Ubuntu Multimedia :: Disable Secondary Monitor Quickly Other Than Loading Up Nvidia-settings And Disabling The Monitor Every Time?

Jun 29, 2010

Currently I have two 1920x1080 screens running in Twinview on my Geforce 275 graphics card. Want I want to do is a quick simple way of disabling my secondary monitor when playing video games or using xbmc to watch movies, etc. I've tried a few applets but they require the xandr function which I think Nvidia doesn't support.

Is there a way to disable this quickly other than loading up nvidia-settings and disabling the monitor everytime. I don't really want to use two seperate x sessions and xinerama due to the fact you can't use compositing.

Red Hat :: Running IPmonitor To Monitor The Disk Usage On Our Servers - Running Df -h

Mar 19, 2010

We are running IPmonitor to monitor the disk usage on our Linux servers. It does not seem to coincide with what is reported when running df -h. For example on a Red Hat 5.3 server - our IPmonitor shows that 85% is used on the /usr partition, however when I do a df -h on the server it shows that 91% is used. Why there would be a discrepancy? IPmonitor uses SNMP.

Ubuntu :: Conky - Hourly Bandwidth Usage?

Jul 10, 2011

So, my mother is out in the deep country and all we can get is Xplornet Satellite internet. They have a fair access policy (FAP) that says they will (and definitely do) throttle your speeds if you download more than 50MB or upload more than 5.5MB in one hour. This restriction resets hourly. As you can imagine, this is fairly limiting, but we have to live with what we have as there are no other options specifically where we live. Right now, I have Conky configured to show the ${totalup wlan0} and ${totaldown wlan0}, but that is per session. In this example, since the computer started, 8.74MB have been downloaded and 1.95MB uploaded. However, this information is somewhat irrelevant as we really only need to know the current usage starting at the top of the hour. Maybe even show the previous hour too.

Fedora :: Hidden Disk Space Usage \ Can't Figure Out Where The Runaway Usage Is?

Dec 10, 2010

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results. For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:

Code:
[root@Zion ~]# df -h

Ubuntu :: Set Custom Resolution For Secondary Monitor?

I just switch from windows to use ubuntu 10.04. I am still learning how to set things in ubuntu.
One of the problem is that I can't set my secondary (external) display to my favorite one. I have 22'' screen (max 1680x1050) but I love to set it to 1280x800.
I follow instruction from this website https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution and my display detail is like this code...

Somehow, I get the new mode in LVDS1 but not in VGA1. How could I add this new mode in VGA1?

Ubuntu Installation :: Retrieving Files From A Secondary Reiser Disk

Oct 19, 2010

I've been running various releases of Suse Linux on my home PC for about 6 years (currently running Suse 11.2). The old hard disk in that machine is starting to experience read errors, so I bought a new disk to put into the PC which otherwise works fine.

So I figure now is a good time to give Ubuntu a try. I plan to install the KDE version of ubuntu on the new drive, but once that's finished I will want to mount the old disk and copy as much as I can off of it onto the new disk (JPEGs, old documents, stuff under my home directory.

The old disk uses Reiser. I have read various threads concerning problems with mounting Reiser FS disks under ubuntu, but many of them are old so it's not clear to me what the current status of support for Reiser in ubuntu is.

I am planning to do the following:

1) Remove the old disk from the PC, put the new disk in its place.

2) Install kubuntu on the new disk.

3) Put the old disk back into the machine along with the new one with the old one being the slave/secondary disk so that when I power up the machine, it will be running ubuntu off of the new disk.

At this point I will want to mount the old disk so I can then start copying files off of it.

What do I need to do to mount the old disk, keeping in mind it uses the Reiser file system?

Ubuntu :: Automounting A Specific Partition On Secondary Drive

May 29, 2010

I'm using rsync and crontab to do automatic backups from my /home partition on /dev/sda to my backup drive /dev/sdb3. The backup partition is ext4.

But the backup partition (sdb3) is obviously on a secondary drive, and I want to automount it when I log in. I read that you have to edit /etc/fstab to do this, but I'm not familiar with the process and can't find clear enough instructions, so I was wondering if someone could give me the command I need and maybe explain how it works?

Ubuntu :: Install /home On Secondary Ext3 Drive

Sep 4, 2010

I'm running lucid.

I want to unmount the current /home from sda7 and mount it to sdb1

I had a look at system -> drives management but just was able to mount the secondary drive sdb1 as "DataDrive"

I had a look at /etc/fstab. This doesn't show the recently mounted sda7 "DataDrive"

So now I'm somewhat lost on how to achieve the goal

>> What ist the correct way to do it?

Scenario 1. Copy all contents of /home to the new drive and then switch the /home mount point

Scenario 2. Switch the mount point of /home from sda7 to sdb1 and cp the contents afterwards

>> How do I unmount /home from sda7 and mount it back to the sdb1 (ext3) when lucid doesn't use fstab (does it?) and I don't know where the drives manager stores it's information.

(Just had the idea that I need to use a live cd for not to lock the system drives (sdaN) )

For sure there is a man page or a how to somewhere i didn't just find >> A link to such information might be sufficient

Ubuntu Installation :: On The Secondary Hard Drive Without Touching Any Of The Data

May 26, 2011

I've read the official documentation regarding hard drives and partitions. My pc has two hard drives. a 160gb primary hard drive with windows 7 a 1.5 tb secondary hard drive with about 80gb of free space I would like to know whether I can install ubuntu on the secondary hard drive, without touching any of the data present on that drive. From my limited understanding of storage, files are written all over hard drives during copy, move etc... Is the ubuntu partition manager smart enough not to overwrite any files during installation? Will I get a warning if there is a risk of any data loss on the secondary hard drive? I cannot backup any of the data on the secondary hard drive due to all my external drives currently being full.

Hardware :: Formatting And Accessing The Secondary Drive

I have a secondary drive on my new RedHat Linux computer and I want to make it permanently accessible from the RedHat system that is now running on the computer.

It is an old Windows NTFS drive that was a secondary drive when this was a Windows machine.

What do I need to do to, and how do I do it:
1) Format it into a format that Linux uses.
2) After it is formatted correctly, permanently mount it so it will always be accessible
3) After it is successfully formatted and mounted, how do I access it? (For example, to add a new ascii text file to it via 'cp')
