Ubuntu :: Recovering Files From Botched 10.04 Update

Jul 9, 2010

So when upgrading to 10.04 there were a few errors and now the machine will not boot up. All I am trying to do now is recover some pictures from the HD so I can to a clean install. I used the Ubuntu 9.04 install disk to gain access to the HD and was able to backup some of the files but other files are locked somehow. When trying to copy them it says that "folder content could not be displayed. You do not have the permission necessary to view the contents." The files in question have orange X's on them.

General :: Recovering/Creating NewWorld Partition On Mac G4 (PPC) After Botched Debian Install?

Apr 25, 2010

I was trying to install Debian 5.04 on a Mac G4, and in typical geek tradition, I didn't RTFM. During installation, I nuked all existing partitions, creating new to my liking. But as I learned later during the installation process, yaboot needed a NewWorld partition, so I can't boot the installation. I don't have any OSX CDs with me (this is a used G4 I purchased of craigslist) with which to create a HFS partition.I've re-run the Debian installer, which lets me create a partition that is supposed to be of type 'NewWorld', but the installer does not seem to like it or recognizes it.

Fedora Installation :: Recovering The Data After The 'update'?

Jul 27, 2009

I started some months ago with Fedora 10, installed (on a barebones hardware package) from a DVD I got with a magazine. I liked it, and it worked fine. When 'Update Available' messages arrived, I installed the updates. When Fedora 11 arrived the same way, I installed that, a few weeks ago, and it, too, was working fine. A few days ago another 'Update Available' message arrived, and I installed it, unfortunately without backing up first. There was a message then that said to restart computer (which was still working fine).

I restarted the computer, and it would go as far as the moving blue bar across the bottom, then stop with a blinking cursor on a black screen. After trying several things, including the recovery part of the original DVD, I put a different, clean drive in the computer and reinstalled Fedora 10 from the original DVD. What I was hoping is that I could then install the original drive as a secondary one and get access to the files on it.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Files From Formatted HDD

Jan 24, 2010

While trying to create a bootable SD to install Ubuntu on a netbook, I accidentally formatted a part of a removable HDD that was connected to my computer. If I remember correctly, the partition I formatted wasn't the main partition of the HDD. In that case, does it make sense that the whole disk was wiped out? On that HDD there's a year worth of work, I really need that back.

I was using PhotoRec with some luck: it started to recover files, but with no names, which is almost useless, considering a lot of it are recordings - useless without their names. Is there any good recovery program that will recover all my files incl. names? Is there a easier oprtion, considering that I think I didn't really format the big partition of the HDD? What may it have been, the small partition?

Ubuntu :: Recovering Broken Files?

Feb 3, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a 100 GB partition of my 120 GB hard disk. I left the other 20 GB as free space. I moved my data (about 20 GB) to my home folder. Everything was fine for two days. Then I installed a few packages with the help of Update Manager.he installation, I was asked to reboot. Upon reboot, I was always taken to the Memtest86+. It was as if GRUB wasn't detecting my ubuntu installation. Then I installed Ubuntu again by taking up 20 GB of the existing 100GB partition. I am currently using this installation. When I try to access the older installation (the 80 GB one), I find that all my data in my home folder is broken. (screenshot attached - homefolderbroken.png). homefolderbroken.jpgWhen I see the properties of the 80GB partition, I can find my data is still present (screenshot attached - data.png

Ubuntu :: Recovering Files From External HD?

Aug 24, 2010

My powerbook died (motherboard or something...). I took out the Hard Drive to mount in an external enclosure. I tried accessing the drive in both windows and mac - no luck. So, I thought I'd try it in Ubuntu, thinking maybe it would show up - no luck. My question: is there any way to access the files from my drive using linux? Is there any way to mount it? The drive is spinning, and when I enter sudo fdisk -l ; I get this:

Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

[Code]....

This: Disk /dev/sdb: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes is the drive I want to get my files off of. So ubuntu is reading the drive in some fashion.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Deleted Files Of A Specific Name?

Mar 21, 2010

I need to get back two avi movie files but I've deleted hundreds and any recovery might try and drop them back on my small hard disk and overwhelm it! I know the files include the word 'Archer' but I'm using Formost, which is very easy to use, but it doesn't seem to allow for the searching of specific files by name. I can recover by type ie, avi, jpeg, pdf.....

Are there any recovery programs that will list files in a table so I can pick the ones I want to recover or do a search in Terminal for my 'Archer' files?

Ubuntu :: Recovering Files Using Live CD - Do Not Have Permission?

Aug 11, 2010

So my old computer died. I was Dual-Booting Jaunty and Windows XP. Now I'm trying to recover my files from the hard drive, but of course, you can't do it from Windows 7. I could recover everything from the Windows Partition, but Windows doesn't even see the Ubuntu Partition.

So I popped in a Lucid Lynx live CD to recover my files, only to find out that several seemingly random folders within the Documents folder have a cross on them. When trying to access them I get a message saying I "Do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents."

What should I do now? I really need to recover those files!

Ubuntu :: Recovering Files From Dead Mac Using Live?

I have a Macbook that I need to recover files off of. Problem is that the screen is bad, and I have no way of booting the thing up to access the filesystem. So now I have the hdd plugged into a PC and have booted the ubuntu live cd. I can access the drive, but my pictures, music, and library folders have a red x marked over them indicating I do not have permission to view their contents. I have been trying to change the permissions to no avail. For some reason I cannot navigate to the directory through the terminal to change the permission. Instead, when I go to cd /media/Macintosh HD is throws a No such file or directory error.

The Macs hdd is already mounted, because I can access its file structure. I need to know how to get into the Macintosh HD through the terminal so I can give read/write permissions to the music and pictures folders.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Files From Cancelled Format On Windows Drive With LiveUSB?

Apr 13, 2010

I've been scouring the internet and these forums for answers and have yet to figure anything out. Here's the situation: My boss's computer (HP running Vista) decided it didn't want to boot anymore. (Error: Cannot find Bootlog.xxx) My boss used a recovery disk to attemp a 'repair' but unintentionally began a format cancelling it at 1-3%. I created a LiveUSB that I can boot off of, and Ubuntu recognizes 52gb of Data on the drive. However when I go to view the drive nothing is there. I am assuming that the 'page file' was deleted although the rest of the information wasn't.

My question is: Is there anyway to access this data although the information telling the computer what is there and where it is has gone AWOL?I'm trying to get the payroll information off of the computer so she can finish her taxes, I will be working on this all night. If anyone wants to provide real time help my AIM screen name is 'Fryphax'.

General :: Recovering Files On External Disk Caught In OS Installation

May 10, 2011

I was installing Ubuntu to the internal disk in my main machine, with all external drives unplugged for safety - then discovered I had accidentally chosen the external drive and it wasn't unplugged. (Seeing three drives not two listed as installation targets should have tipped me off, but I guess my IQ was low that day.)The external drive, in compliance with Murphy's Law, was my backup drive with all vital current files. The last few months of work gone. Now the drive shows only the stuff I normally expect in / on any Linux machine. It mounts showing as ext4, but the disk was (I'm 98.5% sure) originally ext3.However, the installation did not finish.Whatever files got copied, clobbered only a fraction of the disk. df reports only 1% of the space used.Maybe the bulk of my valuable files are okay, and could be recovered with some tool?

There are other questions on this site about file recovery, but many are for Microsoft Windows, or for malfunctioning disks, or some other situation. I'm on Linux with a physically healthy external disk. I'm fairly sure that the more recent and more important files are in multiple copies on that disk, so if one copy is clobbered there's hope to get the second copy.

Ubuntu :: No Display After Botched BURG Install?

Nov 24, 2010

and I did a silly noobish thing. I have been using Ubuntu in various flavors for a little over a year now, and decided to install it alongside my Win7 Install on my desktop. Last week I read about BURG on omgubuntu.co.ukI am fairly certain I botched the install of burg somehowWhenever I turn on the computer, there is no display, not Mobo splash screen, not post, no GRUB menu nothing. the Display light is orange, indicating no input detected. But I know the OS is loading, I can hear it bootup, I can login, just by pressing enter, then typing my password, then enter again. Once I hear the login screen drum beat, if I turn off the monitor, then turn it on again, I get a super low res display. the driver works, compiz effects work, but everything is at 640 x 480. when I go to system-> preferences-> monitor the display is labeled as unknown and I can't change the resolution.I can access the BIOS, but the screen still does not detect the input, even if I power cycle the monitor after access the BIOS, so I won't try to change any settings, as I can't see what I am doing. The only reason I know I am in the Bios is that I can press f10 and then y to cause it to reset to default settings and cause a reboot. My system:ATi Radeon hd5870AMD Phenom II X4 3.4 GHzWD Velociraptor 300 Gb4 GbRamASUS M4A78-E

Ubuntu Installation :: Recoverring From A Botched Kernel Upgrade?

Feb 26, 2010

I admit, my knowledge of LINUX isn't that great. That said, I thought I'd be able to pull off a basic upgrade (clean install of a whole new kernel, not patching the existing one) from the latest 2.6.31 in the ubuntu repo (I think it's 2.6.31-19.54 to be exact) to 2.6.33 (kernel --latest-stable) from source. I got all the config done, compiled it, and updated GRUB, rebooted to find that it had a "2.6.33.old" entry in the menu (not particularly relevant, I admit) even though I only ran the "make install" command once. Anyway, when I selected the non-old entry, it churned for a moment, gave a couple of weird screens for <1 sec each, and then gave me an error about a missing graphics module (I'll look for how to automate loading modules on my own, and see if I can port the existing NVIDIA module from my working kernel to the newer one) and gave me a list of options like "boot into graphics safe-mode" "boot to login shell", etc. and the mouse wouldn't work, so I had to use the keyboard to work the screen (i chose the shell login, since I didn't feel like seeing ubuntu's butchered face while it's in "graphics safe-mode"). I managed to get the computer to boot into the stock kernel, and am now wondering the following:

1). Do any of you guys out there think it's worth trying to save this kernel update?

2). How do I go about removing the "2.6.33.old" kernel & entry? (i've tried synaptec, the "make remove" and "make auto-remove" commands with no success.)
