updates, I have less and less free space on the SSD. Since updating replaces old packages with newer ones, shouldn't the size remain more or less the same? I'm almost out of space and will probably have to stop updating the system soon... and yes, I do perform apt-get clean after every update. It helps, but the size is still steadily creeping upwards.

Ubuntu :: How To Remove The Bloat

Dec 17, 2010

I like that everything works out of the box (had to install codecs etc, but thats standard); but I dont like that there are 260 processes running. Is there a utility to stop unnecessary processes from running in Ubuntu 10.10? I used rcconf but there did not seem to be a whole lot of startup processes that were enabled. Yet somehow I am running 260 processes now.

Ubuntu :: Uninstall All The Bloat Without Breaking OS?

May 24, 2011

Is there a way to uninstall all the bloat without breaking ubuntu? It seems like some things (banshee, the calendar, ubuntu one) are integrated with the notifcations and probably other areas too. I think last time I uninstalled them, the calendar was still there in the notifications but clicking a date did nothing, and I'm sure there were other leftover goodies that I didn't take time to find before re-fresh-installing ubuntu. I think ubuntu has a lot of potential as a linux distro, but I'm not interested in their promoted software (i.e. libreoffice)

Another question: when you install an application in windows and then uninstall it, there remain uninstalled changes to your system (leftover icons, links, shortcuts, folders, files, registry entries) like the uninstaller was drunk on the job. Is this fixed in ubuntu or are there remnants of everything you uninstall? Also comments welcome on what you consider both bloat and safe to uninstall.

Fedora Installation :: Find Quickly Updates Size?

So I am prompted in desktop for updates, but no information is given about the size of the packages involved. Sometimes, I don't like to wait too much for the dowload or to update packages which are too large.

Any settings dealing with that, so the individual size and the total per groups (security updates, etc) would be show without going in yum?

Debian :: Aptitude / Size Mismatch / Weekly Updates To Squeeze

Jun 15, 2010

this is at the root of the problems I'm about to describe: Whenever I try to upgrade my Debian installation, I have repeated "size mismatch" errors that necessitate restarting the upgrade process. Since I'm using Debian Squeeze there are lots of upgrades to be done every week. Today, for instance, because I've not upgraded for a few weeks I have to download over 300MB of files to complete the upgrade. However, because of the size mismatch problem this download may well turn into something between 1GB and 2GB, as I repeatedly have to re-download files that were successfully downloaded in the last failed upgrade. What with my ISP limiting me to 7GB per month, I'm finding that merely keeping Debian up to date is using up most of my allotted bandwidth.

I've tried setting the Aptitude preferences not to "remove unused packages automatically", and not to "remove obsolete package files after downloading package lists", but for some reason I still find that files I downloaded in the last failed upgrade have to be downloaded again (and again, ...) whether anyone either knows how to avoid the package size mismatch problem (I can't change my ISP, which has a monopoly on providing internet to my area), or alternatively knows how to set Aptitude not to forget the packages it has downloaded successfully during each failed upgrade, thereby allowing me to avoid such a huge bandwidth usage on my frequent upgrades.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Using Continuous 8.6kb/s Network Download?

Oct 10, 2010

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit (I am an experienced Linux user here), installed a few extras like docky, zeitgeist, added my Ubuntu one account (I don't synchronise much at all, about 100kb max), my twitter account using Gwibber, but nothing much else. I also mount a few smbfs shares in my fstab file at bootup. About the only other program that uses the net that I can think of is running would be rabbitvcs, but I can't imagine that will keep downloading if I am not doing anything.I noticed that when opening system monitor, it is continuously downloading 8.6kb/sec, even if I am doing absolutely nothing. It gets to the point that after an hour or so of use, 100mb or more has downloaded, but what for??

I tried a Googling a few commands to figure out what is eating up network download bandwidth, such as "netstat -p" and "lsof | grep tcp", to try to figure out what is downloading so much at a constant rate, but I can't seem to find the process.I have tried disabling stuff one after the other:

I disconnected my Ubuntu one account

I removed my Twitter account from gwibber

I terminated zeitgeist-daemon

I terminated all desktop-couch related processes

I disconnected all my smbfs drives

But it is still downloading 8.6kb/sec, steadily. This is wasting a lot of bandwidth during the day, and I am not sure what is causing it.

p.s. it is only doing downloading, never uploading.

OpenSUSE :: Continuous Short Term Hanging W/ Multicore + KDE?

Jul 21, 2010

I'm wondering if anyone is having a similar issue to what I'm experiencing. openSuSE 11.2 was very fast on my system. Since installing openSuSE 11.3, I've been experiencing many short term hangs where I'll lose control of the mouse for a few seconds (usually about 2-5) and the system will do nothing. I don't have unusual load during these time periods and I don't really see any spikes during these periods. If I leave a cpu monitor active, I can see a very very light spike one core0 when it happens, but the mouse and keyboard (and seemingly the whole desktop) hang during this spike so I can't see what's causing it, if that's really the culprit.

I am almost suspecting that I'm experiencing an issue with interrupts... since it seems that everything is hanging for a few seconds, then coming back to life. It does seem to happen more often when I'm resizing or minimizing windows... but that's about all I can say as it also seems pretty random. Here's some basic info on my hardware:ASUS M3A78 Pro motherboardAMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core ProcessorGeForce GTX 260G15 Keyboard and MX revolution mouse (just in case USB interrupts turn out to be the issue)So, is anyone else experiencing a similar issue? Maybe we can narrow down what we have in common. Oh, I'm running x86_64.

Software :: Bash Command History Log / How To Write It Continuous?

Apr 14, 2011

I've been looking for how to set this up in bash with no luck so far. I can change what file the history log is written to, and how much history is saved. But it only writes the saved part when bash exits. Instead, I'd like to have bash write that file continuously as each command is entered (and maybe also do an fsync(2) to flush it to disk). That way I can see the command I crashed the box with Anyone know the magical incantation for that?

But there appears to be nothing that I can find there, in the man page, or other searches, that suggest it even can do continuous.

Everything was running beautifully, everything was heavenly, until i encountered "a flash website ". This was strange because ..... worked fine.

Anyway ever since I encountered that site Ubuntu crashes on startup. I log in then crash. Its strange because sometimes it takes a while to crash e.g. when trying to open any application, or sometimes its instant.

1. How i diagnose this problem so it can be fixed, remember it may have to be before the log in.
2. Is there someway I can do a system restore to its original settings or something?

Ubuntu :: What Ever Happened To Use The Largest Amount Of Continuous Free Space

Jan 8, 2011

After a terrible problem I had with x-server, I decided to opt for a clean install. So, naturally I poped in the 10.10 LiveCD (from Canonical), deleted the Ubuntu Partiton (ext4) and swap, and entered the installer. I have a 40gb Vista partition, 90gb media partition, and 20gb unallocated free space. Once I get to allocate drive space in the installation, I get three options - Install alongside other operating systems, erase and use the entire disk, or specify partitions manually. If I click install alongside other operation systems, it tries to take space away from my media partition to install ubuntu. I'm not too advanced with Ubuntu, so I don't think I'm going to specify my own. I don't know how much to give swap etc, etc, etc. What ever happened to use the largest amount of continuous free space? I have 20gb free I would love ubuntu to use.

When KDE starts I get continuous krunner segfaults, krunner is taking 100% of the CPU, the desktop is there but the system is unusable. /var/log/messages is filled with the krunner segfaults, each line further indicating "error 4 in libkio.so.5.6.0". I tried reinstalling kubuntu-desktop, problem remains.

I expect I have created some software incompatibility with my installs, but I do not know how to diagnose/resolve.

I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time.
