Ubuntu :: Incorrect - Media Listings
Jul 23, 2010
In my /media directory, there is a sub-directory that doesn't point to any drive (mounted or unmounted) - when I look at it in nautilus, it looks like a folder with an x on it, and I can't actually get inside the folder through the terminal. It has the same name as an external hard drive that I used to own, but has since been repartitioned. I think that, at one point, the drive was removed from my computer without unmounting, and its listing in /media was never removed (I left my home for a weekend and when I got back the drive didn't work and this listing was there in /media. I think my roommate might have done something to it, but he hasn't admitted to anything). Is there any way to remove this listing?

We set up a server with my friend (still newbies ) a couple of months ago using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server edition and agreed to let some folks at school to use it to install drupal on it for teaching and learning purposes. So the idea is that there are multiple users that all install drupal in their home folders separately using SSH and continue from there on etc.
Everything is set up for that to work (domain, settings etc), but there's one thing nagging me, and that's how everyone can look at everything on the server. They dont have rights to modify anything but can look at file listings and view inside files etc.
So how do I restrict the viewing rights of users to inside their home folder, BUT so that they can use the cd command to go to folders inside their home folder, but not outside of it. As far as I know rbash purely keeps you inside home and allows nothing else, so that doesn't work, because you need the cd command.

I recently downloaded some browsers using the synaptic package manager and after taking a look at them I used synaptic to remove them.
However when I ran an update I found that these browsers were still on my sources list and I could not update correctly. So I need to remove them from my sources list.

I have been having an issue getting the menu listings for uninstalled Wine programs to actually get removed from the menu. I can deselect/hide them, but it will not delete them.Anyone else having this problem? How can I get rid of all the icons? It seems that it almost creates one every time I use a Wine to open something.

I did a fresh 64-bit install of 10.04 workstation a few weeks ago, and my grub seems to "double up" the listings of my kernel versions. I have removed the older versions hanging around on my system, but you can see in the list below, that I still get the listings more than once:
jim@jim-laptop:/etc/grub.d$ sudo update-grub

I currently have some windows (Win7 Ultimate 64-bit) shares automounted to my linux laptop whenever I am on my home wireless network. I have this functionality set up using autofs/CIFS and it works well, except for one issue: The directory listings for the mounted windows shares are incomplete, i.e. when listing the directories on the linux machine, it only lists a fraction of what is available in the actual share. One directory returns 28 of 51 files present, for example, and another 33 of 60. NOTE: None of the files on the windows shares are 'hidden' or in any way shared differently than the others.

It only occured to me now, but why is it that date listings are not consistent?
ex:
Code:
They are all Month Day Year but one (from that particular extract, there's more), why is the 3rd there one Month Day Time? I know the year is not 2011 because we have not hit august 2011 yet, but what if it's 2009 or 2008? I would not know.
One of my sites got hacked and I'm just trying to figure out what the hacker got into and trying to figure how he got in so I can fix the exploit.

I've had two hd's in my box forever. for more space and backup reasons. Well I have started running the Debian Squeeze distro since December. I've had many issues, some are still unresolved. but now I'm running into major headaches with the fstab. Specifically dealing with/wondering why UUID's are used instead of the old /dev/hd? I was a little annoyed when I tried Kubuntu to find /dev/sd? used instead of /dev/hd? but that was workable. But the UUID's are a nightmare. Here's my problem.
My main box is finally giving up the ghost. The mobo is dying. So in order to do some tests I took my hd bundle (my two hard drives with their cables) physically out of the box and temp installed them in a test box. I wanted to do some benchmark and other tests. I got all kinds of errors. I found that the system wasn't recognizing the UUID's listed in fstab. My concern is when the new mobo gets here next week I won't simply be able to plug the hd's in like I always have been and just let Linux reconfigure itself (Debian used to be good about this). I really don't want to have to clean reinstall if it's not needed.
So for this I have two questions. WHY developers decided to drop using /dev/hd? or even /dev/sd? ?
And is it possible to revert fstab's listings back to the old /dev/hd? settings. In debian fstab had lines commented out showing how each partition was listed in it's /dev/hd? status during install.
I'm getting really sick of all these archane changes in ALL aspects of linux that don't seem to have any good explaination or need.

I was trying to change the mounting point of a usb external drive from '/media/disk' to '/media/Movies'
Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.

I was wondering if this can be done, or if these features have yet, if ever, to be implemented.

I just bought a new hard drive so that I could convert my XP-only machine into an XP-Ubuntu-Windows 7 triple boot machine.Since the drive is absurdly huge (1 TB) I wouldn't mind throwing ReactOS into the mixtoo.I just found out that master boot records are limited to 4 entries, meaning 4 primary partitions. I had Windows XP set up on my old drive as a boot partition, a program files partition and a media partition. Since I really didn't want to install XP from scratch, I cloned this setup on my new drive.
This leaves me one MBR partition entry for installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and ReactOS. I'd like to avoid having to install XP from scratch like the plague, partly because it's supposed to be a safety net in case things go wrong with my other OS's and because I've invested a lot of time getting it set up exactly the way I like it.Here are the options I've considered and why I don't like them:Install Windows 7 on my media partition. This would work, but I prefer to keep my media partition completely separate from any OS, so that I can reformat an OS partition without affecting my media partition at all.
Use wubi or something to install Ubuntu in the same partition as something else. Again, this is brittle.Move all my media to a logical drive on an extended partition. Create another logical drive on this extended partition for Ubuntu. The problem here is that extended partitions are rather brittle--if you nuke one, it renders the rest useless.Just put the old drive back in my computer and run XP off it. Use the new one for the other OS's. The problem here is that the old drive is slower and uses extra power, generates extra heat, etc.

I'm trying to preseed a 10.04 install, and it's giving me a lot of trouble. I've been using [url] as a guide, but I can't seem to make it work.
I have ripped the x64 alternate install .iso to my hard drive, inserted the preseed files (details on this later) and remastered and burned the iso. When I put the disc into my test PC, it boots up to the CD, checks for English keyboard, enters my custom install option and then fails. It brings up a red screen that says, "Incorrect CD-ROM detected. The CD-ROM drive contains a CD which cannot be used for installation. Please insert a suitable CD to continue with the installation."
The way I've understood the documentation is that there are 2 files that needed edited, and one file that needs created: edit /isolinux/text.cfg, edit /isolinux/isolinux.cfg, and create /preseed.cfg
Here is what I currently have in those files:
Code:
Code:
Code:
The preseed.cfg is 95% copied from the ubuntu documentation, I've only made the changes that are necessary. I'll admit I do not know what most of the boot parameters in the /isolinux/text.cfg file mean.

I just finished my computer build and have installed Ubuntu lucid as my sole OS. Everything seems to be going well except for the fact that when I do "df -h", the size of my 1TB hard drive is reported as being only 908GB. I could understand if it was off by a few gigs but 92? The result is the same with the graphical "Disk Usage Analyzer." However, Under System>Administration>Disk Utility the correct number is displayed.

I am having weird problem with Grub Menu listing during Grub display at Boot. I Multiboot with Lucid Lynx, openSUSE and Windows7. My Grub is installed along with Ubuntu. I did not install bootloader when installing openSUSE.
Now during boot Grub Menu displays five entries for openSUSE. However when I did grub-update in the terminal it shows only one image for openSUSE in terminal.
Quote:
But again Grub Customizer shows or lists five entries for openSUSE. (Please see the attached screenshot)
There are no problems during boot (except that Ubuntu takes a bit longer to load). I am really annoyed by the multiple SUSE entries in the GRUB and also by the fact that Ubuntu takes a bit longer than normal to boot.

I have an NTFS volume on my system which I regularly access from within Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to play the plethora of DVD images (*.iso files) stored there. I use VLC Media Player to watch the content. For some reason, VLC's file browser only shows a small subset of the files by default. I have to select "All Files" instead of "Media Files" to see all the *.iso's.
What's this about? Since they're all the same type of file, I don't understand why some would be viewed as "media files" but others not. If the files were on a Linux-type filesystem (ext3 etc.) I would guess it had something to do with permissions, but I'm not sure how file ownership & permissions apply to a mounted NTFS volume.

Installed and ran it.. thought I was all clear.. however the keyboard keystrokes are all jumbled, and seem to be all over the shop. (i.e.: when I press 'p' it actually comes out as 'X' etc. Happens for all keystrokes. Had a quick look around but haven't found any information on it. Uninstalled tightvnc server and installed vnc4server and it resolved the issue, shrug.

I've been trying to solve this problem for DAYS now, without any progress. I've searched the forums for a long time before even starting this thread. So now I need help, PLEASE. I don't want to have to use WINDOWS in order to sync my phone with my computer, that's crap and there has to be a way. I have Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to sync my LG Versa VX960V07. When I plugged it in to begin with, it was set on Auto-Sync Music, and the phone showed that it was connecting to the computer. I set it on Data-Sync and nothing happened when I plugged it in. I set it to Ask on Plug-in, and again nothing happens, and the box on my phone that says "Sync Data; Sync Music" does not pop up like it does when using windows.
First I tried installing a bunch of different music programs, Songbird, Amarok, K3B, etc and none of them work with my phone. I can't even install the MTP add-on for songbird, it's not supported under linux. Then I tried sudo apt-get install mtp-tools, which worked. Then MTP-detect, which showed no device. I also tried the command for searching for drives attached. And it did not show a USB drive attached. My computer simply does not detect my phone.
Then I tried this:
[URL]
Installing BitPim, which does not support the LG Versa, but the new 1.0.7 testing branch does. So I followed the tutorial on that page, installing Alien and trying to convert the RPM to DEB. I don't even know what these commands mean, I'm not a linux Guru, but I'm learning. I tried everything and spent like 3 hours going through this tutorial to no avail. Is it suppose to create a .deb file where the RPM is? If so it doesn't work, and it won't launch BitPim for me. I have no idea what's going on. When I try:
sudo alien -ic ~/Downloads/bitpim-1.0.7.20090805-0.i386.rpm
I get:
error: incorrect format: unknown tag
dpkg --no-force-overwrite -i bitpim_1.0.7.20090805-1_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 175361 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace bitpim 1.0.7.20090805-1 (using bitpim_1.0.7.20090805-1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement bitpim ...
Setting up bitpim (1.0.7.20090805-1) ...
The "error" I get, I don't know what it means, but either way, this isn't working. I'm getting so frustrated with this and the forums are my last hope before I install Windows again. I really don't want to admit defeat and use windblows.
