Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot After Botched Upgrade?

Jun 6, 2010

my left mouse button on my Acer laptop stopped working out of nowhere. While searching for a solution I started the upgrade process. Without thinking I restarted during the upgrade installation, which has apparently caused some big problems.I cannot boot any longer. I get the Ubuntu splash, then a slowly flashing black screen.I am able to boot to the Live Cd without any problems, but I'm not sure what to do from there.I'm been searching the forums, but can't find anything.

Ubuntu Installation :: Recoverring From A Botched Kernel Upgrade?

Feb 26, 2010

I admit, my knowledge of LINUX isn't that great. That said, I thought I'd be able to pull off a basic upgrade (clean install of a whole new kernel, not patching the existing one) from the latest 2.6.31 in the ubuntu repo (I think it's 2.6.31-19.54 to be exact) to 2.6.33 (kernel --latest-stable) from source. I got all the config done, compiled it, and updated GRUB, rebooted to find that it had a "2.6.33.old" entry in the menu (not particularly relevant, I admit) even though I only ran the "make install" command once. Anyway, when I selected the non-old entry, it churned for a moment, gave a couple of weird screens for <1 sec each, and then gave me an error about a missing graphics module (I'll look for how to automate loading modules on my own, and see if I can port the existing NVIDIA module from my working kernel to the newer one) and gave me a list of options like "boot into graphics safe-mode" "boot to login shell", etc. and the mouse wouldn't work, so I had to use the keyboard to work the screen (i chose the shell login, since I didn't feel like seeing ubuntu's butchered face while it's in "graphics safe-mode"). I managed to get the computer to boot into the stock kernel, and am now wondering the following:

1). Do any of you guys out there think it's worth trying to save this kernel update?

2). How do I go about removing the "2.6.33.old" kernel & entry? (i've tried synaptec, the "make remove" and "make auto-remove" commands with no success.)

Can reach 10.10 -boot from prior Linux - but mouse and internet are gone. Everything else seems to work and I can get to System and terminal with keyboard shortcuts, but need to reinstall mouse (Logitech M110) and internet. Can't find an Xorg.conf file or a /dev/input/event3.

Ubuntu Installation :: "No Setup Signature Found" Error And Lilo Won't Boot - Botched

Jun 18, 2010

I was using 2.6.28-14 kernel version, it update me to 2.6.28-15. Now I have upgraded kernels many times, not first timer, but this is a first to me. So I have this wierd system setup, don't ask. Where I use lilo instead of grub, just take it as it comes guys, I have to. At any rate, it upgraded all fine, and I restarted, play the blues I got a "No setup signature found" error and lilo won't boot. So I did some searching on web and everyone says to boot up CD and re-install lilo. Well with grub I've done this many times, no prob bob, but lilo won't work.

So I used my super auto grub CD to try to re-do things. Since grub config and grub was still installed on my Linux partition I tried it right. No go of course, grub says it can't find the partition nor can it mount it. So I tried the beta of lilo on the grub cd and it don't work either. Botched it up worse, first it wouldn't do anything on my second drive, just sat there black screen. Then I did it a second time, let's screw it up some more right. Now it doesn't even find a boot loader in the MBR ha ha.

So at any rate, how in the sam heck do I fix this thing? Short of downloading 10.04 and re-installing everything?? Don't want to do this, too much work when I can just upgrade and keep my stuff installed and setup. So I tried running jaunty from CD and re-loading lilo. So everything is working fine right, I mounted drive and apt-get install lilo and ran lilo. So lilo even telling it what config file to use and where won't find things and won't re-install. So just for grins, even though I thought it wouldn't work I mounted my second drive linux partition, the one with the boot info on it, you ready, to root "/". Then I couldn't unmount

I used the Ubuntu 9.04 install disk to gain access to the HD and was able to backup some of the files but other files are locked somehow. When trying to copy them it says that "folder content could not be displayed. You do not have the permission necessary to view the contents." The files in question have orange X's on them.

Ubuntu :: No Display After Botched BURG Install?

Nov 24, 2010

and I did a silly noobish thing. I have been using Ubuntu in various flavors for a little over a year now, and decided to install it alongside my Win7 Install on my desktop. Last week I read about BURG on omgubuntu.co.ukI am fairly certain I botched the install of burg somehowWhenever I turn on the computer, there is no display, not Mobo splash screen, not post, no GRUB menu nothing. the Display light is orange, indicating no input detected. But I know the OS is loading, I can hear it bootup, I can login, just by pressing enter, then typing my password, then enter again. Once I hear the login screen drum beat, if I turn off the monitor, then turn it on again, I get a super low res display. the driver works, compiz effects work, but everything is at 640 x 480. when I go to system-> preferences-> monitor the display is labeled as unknown and I can't change the resolution.I can access the BIOS, but the screen still does not detect the input, even if I power cycle the monitor after access the BIOS, so I won't try to change any settings, as I can't see what I am doing. The only reason I know I am in the Bios is that I can press f10 and then y to cause it to reset to default settings and cause a reboot. My system:ATi Radeon hd5870AMD Phenom II X4 3.4 GHzWD Velociraptor 300 Gb4 GbRamASUS M4A78-E

Also, I uninstalled and re-installed the driver for my ethernet with no change. On Ubuntu, when I try to do "ifconfig eth0 up" and "dhclient eth0" I get the message "No DHCPOFFERS received. Ubuntu Installation :: Boot After Upgrade To 9.10?

Feb 18, 2010

I was happy with my Jaunty on my Asus X53 with ati radeon hd2600 and restricted driver, until two hours ago. I've started (after a long wait) to upgrade my Jaunty, everything was fine after upgrade, but I've noticed video was running with "ubuntu driver" and 3d wasn't available, so I started to install a fresh release of ati driver. But before I've saw in /usr/share/ati the previous copy of my restricted driver so before install the fresh copy I've run "sh ./fglrx-uninstall.sh" it had remove all telling me there wasn't any istance of fglrx (of course I thought...) ...and so before start with new installation I've thought about a reboot for first, but after it I'm unable to boot...

from normal boot it simply hang after a while, I think when it try to initialize video card. but more worse, also after choice recovery option at grub loader it hang after a bit, without give me any prompt.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Into 10.04 After Upgrade

Apr 30, 2010

I made a mistake while upgrading the GRUB options - when choosing "install the maintainer's version vs. keep the local version"...in the drop down menu, I chose the local version option. On reboot, GRUB works, but I can't boot into 10.04. My old entries (kernels) are still there, but when I choose them, there's an error that says something like "disk not found". However, I am able to boot into Vista.

So do I solve this problem by fixing GRUB? If so, how? I have a Live CD of 9.10, would that be necessary to use it to solve this problem?

refer to [URL], under GRUB.menulst: maintainer's version vs. keep the local version. I read it afterwards (I should've read it before)

Ubuntu Installation :: Won't Boot After Upgrade 9.10 -> 10.04?

Oct 3, 2010

I installed Ubuntu like 3 days ago with a cd I got when I bought a magazine about Ubuntu. That cd contained Ubuntu 9.10. After a couple of hours I desided to instal 9.10. After using 9.10 for 1 day and installing some programs like java and flash player, I checked for updates and desided to update to 10.04. The installation seemed to go all smooth, but after I clicked on the 'reboot now' button, my laptop couldn't boot no more. A little purple screen with "Ubuntu" written on it popped up for like 5 seconds and then it dissapeared, and there I had a nice black screen. I waited 4 hours, but still nothing. Yesterday I installed 9.10 again, and now I still want to update to 10.04 or 10.10. But I can't seem to use a Usb flash drive with my Toshiba laptop, and I only have 1 cd left. My rabbit kinda destroyed the 10.04 cd and now I only have 1 cd left. Shall I burn 10.10 on a cd and check if that one will work properly, or is my laptop just to old and slow ( Centrino 1.6ghz, 512mb ram ) to run one of those versions? I'm really new to ubuntu and my English sucks as well, because I come from Holland.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot After 10.10 Upgrade

Oct 18, 2010

I initially installed 10.04 using the Ubuntu Windows Installer and everything was running fine. When I would boot up the computer it would first hit the Windows Boot Loader and give me the option of booting Windows 7 or Ubuntu. When I chose Ubuntu GRUB (I believe) would then load asking if I wanted to load Ubuntu or Windows 7. This was fine as it would work and that's all I cared about. Now after running the 10.10 upgrade from within Ubuntu (not from a CD) when I select Ubuntu from the Windows Boot Loader it acts as though Ubuntu is going to load, the screen goes black and then the computer reboots itself. I would prefer to fix the problem, if possible, instead of doing a fresh install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Won't Boot After Upgrade To 10.10

Jan 6, 2011

Desire to try ubuntu at work but also not to break my work machine so i opted for the windows installer desktop edition.

10.04 64bit AMD version installed, after getting flash installed everything was great, very impressed.

Something telling me there was a newer version, so i went to the updater, ran it, it found 10.10, i proceeded, got to the clean up step, said something about x# of files not needed, clicked remove, ask me to reboot. I reboot and it gets to the OS choices screen, i choose ubuntu and i see no messages, it just flicks me back to the bios.

I can't seem to find this problem documented anywhere. Is it best to just re-install or can it be fixed?

Secondly, is the windows installer version decent enough? Are there many disadvantages? I'm just a bit wary of trying the conventional method in case i mess up the partitions/MBR or windows which would be disastrous on my work machine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot - XP / 10.04 Upgrade?

Apr 30, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 as an upgrade from 9.10 on a dual-boot (2 separate disks) machine and it decimated my Win bootloader. I did fix and here's my solution:

1/ Run Win XP installation disk
2/ Type R for Repair
3/ Choose XP installation
4/ Run FIXMBR and FIXBOOT

Note when I ran FIXMBR only, it did not fix my problem. But running both FIXMBR and FIXBOOT did solve the problem. I offer for information only, as your situation may require a different solution.

Anyway, i've upgraded to 10.04 - and already loving it. However... my XP o/s no longer boots. It use to prior to the upgrade. Now, when the XP o/s is selected from GRUB2, I just get a series of bleeps and a flashing _.

Now, I am a complete novice. I actually have no idea where to even begin trouble shooting GRUB2 (and i'm assuming its a problem with GRUB).
