May 26, 2011

In .conkyrc i am using

Code:

to show cpu temp but this temp is different from the temp in system monitor indicator which i think is the correct one...so what is the proper code to use in conky to show a proper cpu tem?

Ubuntu :: Conky Only Showing Text Shading?

Apr 24, 2010

I have my conky set up so it displays fortune, then I run a script to add enough spaces so that even if fortune is any amount of lines long, it will take up exactly 17 lines, and after that, it displays the time. The problem I have is that a lot of the time, the fortune will display fine, but the time will only display what default_shade_color is (black).

Code:

# UBUNTU-CONKY
# A comprehensive conky script, configured for use on
# Ubuntu / Debian Gnome, without the need for any external scripts.

[code]....

is there a built-in linux script that does what mine does? and why is conky only drawing the fortune in the right colors? PS the reason I want it all on one conky, is I'm running openbox and the right-click menu only works for stuff drawn to the root screen.

edit: When I don't use the script the colors work just fine, but the spacing's off, obviously. sceenshot-1 shows it.

Ubuntu :: How To Check The CPU Temprature

Jul 29, 2011

Yesterday I have replaced my Athlon64 3000+ with an Athlon64 4000+ on an Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard with 2 GB RAM and a 6600GT.

(I have built my own core-i5 based machine a few weeks ago, just to show that I am not living in the past when it comes to PC hardware ).

In WinXP (dual boot with Ubuntu), the idle core temperature is (on average) 40C (104F) with Q-Fan enabled in the BIOS. (Isn't this a bit high?) With AMD's "Cool'n'Quiet" enabled and "Q-Fan" disabled in the BIOS, the CPU fan makes too much noise (for my taste). With both "Cool'n'Quiet" and "Q-Fan" enabled, the idle core temp is (on avarage) 27C (80.6F). The CPU speed drops to 1 GHz (instead of the 4000+'s 2.4 GHz).

This is all according to the Windows program "CoreTemp", and with the original, stock heatsink. I was struggling with a "Freezer 64 Pro" that came with the 4000+, and just ended up putting the stock cooler back on it (took 10 seconds).

To get to the point: how can I measure the temperature of my "new" (second-hand) CPU in Ubuntu?

Does an OS influence the temperature of a CPU?

I have searched and read about "conky" (which according to Synaptic is installed on my 10.04 system, but I don't see it in the start menu), but it doesn't seem to be/do what I am looking for.

General :: Screen Not Showing On Laptop But Showing On Projector When Connected

Apr 18, 2011

When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.

If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.

I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Preseed - Incorrect CD-ROM

Jun 4, 2010

I'm trying to preseed a 10.04 install, and it's giving me a lot of trouble. I've been using [url] as a guide, but I can't seem to make it work.

I have ripped the x64 alternate install .iso to my hard drive, inserted the preseed files (details on this later) and remastered and burned the iso. When I put the disc into my test PC, it boots up to the CD, checks for English keyboard, enters my custom install option and then fails. It brings up a red screen that says, "Incorrect CD-ROM detected. The CD-ROM drive contains a CD which cannot be used for installation. Please insert a suitable CD to continue with the installation."

The way I've understood the documentation is that there are 2 files that needed edited, and one file that needs created: edit /isolinux/text.cfg, edit /isolinux/isolinux.cfg, and create /preseed.cfg

Here is what I currently have in those files:

Code:

Code:

Code:

The preseed.cfg is 95% copied from the ubuntu documentation, I've only made the changes that are necessary. I'll admit I do not know what most of the boot parameters in the /isolinux/text.cfg file mean.

Ubuntu :: Incorrect - Media Listings

Jul 23, 2010

In my /media directory, there is a sub-directory that doesn't point to any drive (mounted or unmounted) - when I look at it in nautilus, it looks like a folder with an x on it, and I can't actually get inside the folder through the terminal. It has the same name as an external hard drive that I used to own, but has since been repartitioned. I think that, at one point, the drive was removed from my computer without unmounting, and its listing in /media was never removed (I left my home for a weekend and when I got back the drive didn't work and this listing was there in /media. I think my roommate might have done something to it, but he hasn't admitted to anything). Is there any way to remove this listing?

Ubuntu :: GRUB - Incorrect Menu

Jun 3, 2011

I am having weird problem with Grub Menu listing during Grub display at Boot. I Multiboot with Lucid Lynx, openSUSE and Windows7. My Grub is installed along with Ubuntu. I did not install bootloader when installing openSUSE.

Now during boot Grub Menu displays five entries for openSUSE. However when I did grub-update in the terminal it shows only one image for openSUSE in terminal.

Quote:

But again Grub Customizer shows or lists five entries for openSUSE. (Please see the attached screenshot)

There are no problems during boot (except that Ubuntu takes a bit longer to load). I am really annoyed by the multiple SUSE entries in the GRUB and also by the fact that Ubuntu takes a bit longer than normal to boot.
